OH SNAP!
Too generic? First time making this kind of stuff. Wave racer, neon, future bass, whatever. Still have a lot of work to do but I'm quite enjoying it so far. Just takes a bit to get good imo

Edit: the bass is kind of hosed up I'm having trouble getting it to fit well with the melody

Does anyone have a recommendation on a free/cheap sample pack that has electric bass guitar samples included? I'm working on a track right now and I just can't get the right sound out of an operator for the bassline so was going to try my luck with a simpler + tasty bass sample.

I'd be surprised if the Kontakt Player free library didn't have something useful.

Also "operator" makes me think you're using Ableton Suite? There are a bunch of sample packs you can download in the ableton.com user area.

Doesn't Bitwig support stuff like loading 64 and 32 bit VSTs at the same time, and better control over midi commands, like sending a patch change command mid pattern?
Those were things I was complaining about wanting in Ableton that I guess Bitwig offers.

May 12, 2001

Yeah it can do both 64 and 32 bit VSTs simultaneously.

Not too sure about sending MIDI patch changes, haven't had a need for that of late.

I switched over quite a while back because I was tired of Ableton not being able to keep poo poo in time. Bitwig is a lot better about that than Ableton used to be. I've heard Ableton is better now, though still has some issues at least with M4L? Don't know don't care myself really.

In general I find Bitwig to be Ableton-like, with fewer features, but the features it does have work better, and there's also kind of a grabbag of oddball poo poo that nothing else really does the same way (the multitouch stuff they added, their MIDI spec for note expression type control and corresponding functionality with Linnstrument and a few plugins, etc).

Anyway I think there is a demo available so just give it a try!

Thanks for the suggestion. Using the Kontakt5, I am getting closer to the sound I want. Coincidentally, I ended up completely re-writing the bassline once I got the sound I wanted.

This is a 2:20 trap tune that I made this morning:

https://soundcloud.com/glxe/the-30th

I have a pretty huge backlog of unfinished projects that I should be working on, but I felt like making something that was not in my usual wheelhouse. It's fun to just dick around and experiment, but I still feel the guilt that I should be working on 'real actual' music I'm interested in.

I've even gone so far as to make a spreadsheet with t he steps I need to complete the EP I've been threatening for years. It'll be around four or five tracks of 'cinematic' inspired EDM, namely inspired by Glitch Mob, Justice, Nero etc. Does anyone have any experience in merging 'cinematic' with 'danceable'? It's pretty drat tricky in parts.

This may be a stupid question, but is there a term for the type of backing percussion in this track

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_1uGy3tGY4

The hits vary but I'm referring to what you'll hear at 3:00 in, for example. I really love that fast paced style of hats and kicks but never really know how to articulate it.

Most of the time the cinematic bits are relegated to the breaks. Kshmr's stuff is often a good example of this. Check out https://soundcloud.com/spinninrecords/kshmr-the-spook-ft-basskillers-b3nte or https://soundcloud.com/kshmr/kshmr-jammu-16-bit-master-version-2-1 for example. Also, often times the cinematic feel has a lot to do with harmony and instrument choice (lots of big horns and orchestral percussion, for instance) more than anything else.

Also, I forgot how much producing dubstep can be (not done yet, obviously): https://soundcloud.com/4th/2216a/s-g2rLb

OK I DON'T GET IT
Urgh, can anyone tell me how to set up my Axiom Pro with Ableton Live so that I can map the pads to things like tap tempo, trigger clips, etc., but have it send something other than note data - MIDI CC messages maybe? Is that I want? I'm finding the manual horrendously confusing and not being overly familiar with either Ableton or MIDI terminology in general is not helping. It seems like it can be done but I'm not overly sure how.

My basic aim is to be able to play synths with my band, switch between instruments, sync wobbles and stuff with the tempo by tapping it, and occasionally maybe trigger a drum loop or sample. I guess my best bet would be to turn off HyperControl altoghether and map everything manually?

By the way, I know that playing to a click would be much easier than tapping the tempo, but the whole band seem pretty resistant to this idea, and I don't think our beatboxer (we don't have a drummer) would be very good at it. Plus we have quick a few tempo/time signature changes.

I'm thinking of getting launchpad with the aim of just using User Mode 2 to make all this mapping stuff easier, would that be a good idea/work?

Sorry for cross-posting this from the ableton thread, but this one gets a lot more activity.

I've tried and failed this many times - figuring out anything beyond Live Control in Ableton is solely in the realm of black magic as far as I can tell.

I'd recommend you spend a lot of time the cmd/ctrl + M midi mode and seeing if you're able to map what you want to the pads. There's only 8 of them, so you're going to be fairly limited. A 1st gen Launchpad would be super cheap in a post Push world. There's also apps for your phone or tablet that can send midi signals - I've used the trial of LiveKontrol (i think) and it may give you what you need.

That said, here's a thing I started yesterday using it. It's still a completely unmastered mess, but it gives some idea of how the instruments work:

Sounds like you'd fit right at home in the synth thread, we all make beepy and not much more :downs: It sounds like you got the right idea though; much like drawing or other artistic endeavors the only way to "git gud" is by practice, so keep making poo poo. If what you want is to make songs, practice making songs. If what you want is making a beepy, keep making a beepy!
Just be careful; before you know it you might be flat broke and knee deep in eurorack modulars making robot farts.
