Pandemonium, I'm very sad to hear that you had to break up with your boyfriend. He's very brave for being able to go out in public as the true person he is. I wish him well as I know that Taiwan isn't as progressive as we all wish it was in regards to alternative sexualities. Question, when he goes out dressed up, how does he prefer to be addressed as, male or female?

Your last attempt made it clear you can't tell intentional word play from random word usage, so I'm going to go ahead and ignore any criticism you have of my Chinese unless you actually point out a real mistake. And "it doesn't look or sound authentic enough" isn't good enough, either.

Taiwan is about as progressive as it gets among the general populace. The Christians here are of course bigots, but thankfully they are a small, small minority. (I have never gotten more upset at a Youtube video than the one I saw of Christians creating human circles around gay individuals to bar the individuals from joining a gay rally or something in Taipei a few years back. Not a human wall-fence but moving human amoebae-circles that swallowed up gay individuals.) You'd know that if you lived in a city and not bumfuck hicktown or wherever you live. Come walk around Taichung on a weekend and see how many lesbian and faux-lesbian couples you see and how not a single person bats an eye. Literally no one, not even old people, give two shits about homosexuality any more. The standard answer is 開心就好了 when people are asked if their brother/sister/son/daughter/cousin/whatever is gay.

Oh yeah, there is bullying in schools? *color me surprised*. I'm going to go to Taipei this weekend for a weiya, and then I'll probably go to that big area in the middle of the city that is full of open-air gay bars and listen to the gay guys there bitch and moan about how much their fellow Taiwanese discriminate against them because Taiwan has a huge homophobic problem outside of its Christian minorities. (No, schools don't count because kids make fun of each other for literally anything.)

Yes and no. Kids will be kids and kids will be shits to each other. But the things kids make fun of each other for don't exist in a vacuum. It's a learned behavior. When kids mock each other for race, skin color, or sexual orientation, that's because they heard an adult, usually a parent, doing the same. So if kids are going around making fun of each other for being homosexual, that's because they're being exposed to that somewhere, which hints that Taiwan might not be perfectly accepting of non-heteronormative lifestyles. Now I can't attest to how much of this goes on in Taiwanese schools. But I don't think hand waving it as "kids will be kids" is fair in the context of this discussion.

I think you're overestimating parental influence. From what I understand, peer influence is much, much more important. For an example, see accents. Kids never never adopt their parents' accents and always always adopt their peers'. But this is super off-topic. All's I was saying was claiming kids make fun of each other about something is good evidence that polite society also has problems with that something is disingenuous.

I just read a couple of abstracts and it seems neither parental nor peer influence has much affect on racism and it's a complex mix of social pressures with contact being a large factor.

It's meant to be an insult because it is saying Taipei people are full of themselves and detached from the rest of the country/reality. Also, historically, it's the place with the most waishengren, so that adds to things. And the vast majority of tax money is spent on projects in Taipei.

Pandemonium posted:Where'd this happen because I am genuinely curious? I know of three notable cases in the last 6~ months. One in Taipei where someone was in general getting bullied/dealing with hate speech etc semi-regularly, culminated in a threatening message left in the person's bag while it was in the dorm. I know they withdrew from university, closed FB and poo poo, dunno if anything ever came of it. One in Tainan, transgender mtf is heading back to the dorms at night and a few (2? can't remember) guys start shouting insults and following her. She posted about the whole thing on facebook, and a not insignificant number of the student body attacked her, saying she made the whole thing up to force the school to let her into the female dorms or something. It was all recorded on the school's security cameras, so she was vindicated, but the general sentiment was "you're a weird guy in girl clothes" One more from a while back that I think was in Taichung? I can't remember honestly, but similar case, mtf in the male dorms was harassed. Guys were stealing underwear and generally crossing lines. I'm pretty sure I recall it ended with the school finding three accepting roommates, and actually moving her into the female dorms. Not sure if I can find this stuff again, but I'll look when I have free time if you really want to see.
