I'm convinced the success of the EVE goon clan has something to do with it although I can barely explain why. EVE is a mecca for rationalist edgelord libertarians and Goonswarm is pretty notorious for loving to screw with those exact people while also being insanely successful. Pretty short leap from 'goons run our favourite online game' to 'goons run our imaginery culture war enemies'. Also Glen Beck once accused them of being a front for the CIA, so it isn't without precedent.

You know, maybe the reason social justice on tumblr is a "thing" is that Tumblr contains a lot of teenagers , some of whom want a safe space to be transgendered, and others of whom want a safe space to be a voidkin spacedragon canissexual, and they've basically banded together and formed groups, and then splinter groups as people will do. Maybe there DOESN'T need to be a dark conspiracy involving a long-deleted board of Something Awful most tumblrites wouldn't have ever heard of. Maybe the lovely stuff that happens on tumblr has multiple causes, ranging from silly teenagers with a loose grasp on reality that are convinced they are being oppressed if people do not acknowledge they are djinn, to people who are looking for an excuse to bully people while pretending to be morally justified, and it doesn't all stem from some inherent dark evil cthulhu memeplex. Maybe. Just maybe.
