Jesus! Jesus Christ! Say his name! Jesus! Jesus! Come down now!

I think people didn't react well to the bait-and-switch element - A Silent Hill exploring wartime PTSD is a pretty neat idea but why bother with that when there are big twists to drop?

I played Dead Space 3 recently and it's only really a horror game in the sense that characters die in pretty bad ways (as a straight action game, it was more of the same as DS2 but not as good - weapon crafting didn't add much). That said, the first quarter or so of the game is all about flying around in Zero G and exploring derelict spacecraft, and I really loved that - when Alien is your favorite movie, you become a sucker for haunted house spaceships. Maybe I should give System Shock 2 another run-through. I'd love something more current though. (Before you say anything, yeah I've played through Alien Isolation about twice and I'm salty that we'll never get a sequel).

Apart from just being a glitchy as gently caress game, the writing was pretty nonsensical and all over the place. Not to mention the combat and movement were a little too swift, and the characters too lucid, to capture the actual survival horror feeling. I feel a Silent Hill game is defined by its surreal, dreamlike atmosphere, where you stumble through increasingly hosed up environments solving obtuse puzzles, with clumsy combat punctuated with baffling cutscenes where the characters sort of talk past each other and don't properly address what's going on. Homecoming was too forward with its imagery, and characters too lucid and acknowledging of the otherworld and the events around them. Also, the cult plot point is widely considered one of the weaker aspects of the original series; Homecoming goes full-bore with it to the point of having totally ordinary human beings as enemies later on.

SH4 and 0 are the only post-3 games that I feel actually capture some part of the original magic. 4 has some pretty spooky enemies and scare rooms evocative of SH3 (the hospital world is pretty good), and manages to keep that uncomfortable atmosphere while also tying up a few loose plot points. 0, while extremely bland, has a couple environments and scenes reminiscent of 2.

Silent Hill 4 was legitimately terrifying in spite of (and occasionally because of) some really bad design decisions. Spatial wrongness and claustrophobic environments are two of my hot buttons for horror, so that game probably had a better track record for scaring me shitless than any other I played.

Downpour was the only one of the western SH's I thought was any good - it wasn't scary, at all, but at least tried to have some original ideas beyond aping the previous games or whatever the gently caress Sam Barlow thinks is clever.

Selenephos

I didn't find Silent Hill 4 scary but it is probably the weirdest and most surreal game in the series. The game feels as if it operates on dream logic and the environments, even though they can be quite brightly lit, just feels off and dreamlike.

It's got a lot of bad design decisions and the entire second half of the game is a repeat of the first half but with an escort mission tacked on, but that too kind of adds to the nightmareish surreal nature of it all.

There was also a Buffy game on PS2 that was surprisingly well received by both fans and critics.

Eh, it might run fine on console but it had some pretty glaring issues on PC. Namely there was a section where you had to shoot out lights with a cannon and said lights would just not appear on NVIDIA cards (like any NVIDIA cards which is super bad), which kinda blocked progression in the game unless you were great at guessing or downloaded a mod that just let you bypass that section. There was also the ending escape sequence which was shy of impossible due to them lowering the character's movement speed; so yet again you were either hosed at the ending, or you have to tweak game files to revert the character to the console running speed. It's not a great PC port but it's understandable as to why considering their dev team was super small and immediately closed after the game was released.

I really disliked the aesthetics - there was a shift from the offputting weirdness of 1-4 to a kind of more pedestrian horror vibe. It stole all the good visuals and ideas from the other games and the movie. I don't remember it being a particularly good game, either.

It seemed kind of like a cheap, tacky imitation imo.

While I've gotten more jaded and used to poo poo over time (complete reflex action bitch to jumpscares I even see coming aside), I'll always grant SS2 the fact it made me afraid of a certain early game enemies far more than any of the "scary" ones it had. It's definitely worth a look, and relatively cheap on GOG and STEAM these days so no big loss if you just drop it. It's still got plenty of cool atmosphere even if audio log voice acting can be "Video Game Voice Acting".

Totally play on Normal or Easy though, because part of the difficulty increase is raising the costs of upgrades. And there is a bit where to progress you need to research some poo poo. They do give you some free cyber cookies to do so, but it's based on Normal costs. There are some tricks around it if I recall but you don't really need to add the extra hurdles to a first time playthrough.

PS, love your wrench.
PS part 2. Decide on a hoarder pile location. Most use the elevator, but I hedged my bets against glitches by having a collection scattered around the entire area by the first upgrade station, which isn't that far from the elevator anyways.

ScouSin

Yeah my first playthrough on System Shock 2 was on Hard, and while it was still fun, it is way easier to completely flub your game up if you spec poorly; and the higher upgrade costs mean you'll experience much less of what the game has to offer. Even for seasoned FPS veterans I can safely say you'll have more fun on Normal than on Hard, guaranteed.

I remember there being a lot of issues with both saving and stability though those might have either been patched out or fixed with a fan patch. The PC version is not great in many ways, which is too bad because it's a cool game.

It was definitely the coolest setpiece of Homecoming, but there were also only a grand total of around 3 enemies there and very little in the way of puzzles, diffusing the tension somewhat. The boss also sucked, even if the concept and music was good.

To be fair, I don't think I got the true ending, and I don't think getting the true ending depends on what difficulty level you play on. The "without taking any risks" bit is probably in direct reference to the fact that, in the game, you are explicitly told not to go through more than three glitch warp gates in a row, or else you'll be unable to find your way back, so I'm pretty sure something unusual happens if you manage to do that. I'm not in a hurry to figure out how to do it, though, because I'm pretty sure it will involve testing lots of walls to see if they're fake, and doing that means dealing with a lot more random battles. I DO want to do it eventually, though, and I may report back when I do (if you don't want to just look it up elsewhere).

Outside of that, no, it really is just an RPG. And honestly, that's what I was expecting, because I've played Scott Cawthon's games outside the FNaF series, and that's just what he likes making. He likes making RPGs with really simple mechanics (think NES Dragon Quest) where the difficulty comes from the fact that turns play out in real time, very quickly, and it's sometimes hard to tell what's going on (like Final Fantasy XIII, if you had to manually select every attack). If you've played The Desolate Hope, Iffermoon, or Legacy of Flan 4, you've played FNaF World. It's what I was expecting, so I wasn't disappointed, but it's not something I'd recommend to most people. If you're curious, just play one of his free games first to see if you like them.

Really, though, the original FNaF had a troll ending, too. I'm glad he still recognizes the strengths of the series.

It's a really barebones rpg that's currently missing a lot of features, such as seeing your characters' stats, what attacks do, and how far along you and enemies are on the atb bar. Though I don't think those additions will make it that much better. It's pretty mindless. There isn't really much of a plot either, and I'm not too sure why this game exists, unless it's a prototype for another game Scott wants to make.

Wanton Spoon

Never mind. I went for the alternate path I mentioned before, but it just led to another troll ending.

Supposedly there's two more endings to find, but I think I might just wait until other people do it instead.

Butt Ghost posted:

No, trust me. It's most likely exactly what he was going for. He's been making games like this for a while now.

Even FNaF was the same thing, i.e. a very simple game with very little plot*, with the main appeal coming from seeing the weird 3D models Scott put together. It's just that, in doing this, FNaF also happened to stumble across a particularly effective horror formula no one else had ever tried before.

*If it seems like there's more plot content in FNaF than there is in his other games, it's only because FNaF implies there's a lot going on behind the scenes. As far as on-screen plot development goes, it really is the same as his other games: At the beginning, something happens, and then at the ending, another thing happens.

Hi everyone.

This isn’t exactly an announcement that I’m enjoying writing, but it’s one that I feel I owe to the community.

You know, I’ve been accused of rushing my games ever since FNaF 1, but I’ve never felt that I’d released a game too early… until now.

There are a lot of features that this game should have had before release, features that I was told about, but ignored and didn’t implement. Features such as being able to see what abilities do during battle, or being able to see a stats page for your characters. These are features that any good RPG would have.

I got too eager to show the things that were finished, that I neglected to pay attention to the things that weren’t.

I’m going to fix this, and I’ll be updated the game with these features in the coming weeks.

So I say this to a community that I’ve enjoyed and respected for over a year and a half now- I’m sorry. I will continue to add features to the game and make it right.

UPDATE:
Here is a list of the features added to the game since the time of this post, and there will be more to come.

-Overworld map (press and hold TAB)
-Attack command descriptions
-Byte descriptions (when in Byte store)
-Chip descriptions in the Chips menu
