"Marriage" as a legal concept involves numerous protections for both parties, including the right of divorce. The laws are already in place nationwide using that language - it makes a hell of a lot more sense to accept that it applies to everyone than it does to rewrite all the books to say "civil union."

According to the Associated Press, Iran has announced, via state television, the release of 4 Iranian-American prisoners. The semi-official Fars News Agency reports that Jason Rezaian, a reporter for the Washington Post, is among them.

https://twitter.com/euamiri/status/688365299545051140?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

In addition to Rezaian, Fars reports, Amir Hekmat, Saeed Abedini, and a fourth American-Iranian have been released.

“Based on an approval of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) and the general interests of the Islamic Republic, four Iranian prisoners with dual-nationality were freed today within the framework of a prisoner swap deal,” the Tehran prosecutor said in a statement.

https://twitter.com/brianstelter/status/688371854361374720?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

As part of the deal, according Fars, the United States will free six Iranian-Americans being held for charges related to sanctions placed on Iran.

Those sanctions are due to be lifted today, once the United Nations nuclear agency declares that Iran has complied with agreements—part of the deal brokered between Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif last year—to scale back its nuclear program.

Have we talked about Bayghazi? Gawker had a nice write-up on it:

quote:

Even the slain ambassador, Chris Stevens, is given pretty short shrift. He comes to Benghazi with a pretty face and high ideals—a “true believer.” He gives the annex a corny pep talk about bringing Democratic values to Libya, while a warrior nods off in the background. He’s a victim and we mourn his passing, sure, but he just doesn’t get it. As proof of his vanity, his consular residence contains a framed picture of himself being interviewed on TV. We see it shortly before he is killed.

..

There’s a lot that’s bizarre about the framing of the main events in 13 Hours, but the portrayal of Stevens is possibly the strangest part. The ambassador is, in conservative Benghazi narratives, the foremost martyr, a man to be honored and remembered, betrayed by the administration. If what is honorable about the contractors is their willingness to lay down life for country, you might think Stevens deserves similar recognition: not so, in Bay’s estimation.

When the warriors start to falter toward the end of the movie, their injuries and deaths are shown in excruciating, agonizing detail. Limbs are severed, and splintered bones poke out of dying men. Warriors collapse in pools of blood. This is Bay’s crude way of emphasizing the magnitude of their sacrifices. Stevens dies offscreen and reappears in a memorial reel in the closing credits.

http://gawker.com/i-watched-michael-bays-benghazi-movie-at-cowboys-stadiu-1753238965

The writer interviews a bunch of people, and many of them are :argh: at Hillary, presumably for murdering failing to help Amb. Stevens. And yet, it seems that one of the most important and sympathetic figures in the right-wing universe for the past 3 years, barely had any screen time whatsoever. Wonder if the conservative moviegoers are bothered about that.

edit: Also, apparently there's zero mention of either Obama or Killary throughout the entire movie. Somewhat surprising.

Isn't one of the 4 prisoners being released the American pastor that the right wing evangelical conservatives been clamoring about to be released? The one that they complained about because we made the deal and he was still prisoner?

If so, I wonder what their response will be. Probably ignore Obama's administration involvement completely or to complain about how he should have been released a log time ago.

It's not even that complicated. Iran has wanted the removal of international economic sanctions against them. The Obama administration, instead of calling them the "Axis of Evil" and refusing to talk, traded the lifting of sanctions for an inspections regime and return of hostages. This is either diplomacy working as it should or an intolerable capitulation of American power, depending on your point of view.

Re: medical work weeks:

I noticed that there appears to be a wide difference in the criteria american MD use to select their specialization compared to old socialist Netherlands. Too me, it looks like the salary prospects are more important in the USA. For instance, its relatively easy to get into pediatrics and neonatology in the USA because the pay is bad. Whereas in the Netherlands pediatrics is one of the most competitive field to get in to because everyone wants to cure sick kids, even though they pay is relatively bad as well. Dermatology is a similar story, its not a flashy specialty so its easy to get into in Europe eventhough they make great money with reasonable hours. In boston getting into Dermatology was seen as one of the highest achievable goals considering the money you would be making.

My speculation is that this in too a great extend due to college debts: American friends that just got their MD (At harvard at least) routinely have 200.000 dollar debts. I finished my MD with only 15.000 euro debt and that is without having any side job and no financial support from others.

Who was the guy earlier in thus thread who was handwaving away wallstreet/financial immorality as "bad business decisions" and couching everything in term of vaguely abstracted economics terms?

Cause that kinda person is the problem that the American left has to ~really~ contend with: someone smart enough to craft a clever, exclusive, technocratic discourse and couch everything on her/his terms within this discourse.

This is one of the faults of Marxism, IMO. It engages wealthy capitalists and neo-liberals on the terms they want, in the language they dominate, in a way where only t hey have the keys to A)understanding the problems and B) fixing them.

If any inequity, violence, or predatory practice is simply, "Oh we had bad models" or "We made mistakes and poor business decisions" aparati of power and nexuses of power don't get challenged. Instead, they are couched in the ever more milqtoast and amoral terms of business and economics. "Oh we didn't mean to pile Grade A dog poo poo into mortgage backed securities, or hawk preditor loand to the most vulnerable in American soceity; just ~business ~ you see."

Bullshit, they knew what they were doing would hurt people. That they either blinded themselves to that reality or just refused to analyze the actual human toll their decisions would make. Neither of those options removes their culpability in my eyes.

Bay's an action film hack and a piece of poo poo person, but I was still expecting this to be a movie about Stevens (and Vilerat) being left high and dry while Obama took a nap or something. This write up really does support the notion that this was some generic action film that had Benghazi tacked on to it.
