"The speech is good in a kind of harmless way" How goddamn patronizing can you get. Typifies the parochial attitude dominant in here.

I'm asking you to expand on your views. Some introspection would go a long way if you're going to criticise people for being 'philosophically bankrupt'. What did you get out of the speech, what do you think others should get out of the speech?

open24hours posted:'Uhh, maybe you are the one who is wrong: a treatise' You are a braindead political junkie who has become so jaded that you equate a heart breaking and socially important story about a sudanese immigrant with emotional quotes shared to facebook. That you don't see this as a problem is why you are a junkie and not a thinker. Earnestly proposing that it's more imporant to make sarcastic jokes about racist pieces of poo poo rather than the actual message of the speech is demonstrative of how twisted and self serving your political mission has become. The cynicism which permeates this thread has likely become a part of your narcissistic self image, makes you feel like a real thinker. This covers up your obvious cognitive shortcomings, which are typified by posts like "Uh, could you please explain to me in detail what you mean when you say you disagree? I'm trying to wrap my head around this." Basically, people like you are incredibly frustrating to talk to because your completely static mindset is a part of what makes the political machine such a lumbering giant.

Stay inspired There's nothing wrong with the speech. It's not critical but people don't want a critique of their government on Australia day, they want to be reminded of the good things about their country and ignore its faults. That's fine, it's the same thing in other countries on their national day. I don't know what you're so upset about. open24hours fucked around with this message at 02:37 on Jan 22, 2016 |

Someone giving a speech like that on Australia day is a perfectly normal and acceptable thing to do, I'm not criticising him for anything. I would imagine he has much more nuanced views but didn't think that was the time or the place to air them. I know it's easy to attack a strawman, but I'm not sure it's worthwhile.

If only Deng Thiak Adut had spent time in the AusPol thread. I thought it was a good speech, it does highlight that a lot of people who are "refugees" or "boat people" actually have suffered through a lot and we should therefore be more inclusive and sensitive to the plight of those less fortunate. However, I'm worried that this person will be painted as "a good refugee" or something, as opposed to "drat boat people" so yeah
