It was an amazing speech, and I was so glad to have been able to watch it live on ABC whilst doing some research at home.

Such an astonishing amount of courage and fortitude within his words, truly an inspirational person who has survived extreme conditions.

In the midst of my ranting, I should point out that the thing that does drag me back to this smelly church every time is that often there are truly interesting and good perspectives that I hadn't thought of before.

Obviously. Do you really need to ask this? I know you're open24hours, the most plodding thinker in the thread, but i still get confused when you ask for such banal clarifications.

I'm asking you to expand on your views. Some introspection would go a long way if you're going to criticise people for being 'philosophically bankrupt'. What did you get out of the speech, what do you think others should get out of the speech?

If anyone needs a period of introspection, it's the guy calling Deng Thiak Adut's speech "good, and kind of harmless."

You are a braindead political junkie who has become so jaded that you equate a heart breaking and socially important story about a sudanese immigrant with emotional quotes shared to facebook.

That you don't see this as a problem is why you are a junkie and not a thinker. Earnestly proposing that it's more imporant to make sarcastic jokes about racist pieces of poo poo rather than the actual message of the speech is demonstrative of how twisted and self serving your political mission has become. The cynicism which permeates this thread has likely become a part of your narcissistic self image, makes you feel like a real thinker. This covers up your obvious cognitive shortcomings, which are typified by posts like "Uh, could you please explain to me in detail what you mean when you say you disagree? I'm trying to wrap my head around this."

Basically, people like you are incredibly frustrating to talk to because your completely static mindset is a part of what makes the political machine such a lumbering giant.

There's nothing wrong with the speech. It's not critical but people don't want a critique of their government on Australia day, they want to be reminded of the good things about their country and ignore its faults. That's fine, it's the same thing in other countries on their national day. I don't know what you're so upset about.

Try turning on your monitor and reading it again

quote:

In responding to tragedies in which the lives of victims and perpetrators alike have been snuffed out to serve some demagogue, we must all be careful not to let local opportunists exploit our emotions with simplistic solutions.

What seems new for we Australians is that the physical barriers to terror such as distance and sea are now irrelevant. But this is just the shortness of memory. These barriers became irrelevant for the traditional owners of this land when the winds and the currents brought the ships of the First Fleet up this Harbour.

...

Then as now freedom from fear is something that must be fought for. It can never be taken for granted. Fighting must sometimes be physical and our War Memorials are testament to those who fought and gave their all. But the first line of defence against consuming fear is always our collective hearts and minds.

Open24hours, slouching sidways in his posting throne to give Deng Thiak Adut a bit of sage advice: Nice platitudes kid. Maybe you should read up on what a real critique looks like though? There's a lot more stuff about poo touching.

Someone giving a speech like that on Australia day is a perfectly normal and acceptable thing to do, I'm not criticising him for anything. I would imagine he has much more nuanced views but didn't think that was the time or the place to air them. I know it's easy to attack a strawman, but I'm not sure it's worthwhile.

Absolutely, gut bustingly hilarious. If only Deng Thiak Adut had spent time in the AusPol thread. He may have not only made a much more insightful speech, he also would have been able to make loving hilarious references to poo, and we could have all had a laugh during the best Australia Day speech ever.

Matter of fact, I'm salty now.
I thought it was a good speech, it does highlight that a lot of people who are "refugees" or "boat people" actually have suffered through a lot and we should therefore be more inclusive and sensitive to the plight of those less fortunate.

However, I'm worried that this person will be painted as "a good refugee" or something, as opposed to "drat boat people" so yeah
