Is Marshall Gorilla supposed to be a weird Cowboy Bebop reference? He looks basically exactly like Jet, but with the scar on the wrong eye, and Ed used a code name for him once that was Marshall Banana. Maybe I'm just looking too far into this. Anyway, nice chapter. Excited to get the story moving a bit again.

I thought Marshall Gorilla was a fairly direct Monsieur Mallah reference, but I guess until we see a brain in a jar it could be any martially inclined gorilla.

There's three bigtime gorillas in DC comics: Gorilla Grodd, Monsieur Mallah, and the Ultra-Humanite. I imagine there was a time when editorial thought "A monkey on the cover means sales!"

Yes? That is how it worked during for silver age dc. They would analyze the sales trends and if they thought monkeys were popular there would be a bunch of comics with monkeys on the cover. It isn't really a secret.

There are a couple of things that comic artists just loving love drawing and Gorillas are one of them. I'd probably say dinosaurs are number two.
