For some reason people think that private companies won't intentionally harm people because doing so would hurt profits.

The problem is that is only relevant if the people harmed belong to a demographic that has social value (wealthy white people) and the resources to hold the business accountable and create public awareness.

One of the biggest companies in the world knowingly sold HIV contaminated hemophilia medicine to countries with less regulation after a bunch of people were infected in Canada and the US and it basically hasn't hurt them at all.

Too many people assume the most profitable action will also be moral but the reality is if the cost of wrongful death lawsuits is less than the profit to be gained, a company will knowingly sell a product with like a 25% mortality rate in trials and try to obfuscate that fact for as long as possible. There are multiple real world examples of it.

Government agencies are far from perfect but I'd trust them with my safety well above anyone with a profit motive.

The moment I hear someone in a company mention their "fiduciary duty to stockholders" I pretty much assume they're a completely soulless, amoral monster that would slit their own parents' throats to make their stock price go up a point.

I hate shareholder value theory with a passion. It's a wretched and harmful idea and I hope whoever originally spread it around lived a miserable life. Human beings have a duty to each other to try to make the world a better place both for each other and our progeny, not to be godforsaken money generating robots.

There are other details like how women have equal rights as passed down from the gods. Gary Butterfield mentioned that one of the subverts your expectations by inverting cliches in interesting ways like how men are considered to be emotional, wild, and undependable, whereas women are level-headed and cunning.

This has some historical parallel in the Iroquois* Confederation, where technically the boys were in charge of politics and war, but they generally weren't allowed to own property and were appointed and impeachable by the scary family grandmas. Because men are prone to hysteria and stupid decisions, and while they need to feel important and beat their chests, they can't really be trusted with important decisions or economically vital holdings.

I'm pretty sure that's not enough to send anyone to university, or enough to make a difference in them weighing up how much they want to go versus how much debt they'll end up with. So it's entirely about getting attention, with any money that comes through the doors being incidental.

$2500 is probably a summer class or a portion of technical school. If you're an in-state student at Indiana University it's about 25% of your tuition. It helps but the person is going to need a other funding to make it since they have room/board and books to buy.

Anyone actually check those sources?

Some places don't do that but if you're ever away from your area when the manager rolls around there is no sufficient excuse. "I had to use the bathroom" should technically do it but you'll hear about it. "I swung by your department looking for you and you weren't there. Writing you up."

Yeah I've gotten grief for all sorts of stupid poo poo at some of the jobs I've had. That job in particular was awful because 5 different managers would give you 15 different things to do when you only had time to do 10 of them. Then you'd get pulled out of your area by a sixth manager, kept all day, and never allowed to do your regular work, which you would then get in trouble for not doing.

After the economy shat itself a lot of jobs, especially menial unskilled ones, started treating people like absolute garbage because they knew they could get away with it. That job in particular as soon as the economy tanked started driving out all the experienced people who actually got paid non-terrible money, jacked up the price of benefits, and replaced them with a skeleton crew of teenagers making minimum wage for part time work.

But, you know, JOB CREATORS!!!!!

I'm so thankful that I've worked most of my career in the non-profit world. One of the few jobs I've had in the private sector was a family-owned hellhole of a company where family members were all in key positions regardless of competency. Employee responsibilities would get shifted around us non-family members based on how angry the boss was at certain people that day. I ended up having to do accounts receivable work where I'd call the people that owed us money to get them to pay. After running a few reports on who owed us what, there were a few companies at the top of the list owing collectively close to half a million dollars for work performed over several years. I wasn't allowed to call them. Their owners were friends with our owner from high school. Then, one day I come in to work and find out our owner had been at the bar the night before with one of those guys. They had a fight. I was now to call his company to get him to pay up. Some days the trucks would be late returning to the warehouse, so they'd be behind on their nightly routine of cleaning up. Each driver would wash their truck. When they were all done with the trucks, then we could lock up and leave. Once, when they had been particularly late, I noticed that each driver would wash their truck alone, while the others stood around because there was only one hose. I suggested to the boss and his wife that all the drivers could each handle one job of washing (soap bucket, vacuuming, hose, etc.) for one truck at a time and they could get done faster that way. They told me that was socialism. I laughed, they didn't. Then I realized they were totally serious. I didn't even know what to say at that point.

And that poo poo isn't even a tenth of the dumb poo poo that happened there. Within seven months of starting, in the middle of getting screamed at for something I had literally no control over, I said "This is my two weeks," and walked away. The response was basically "You can't quit because you're fired!"

But, remember, the private sector is always better!

Thank God I'm back in the non-profit world again.

You're not entirely wrong about that. I was told that each truck is assigned to a driver and they're supposed to paint a little nose art style painting on the door so they can take ownership of the truck and take care of it. Apparently washing it alone and making all the office staff stay at the warehouse until 7pm is part of ownership.

It's been a few years since that job. I'm still glad to work where I do now. We do good work in the community and I have great coworkers.

This is some BFC Retail poo poo, but I worked at a grocery store for 5 years and there was some dumb poo poo all of the time. Unfortunately I'm not terribly quick on my feet when it comes to jaw dropping stupidity, but the real highlight involved mesh gloves to prevent accidents with knives. Makes sense, right? If you're dealing with knives, have some sort of base safety to reduce the number of accidents that can go really bad really quick. I worked in the deli dept for the last year and they handed out these gloves to everyone to use, I had the insane idea of reading the packaging insert that read DO NOT USE WITH SERRATED OR ROTATING BLADES. Most delis have both rotating (deli slicers) and serrated (bread knives) blades. The idiot store assistant manager was like "don't you want at least some protection bro!?" while the harpy that was in accounting yelled at me about our biannual bonuses. The woman in accounting caught me off guard because all employees outside of managers had their bonuses tied to corporate profits, not individual store performance.

I probably should have called up OSHA on them and thrown the idiot manager under the biggest bus I could find, but I shortly thereafter secured a computer janitor gig and peaced the gently caress out.

I don't understand these people viewpoints at times. Rowe is often times very intellectually dishonest in his arguments and has a :smug: attitude often times. Which is quite odd for someone who champions him to be a blue collar type of guy.

Though in Bernie’s defense, how can liberals indoctrinate the youth of America if they aren’t being sheltered from opposing viewpoints on college campuses?
Think about what a brilliant ploy this is for Bernie.
Receive votes from non-tax-paying students by promising them free college.
Send everyone to college for free where leftists are indoctrinating them for a lifetime to come.
Profit.
Think “indoctrinating” is a strong word? Well, I think “segregated cultural safe spaces” “trigger warnings” and “mandatory cultural sensitivity training” are all strong words, so there’s that.
But Mike Rowe is making a bigger point that resonates with many Americans but is oft ignored by the media on both the left and the right; that there are plenty of intelligent, capable, contributing Americans who are simply not cut out for academia. Why look down your noses at employers, entrepreneurs, and innovators simply because you have an expensive piece of paper indicating a learning experience achieved less expensively on Google?
Then let me ask you, (yes, using two extreme examples to make a point here) who is more valuable to a country?
Someone who doesn’t go to college, learns a trade, advances in the workplace, pays taxes and eventually employs other Americans?
Or the lifelong student living on student loans and eventually, if they’re lucky enough to become a professor, government grants?
Also, of the two, who’s the one actually paying for “free college?”

Learn more about the current indoctrination at Academia below.

Yes, those are two extremes and you're using a strawman as an example for your college student. The majority of people I knew that went to college did so because they wanted to be:

-in business
-a chemist
-a nurse
-a physical therapist
-teacher

All of these are very practical, normal jobs. Why is Mike Rowe arguing against poor/minorities not trying to do those things? I realize his intent is not to be racist, but raging against the idea of "free college" and pointing everyone towards trade schools kind of implies it.
