Like my buddy who is playing it for the first time excitedly telling me he figured out he could throw a lizardman at another lizardman and then slice their tails off. Oh yeah, "D&D campaign" is exactly how I'd describe this game. Some of the bigger quests wouldn't be out of place on a tabletop. It's probably why I love it so much. It's weird. There's substantially less in this game's overworld than, say, Skyrim, but I like exploring it more. I think part of it is because it takes so long to get anywhere that every trip outside Gran Soren feels like a proper adventure.

Crossed half the world from Gran Soren to the Greatwall Encampment, having to fight my way through Ogres and Cyclopes (who my crazy Mage friend made short work of, at least), because I had a quest objective over there from this Fourvel Trial quest... only to find out that the objective was just an NPC I had already talked to back in Gran Soren. ![]() At least I dropped a Portcrystal so it wasn't a completely worthless journey

Reflections on 20 Hours In: -The character creator is, itself, one of the game bosses -I have a sneaking suspicion that the game's quests are actually one of the ways the antagonist is trying to kill the Arisen; seeing as one of them had me go into a dungeon only to come on a tentacle monster which couldn't be killed, and the other against obscenely tough bandits, I'm just content loving around -I should have rolled a healer pawn -What the gently caress was I thinking -Whoever put the amulet on the underside of the golem's foot is a loving dick -More accurate title would have been Goblin Bully (or Wolf Worrier) 2016 -I loving love ballistas regardless, 10/10 GOTY

It takes a bit of luck and a bit of skill, but the ideal situation for me is triggering the golem shutdown while it's knocked down, thus letting me freely rampage on the foot medal. Takes a bit of doing and having the shiniest medallion be easily accessible, though.

![]() I managed to make a pretty decent looking little girl Arisen without making a weird loli, I think. Boy there are a lot of those. Also the correct order for a Golem is to kill the back disc first, kill the foot disc, then kill the head disc to freeze it in place once it stands back up.

I really like how the golems have a typical anime laser beam. You know, light beam across the ground, pause, EXPLOSIONS. They feel distinctly anime in such a western styled game. Something I'd never noticed in the poor resolution of consoles is that they have holes where their faces should be. Creepy.

Speaking of golems, the metal golem can just go gently caress itself. Jesus christ would you just leave me alone for five drat seconds while I shoot this thing. If I hadn't gotten a good new bow just before that fight it'd have been even more of a pain in the rear end.

Yes, I know it gives a lot of blue numbers, but that poo poo's ugly and way too overused. If I find one while wandering the wilds I'll find the nearest cliff to toss em off. Edit: The male equivalent is the Nameless Armor, Julien's stuff. Yes, I know it looks cool, but drat that poo poo's not creative at all and gently caress you random pawn you confused me in the mission where you trail the guy.

The princess dress has a ridiculous 50% piercing, 60% striking resistance when dragonforged or better and up to 85% stagger and knockdown resistance when gold rarefied which makes it one of the best pieces of mage armor in the game. stack some defensive augments on top of that and you can basically ignore a lot of damage. It's nice for a fighter or warrior too since you can combine it with stone/steel will or temerity for even more ridiculous damage resistance. It's kinda not a wonder it's so commonly used.

hampig posted:It might, but I have no idea why it does. Dark Souls is at its heart a horror game, Dragon's Dogma is a more classic action RPG. It's combat is superficially similar but reminds me much more of Kingdoms of Amalur (or maybe that's the other way round). I mean that only as a compliment, for all that games' flaws it also had a fun as hell, deeper-than-it-first-appears combat system. Dragon's Dogma has enemy placement and combat that encourages thinking on your feet and making poo poo up as you go, Dark Souls is all about learning where the enemies are and how the levels are laid out. They're not just a bit different, they're fundamentally different games. I get the same KoA feeling from the combat too. The reaction to encountering a new enemy is not to circle around it and fish for backstabs but to see if you can launch it into the air, flatten it with a giant anime weapon or blow its socks off with spell. It's neat but also a breath of fresh air. I want to customise multiple pawns without relying on shenanigans! I restarted to make a strider pawn because it turns out big burly muscle wizard is a pretty popular choice. You'll be missed, McBhastard. ![]()

Absolutely have to agree with this. Most everything is so prototypical, that if you were to take most things in isolation they might not seem so impressive, but it all comes together in this big badass audio/visual/gameplay spectacular. It gets you to sink in immediately by presenting you with little more than the familiar. Then it gives you a good while to truck along, doing all the badass fantasy stuff in a way that looks sufficiently badass. How feasible is it to, say, change vocations every five levels just so you can grab your augments of choice before settling on a final class? I want to run a sword/bow Assassin, but all its augments are too situational while Fighter, Warrior, and Strider all have the good poo poo. Also, how plentiful are Discipline points overall? While playing the above classes, will I get enough points to have some rudimentary skills so I won't be stuck piddling around with basic poo poo while trying to level them up?
