How do you fight the children of the atom, with a hazmat suit?

And on that note, how the hell do you properly play with vats, because I cant seem to hit poo poo with it and with aiming myself I hit headshots a lot more consistently than the odds vats gives me.

Yes re hazmat suit or a lot of rad-x and radAway.

For VATs, you need three things:
1) lots of precision on your weapon (so go long barrel , scope);
2) lots of range on your weapon as accuracy drops off very fast towards the end of range; and
3) lots of perception on your character as that's the vats aim stat.

I find that early on with a character around 4-6 perception with an off the shelf weapon I can get more headshot myself than with vats. Later with 8-10 perception and a modded rifle vats is much better.

Guess the perception is the problem. I do have a sniper rifle with long barrel, high accuracy and a long range but only 4-5 perception. Will put some points in perception to see if that helps. I currently can get max 2 shots of anyway.

Sorry, that was my question, how do I not get turned into a super mutant by those gamma guns? Does it help if you wear a hazmat suit?

Most of the time I don't use the power armor since half the parts are broken and I don't know how/if I can fix that. I'm probably retarded for hardly ever using PA.

You can fix power armor parts by having the broken pieces in your inventory, parking a frame near a repair station, and interacting with the repair station. When you go through the list of available parts, you can hit a button to repair broken pieces. Repair materials will be siphoned off your local workbench storage.

The Mysterious Stranger (or whatever the hell its called) is my favorite perk of all time.

Also never ending assault rifle is a pretty rad weapon. Never running amount of ammo is one thing, but never actually loving reloading is heaven.

Yeah it mostly looks good, if brown. The thing that doesn't hold up is the kind of awkward emptiness in places like Freeside and Westside, the Bethesda approach leaves a lot fewer places where you just end up bored with walking around (but more areas are just strictly combat). Too bad the main quest in 4 is awkwardly empty and boring.

the devs admit that they had to rush and hurry it to push it out for deadline reasons, not that it makes HH more enjoyable or anything. but I'm sure if they actually had time to finish it and not just work primarily on the weak plot, it'd be better. they had barely any time to work on the plot and HH kinda suffers all around as a result.

I love it as well. Except he loves to show up to kill radroaches and dogs but nowhere to be seen when a legendary deathclaw decides I'm a good snack.

The trick to fighting children of the atom is to strafe back and forth. The gamma gun's projectile is so slow it's hard to get hit in long distance engagements. With my melee character I just teleport murder them all instantly.

I still like Honest Hearts. It's rather nice and laid back compared to the frantic nature of Dead Money or the Lonesome Road endurance test.

Best part of Honest Hearts is finding all of the survivalist's terminals. Also, it has one of the best dialogs for ending the DLC's main quest if you have the appropriate perk, [Sneering Imperialist] Whatever. Joshua, put a cap in General Gobbledigook here.

EDIT: Not to mention that HH has some pretty cool loot. Not only do you get one of the most ridiculously overpowered pistols, you also get a unique service rifle that puts 12.7mm ammo to good use, and motherfucking Tommy guns. Best of all, these weapons were boosted by the Grunt perk, making them even more overpowered. You also get some pretty cool armor as well, like unique Riot Gear or if you're into stacking crits like crazy, Joshua's Graham's armor.

I can't believe I've never noticed this.... I only saw the transfer and enter options. Guess I'll suit up next time then. I have 4 power armors rotting in several villages.

That and practise strafing for those gamma bitches.

Hi Fallouters. I posted occasionally in the old thread when I was playing 3 and New Vegas and had a rollicking good time. Now that I'm getting further into 4 I thought I 'd better start posting again.

I do have a question that's probably been answered a thousand times already, but I did (skim)check the most recent pages and found nothing. I'm (I think) near the end of the main quest, down the Minutemen strand. I'm now at "Form Ranks", which asks you to recruit more settlements. Everywhere online tells me I need just eight, but surely I have more than that if by settlement it means "a place where I can use a workshop and where people are living". Someone on another site recommended waiting for the "Old Guns" quest to trigger, finishing it, and then seeing what happens. Should I do this, or is there anything else I can try? Thanks in advance.

My least favourite things so far are the atrocious subtitles. Also, my game can't seem to handle pulse grenades/mines without going mental with the graphical glitches. It made my first encounter with a Mr Gutsy even more "fun"...

I think to finish 4 with Minutemen you have to get thrown out of the Institute.

In my current build, I got both levels of chem tolerance, and it's pretty amazing. I never abused chems in any previous game, but now I'm a total junkie. Also, you get EXP for making them, so I was making high level chems anyway just to get EXP.

I'm stuck on the Drinkin' Buddy quest. Last playthrough I sent him to the Hotel Rexford on his own, and he got there just fine, though it did take a while. This time, when I load the quest he's not in Goodneighbor. There's a marker about halfway between Goodneighbor and his starting point, but nothing's there.

You might want to reload and escort him there; pathfinding seems a bit broken. The sentry bot at the robotics disposal yard never goes where I tell him, usually he just stands there.

So, I started a second playthrough, and I wanted to lock the npcs out of my workbench area in Sanctuary but alas, those shitheads from Concord just teleported in past my walls. This made me start over at the RR station and I thought I'd keep it small, maybe try to get 100% happiness there for shits n giggles. I had one settler a little food and water, assigned her a bed, left the dog and a bunch of turrets...went off adventuring. Later on, I stopped by Sanctuary and sent another settler over to RR, I may have done some more stuff in between but when I got back to the station it had a zero population and no bodies anywhere.

I'm annoyed, sure, but the worst part is I outfitted the original one with army fatigues and helmet.


In my other game, I saw an interesting glitch in the water, NE of Spectacle Island; during daylight hours, looking straight up and going underwater, there's a small area of discoloration above the underwater color (about an inch and a half wide) and in the background you can see a male Synth standing there, in profile. I suppose it's a loading screen picture?

I'm at the point of no return for finishing the game, I did all the missions for the Minutemen and the Railroad, all of Macready's loyalty stuff as well as a lot of incidental missions and exploring for things along the way. I'm going back and doing some of the more interested stuff I missed as well as locations marked on the map but not listed as a mission.

The game isn't short on content, but it would have been good to have the smaller factions more developed. The Atom Cats are only two small missions and a location. The Children of the Atom have one friendly NPC in the Glowing Sea and few sites that are just straight out hostile. You have entire factions that really fit the lore (and with Children of the Atom are linked to FO3) and they're less developed than some of the random locations you come across.

I would have liked to have seen more vaults as well. I guess there's a similar number to FO3 or NV, but I didn't find them as memorable.

For some reason, my playthrough the game never bothered spawning the Prydwen. It is actually possible to beat the game with the Institute that way (it showed up on the last mission). I didn't feel like starting over to do the other factions, so I went back to an earlier save to try to get the Railroad achievements. When Tinker Tom is supposed to fly you to the airship all the proper dialogue plays, but instead he swings around and flies you across the whole map and into the earth. After a few minutes of flying into the greyness of the underworld the game enters an infinite loading screen. :henget: Maybe I can get the Minutemen ending instead but there are no cheeves for that one.

One of NV's greatest strengths is having different raider groups actually be distinct entities that fit into existing lore, like they're tribes fleeing the NCR, escaped convicts, etc. instead of just being "raiders". Gunners, Talon Company, etc. are barely better than the totally generic ones. It makes some of the dull vaults like 3 in NV more memorable because the Fiends are memorable and people give you credit for slaughtering them.

East Coast Fallout is definitely a less civilized setting with fewer large organizations, but totally generic raiders take it too far, especially in 4 where you have Diamond City and a history of government. Various distinct raider groups making up the remnants of the regional government the Institute broke up would've been cooler, and the one place where you find out some raiders were ex Minutemen is cool like that.

Diamond City just didn't have enough people in it, every raider group I killed had 3x as many people as Diamond city the entire thing was essentially a ring of shops and 2 bars full of bad quests(except self esteem for Nick that was at least different)

Yeah it was physically big and had a standing militia and various other NPCs talking about it and quests connected to it but it didn't have much going on really. The actual city wasn't filling its in game role very well.

I think Vegas could feel like that but only really because of technical limitations (all the loading screens between and within the Strip and Freeside made them feel like two totally separate towns at times). Also in NV House and the NCR had really only had Vegas up and running for a few years in the state you find it so it's unsurprising it's not exactly Athkatla.

Fallout 4 just seems underwhelming this way, there's backstories on the terminals and what not but you're fighting the same enemies you see everywhere.

Me too. My favorite vaults had almost Twilight Zone style setups, like Vault 11 where you first encounter all of the posters and had to piece together what was going on. Fallout 4's vaults were pretty boring, except it was nice to see at least one vault where everything went pretty well for the residents.
