In other words, he represents Old Labour, that is, the Labour Party back when they were a real social democratic party before the 80s and Thatcher and the 90s and Blair, who loudly trumpeted New Labour which was basically the same thing that happened everywhere else in the western world at the time: the nominally left-wing party formally accepted neoliberal economics, just in a slightly less brutal form, and made a dramatic shift to the centre and the right, leading to the kind of "both parties are more or less the same economically but with social differences" critique that also exists in the US and elsewhere.

Recently, a populist insurgent campaign by a massive number of Labour supporters elected Jeremy Corbyn, an Old Labourite who has never given in and never renounced social democracy and never accepted Blair's New Labour shift, to be the leader of the party, which has caused massive infighting between the New Labour establishment and Corbyn's Old Labour supporters.

Besides that, the British media is extremely, extremely right-wing with very few noteworthy exceptions like the Guardian. New Labour is too left wing for them the same way centrist Democrats are too left wing for the Tea Party. So the possibility of an actual honest-to-god Old Labour socialist like Jeremy Corbyn having any kind of power has sent them into a frothing mania of hatred and bile. And even the notionally left-wing papers are still much more New Labour than Old Labour and still want Corbyn out, either because of ideological differences or because they think he could never win the next general election (which is still years away). Since the image we get in this thread is the newspaper image rather than the "still popular among Labour members who elected him in the first place" image, the politoons thread sees a very very negative impression of Corbyn as an old commie who is unelectable but would ruin everything if he ever did somehow get some power.

Every "controversy" so far surrounding the guy has been an incredibly far-reach. He doesn't clean himself up because he's told to and he treats minor incidents like minor incidents rather than obey what the media says are Big Deals. Seriously, the guys biggest political scandals wouldn't even register as issues to a freeper if Obama committed them.

e: so if you match the cartoonists to the papers, you'll see that the Guardian, and sometimes the Independent and Times cartoonists are very much to the left of their paper's editorial line.

Someone asked earlier why the UK toons are generally so much better than US ones, and whether there's a big sea of poo poo ones that aren't being posted. Bear in mind how much more restricted our newspaper scene is compared to the US and you'll appreciate that what you're seeing is basically all the mainstream newspaper cartoons in Britain for any given day - of the big papers, only 4 or 5 have regular political cartoonists, and smaller regional papers are dying and probably have better things to spend their money on. And as has been pointed out here and in the last thread, they're guilty of all the same fallacies US cartoonists are (except Rowson, who's just impenetrable instead) just with prettier art.
