If a mage casts an enchantment spell like Ice Boon, does that only wipe over elemental effects? For example, if a strider has a set of daggers with fire and a poison bow, the daggers will now inflict ice but does the bow inflict just ice or also poison?

edit: I'm debating the usefulness of mages at this stage regardless. The healing spells are nice but I've got enough cash to load up on loads of curatives and flasks now.

Okay, so I'm in postgame Bitter Black Isle in (what I believe to be) endgame gear and I can't even hurt this fire drake. I'm a mystic knight and actually managed to buff up fully and lay down 3 grand cannons.

No damage. I was hitting the heart, but again, no loving damage. This is the third time I've encountered crap like this happening and really only could get past it by popping four periapts until I got a better weapon. Am I somehow doing something grievously wrong? Since I'm going from being able to take entire life bars from Daimon if I'm left alone at all, to 0 damage. I can handle encountering poo poo that I deal significantly less damage to, but it's incredibly frustrating to run into something you simply do null damage to.

edit: I'm frustrated as hell as you can tell.

double edit: Said weapon I'm using is a silver forged ascalon and a gold forged purged bulwark.

Buffs overwrite the magic damage and element native to a weapon, so if it already does elemental damage it'll only do the new element while buffed, and if the mage is too weak the damage amount may be lower as well. (non-elemental based) Debilitations on weapons are an entirely separate thing and are there whether the weapon is buffed or not.

Firedrakes have the highest non-ur-dragon defense in the game, and ascalon isn't all that strong compared to BBI weapons. If you want enchanted stuff, there's a sword you can find in level 2 weapon drops, and the level 3 one does straight up twice the damage of ascalon. You need better gear.

You probably just don't have enough base strength/magic to pierce its defenses. This is where min/maxing comes in handy, or stacking Periaps. There's a reason Fournival sells an infinite amount at an astoundingly cheap price.

On the one hand, I'm glad they didn't make the solo fights incredibly hard so you'd burn through whatever healing items you had on hand for false difficulty.

On the other hand, the current setup has no sense of tension and makes all your enemies look pathetic and inept. My favorite was the ring thief sorcerer that teleported off a cliff as soon as he was done talking.

Unrelated note, is it possible to kill Feste before you're arrested? I got thrown in the dungeon just for picking him up. I originally planned to throw him off the castle walls.

Thanks. Now I've found a bunch of different weapons that do different things I'm trying to wrap my head around how it all works.

I'm sticking with Strider for the most part for both the Arisen and the main pawn so I'm assuming with their average stat growth that's a decent fit for elemental weapons.

Baaaasically...
the Duke was supposed to be this badass who slew the last Dragon, but he didn't, he just took the dragons bargain. Arisens are immortal until the dragon is slain, so what you see is time catching up to him when you do that. He's mostly angry cause you've shown him how much of a lovely coward turd he is.

The everfall going nuts is a bit more hazy, I think by killing the dragon you kinda screw the world over until you start the cycle anew, which is what the whole wakestone everfall thing is about.

As Grigori informed you, the Duke didn't actually kill him; he made a bargain, sacrificing his own beloved, his pawn Lenore, thus becoming the duke of Gransys. When you killed Grigori he released his hold on all the hearts he had taken: yours, the Duke's, and the Dragonforged's. The Duke and the Dragonforged immediately aged to their proper ages, the Duke becoming an old man the Dragonforged becoming dust.

Killing Grigori also caused the Everfall to open up, taking a good chunk of Gran Soren along with it. Perhaps if you explore it you'll find out the reason.

Outside of cheatengine it's entirely possible to rocket through levels once you know what you're doing. Periapts and Blast Arrows outright destroy things. It's not even optimal but I was using my normal route (obvious endgame BBI spoilers) to clear Daimon for huge exp in under five minutes from around level 100. It's doable earlier than that, too.

Also, if he got in on early Ur farming, that was tons of easy experience.

The duke was a previous arisen, but took the dragon's bargain to give up his beloved in exchange for power. I think when your heart is taken you no longer age. So when you actually defeated the dragon and had your heart restored it did the same for every failed arisen and instantly aged them. So the Dragonforged guy was ancient and immediately disintegrated while the Duke was just a few decades older than he looked. The everfall is a nexus between worlds. There are multiple worlds each with a player character in it, when your pawn is rented in literally travels to a new world through the everfall.

Do the new quest and things get weird.

The Duke was Arisen like you, and the dragon gave him the same choice you got, but he decided to kill his wife instead of fighting. The Duke is very old, but he doesn't look it because the dragon's magic was keeping him youthful; when you kill the dragon you dispell that magic and he reverts back to his true age. (This is also why the Dragonforged, who's super old, turns to dust.) Killing the dragon also opened up that big rear end hole, which is some kind of weird dimensional nexus that serves as your post-game superdungeon. If you go back through that door under the pawn guild, you'll find an NPC with a quest that'll lead you to the true ending.

Already explained are some of the more obvious points, so I'll elaborate a bit on something more subtle with them in mind.

-The Duke never got over taking the Dragon's bargain, and Aelinore looking so much like the one he sacrificed was a focus for his madness. On the one hand it was like he had Lenore back. On the other a remainder of his cowardice.
-If you did the Arousing Suspicion quest the Duke calls Aelinore "Lenore". He isn't just slurring his speech, he's actually calling her Lenore. It's also a wonder why he would apparently be trying to kill her if he reminds him of his lost love, but speculation is he was frightened that if "Lenore" was still alive the Dragon's bargain would be null and would soon come for him.
-Pawns would be able to identify him and somehow know he took the Dragon's bargain; he is still Arisen. Hence why they are not allowed into the Castle.
-The Duke naturally doesn't want you to face the Dragon. He's pretty caught on his own failing to face his fear, so the whole Wyrm Hunt, and later quests are either meant as distraction, or to hopefully get you killed so that HIS bargain would remain in tact.
-The above point becomes more obvious with the quest immediately preceding Deny Salvation. You are being tasked to go on a long journey where you are escorted to the treasury to be given provisions. You're not being prepared for a trip of great importance. You're basically being bribed to leave Gransys and forget about the Dragon. Just before you're to be sent off, word arrives regarding the cult Salvation, and I guess the Duke is concerned they may actually be able to provoke the Dragon or something.

Some of this is speculation, but I appreciate it wasn't all in your face. If nothing else, it leaves the door open for the speculation. One thing the frustrates me more than anything are talking heads, so it's pretty nice when story telling is being done through quest design, rather than text.

Keep going. There's still some more jRPG plot. It fits nice in the category of short-but-sweet, so while it kinda goes off the rails it doesn't go on the tangent for so long that it gets tired. Strangely, it feels right at home.

i think lenore might have also been his pawn considering both sofiah and the dragonforged both still had selene and the fool with them but the duke's pawn is never seen or mentioned which would also add onto the "no pawns allowed" law. plus dark arisen showed that pawns could fall in love with an arisen.

Yeah, that's perfectly reasonable. I'm not sure I would go that far because I'm not sure how that point itself is relevant thematically, but there is no reason to think otherwise, and some good reasons for thinking that is the case. The precedent for pawns remaining with their arisen is established with no less three than three Arisen the Seneschel also still has his pawn.

The secret is to either bring a ton of spring water (which is easy to get, just drop a portcrystal at a spring and bring as many empty flasks as you can afford/carry) or just have portcrystals at the escort locations and teleport there. I think all of them are either places where you have missions anyway, or are just good/useful places for one anyway.
