I recently popped into a random "Distress Signal" in supercruise and ended up fighting like 20 pirates before an Imperial search & rescue ship jumped in to save the busted up ship that sent the signal, and it would be cool as hell if that'd been part of a rescue mission worth like 10,000,000 CR.

The way I see it, Elite is a great game for finding stuff to do- so long as you don't expect to get any reward out of it. There's all kind of exploration and lore and interesting interactions to be found, but the pay structure is screwed up beyond belief.

Luckily it's a pretty flat game as far as the income progression. Once you hit a certain point there's no real treadmill to eternally run on for maintenance. That's why I'm just grinding my way to several hundred million- from there I can more or less afford to finance any kind of activity and stop worrying about how much it pays. As long as I don't sell ships back too often, I should stay ahead of the curve.

Yeah distress signal chains are pretty interesting up till like 3 anacondas pop in with an escort of FASs. Something like that designed for a group of people would be pretty cool.

Are assassination missions worth doing? Every time I look at them the wording is such that it feels like I'd get a bounty for just doing them. "Services no longer required". Feels like I'm serving someone their pink slip on the burning wreck of the ship they were flying.

You'll make better money by bounty hunting. I only bother with missions when I'm helping with background simulation boosts, rep grinding to get some ship, or when there's a new flavor-of-the-month moneymaking scheme (Sothis, pirate hunt stacking, etc).

They ever going to fix the missions? I keep ragequitting the game because I'll just log in and have literally nothing to do because RES's seem to be devoid of any targets and the missions are all:

* If by some miracle these NPC's spawn, fly by their FSD wake 30 times because they're treated as contacts and not destinations by the game for no reason.

I would suck a space dick for a "kill some pirates" mission. I haven't seen a single one for over a month and I check the BBS every time I dock.

Bounty hunting is definitely the way to go.

I've been hanging out in Gende hunting in the hazardous zone there and making bank.
Just finished a round in the RES and made a little over 3 million credits in about 45 minutes.

Being rank 4 with ALD helps a lot.

I get them pretty frequently as federation rank-up missions. In fact, I had like four in a row because you can keep accepting rank up missions from different stations until you actually turn one in.

How does the clipper fare under the new hull tanking regime when it is space murder time? Compared to the FAS or whatever I mean. It never could shield tank that well

Generally speaking, bi-weave for pve and regular or prismatic for pvp. There are exceptions, but that is the general path.

The clipper has fallen largely out of favor because of it's poor hard point placement, other than that, it's much faster and less maneuverable than the FAS. It shield tanks only a little better than the FAS.

Maybe in PVP, but that's just fine for PVE.

e: I wish I could try a FAS before grinding the rank and selling my Clipper, because I would be interested in being more behind targets than the Clipper can offer, and throwing on PACs and poo poo for full advantage, but alas

I'd imagine that grinding the rank would only take an hour or two at Tun (since you only need to be rank 5 for the FAS) and you can always wait till you have the cash for the hull in addition to your Clipper and just strip the modules off the Clipper and buy stuff for the FAS. You won't lose any money due to module rebuy being 100% and the FAS base hull is only 16.8m at a Yong-mart so it shouldn't break the bank too badly.

UAs make stations not work. If it got "full UAd" the station shuts down except for starports, if its only slightly UAd, random tabs will disappear (reportedly Robigo still has a BB).

This can get reversed apparently if the station gets metalloys sold to it, but the thresholds for that and the count of UAs needed to create either station state aren't clear.

They're at strong signal sources in certain systems. You sell them on the black market at a station, but be careful because it damages your ship's modules every like minute or so.

If you accidentally shoot a space cop in an RES how do you clear the bounty? Just kinda hold up in a different system for a period of time or suicide?

This includes the canopy. I was having no big issues with the corrosive effect of a single UA, but I got greedy and carried two and it was a frightening experience. My canopy was taking a lot of damage from them and was below 50% when I was about 10 minutes away from where I was going. I kept expecting it to break any second.

I would do it all over again because it was nerve wracking and loads of fun.

If you just shot him, and didn't kill him, it should be a 7 minute (or 8?) bounty. After the time has elapsed, it will change from the time left to 'On H-Jump' or something. Make a jump to/from another system, and it will now be a fine, which you can pay in the local station.

When this happens to me, I usually jump to another system to repair/rearm, go grab a drink or something, then undock and jump back since the timer should be expired.

Cthulu Carl
Apr 16, 2006

Jump away - you can even just go into super cruise - and check the bounty in your transactions tab on the left. It should have a timer letting you know how long it's valid. Then just chill in another system till the timer expires.

Or say gently caress you bounty and ice that pig for getting in your line of fire then peace out.

I found an outpost in the system, docked, turned in the 250k of bounties I had, then logged out for the night. Good to know.

I've had it clear to a fine without jumping by logging for the night also, so check it when you log back in, and if it's not in your transactions as a bounty anymore, then it cleared and will be a fine listed in your contacts.

I know stations and planets follow orbital paths, but are they realistic? For example, does the moon take roughly 27 days to completely orbit the earth, and does Earth take roughly a year to orbit the sun?

Yes. Certain things seem to be simplified/not modeled (Roche limits, for example), but orbital and rotational periods do seem to be modeled (mostly) correctly. The Earth and moon both have accurate orbital and rotational periods. In some cases you can actually clearly see stuff orbiting around its parent body, as with Mitterand Hollow in Epsilon Indi, which is a moon you can land on but have to park in front of and let it run into you because it's orbiting so fast you can't actually catch up to it in supercruise. That particular example seems unlikely to be realistic, but it's still pretty neat to drive around on a moon that whips around it's parent every 90 seconds or so.
