I just finished Hunter-x-Hunter the other day and I'm surprised how much I enjoyed it. It was my first very long series, and also my first straight-shonen. Can anyone recommend another longish series that I might have overlooked for being too mainstream? I gave Fairy Tail the 1-episode treatment and was not very impressed.

Gintama if you're not wholly committed to the battle action side of shonen (though there is still quite a bit of action). It's a comedy series with lots of 4th wall jokes poking fun at other anime (like when they recreate the ending to Evangelion frame-by-frame) and also themselves (like when they put the protagonist in sleep paralysis as an excuse to not animate a scene). There are 300+ episodes, but it's mostly episodic, so you can easily just take a bit in at a time. It does take a while to get really going since the first 30-ish episodes aren't too great. You can skip the first two episodes too. It's eh in media res anime filler.

HxH is the best long form "mainstream" shounen out there. Some people recommend Yu Yu Hakushou but I couldn't get into it. Help Im Alive posted:I would say that's one of the ones everyone knows Ghost in the Shell, seconding the other Hosoda movies (Summer Wars, especially Wolf Children), Evangelion Rebuild 1.11 and 2.22 (and you might as well watch 3.33 at that point) If you've watched the Madoka series, watch Rebellion.

I gave Fairy Tail the 1-episode treatment and was not very impressed. yuyu hakusho naturally. it's not as fully realized as hxh and some of it can feel like a trial run for things that are better executed in hxh but it's worth a watch if you haven't. fist of the north star and jojo's otherwise. dragonball if you haven't watched it for some reason. ranma 1/2 is neat but you don't need to watch all of it because after all the characters are introduced it mostly just recycles. yakitate!! japan takes shonen fighting tropes and transposes them to baking bread. its only 69 episodes though. but yeah if you're interested in these types of shows you're better off just reading the manga than slogging through their 100+ episode adaptations especially in the days of 12/13/14 episode cours. they're timesinks and good if you're unemployed or whatever

If you want specifically anime, the Saint Seiya anime is just about the only one of the long form shonen whose anime adaptation was better than the source material, if only because it made everything more interesting to look at. The manga gets really, really wordy for fighting manga while the anime is really well directed and paced, and amazingly vibrant and psychedelic at times. It's not as serious or dramatic as HxH ever gets but it's one of the best straight fighting shonen anime there is.

So I'm watching ruroni kenshin for the first time. I think it just showed up on Netflix. I remember adv put out samurai X anime back in the day and wondering if they were related? They look like they both had kenshin in them.

At one point during the height of SailorMoon/DBZ popularity someone was planning on localising the Rouroni Kenshin TV series for US networks as Samurai X, it ended up not happening but for some reason ADV stuck with it for the movie/OAV releases, just in case I guess.

Yeah, specifically there were the two OVAs and one movie released as Samurai X. The OVAs are "Trust & Betrayal" and "Reflection". You do not want to miss Trust & Betrayal, it's by far the best Kenshin thing that's been made.

It wasn't as nice as a Hosoda film but it was one of the better not-Ghibli Ghibli movies I've seen in years. Mostly because actual Ghibli has kind of been garbage for a while.

Kaguya? Yeah that one was alright I suppose if only for the visuals, but then you get like a 12 year gap between it and Spirited Away (a movie that I at least don't care for, anyway). I guess The Cat Returns is kind of interesting since it kind of has a connection to Whisper of the Heart. But the rest? Give me Patema Inverted over any of them, easy.

How was When Marnie Was There anyway, compared to other Ghibli films? It's still not had a cinema or Blu Ray release in the UK yet (hurry up, Studio Canal!) so I haven't had the chance to see it.

I wouldn't call them terrible but I am decidedly not a fan of either Ponyo or Howl's Moving Castle at least. Haven't gotten around to Wind Rises yet but most Ghilbi fans didn't seem to like it all that much, I thought?

It seems we are getting into "not as good as = bad" which is not really fair. There are better and less good ghibli films, and ones i enjoy and ones that arent for me, but id be hard pressed to call any *bad*

I love Howl's Moving Castle (probably my favorite Miyazaki I've seen), but Ponyo was boring and I really didn't get The Wind Rises. It felt meandering and ultimately kind of pointless. I also liked Arietty, even if it wasn't as great as other Ghibli stuff.
