Am I thinking too much about this? I am the IoSM.
It is, but maintaining that average isn't automatic; the scoring has to be periodically renormalized if and as the population performance shifts.

That one was from TheSpark a bajillion years ago. It basically said "smart people prepare to be disappointed."

Intelligent people were apparently far, far more likely to keep answering questions and not know what was up. I scored like a 36 on that one.

Is it really? I'm firmly opposed to spanking but it was pretty standard practice in the US up until very recently. It's gonna take time to filter out.

To be fair to the clickbait Facebook quiz, it does say that's the average for the USA, not the whole world and that the UK average is 100.

It's horrifying because its bad for children in every single conceivable way, and there isn't a single peer reviewed study that supports spanking.

The only reason it sticks around is because people are idiots and refuse to listen to experts.

Spanking is pretty obviously bad. You are beating a child, it's not hard to see it isn't a good thing.

It's hard for people to accept studies showing the harm of corporal punishment because it works on the same cyclical nature of more serious abuse. A lot of people pave over the bad memories of punishment, repeating to themselves how necessary it was till they believe it and see it as something their own kids need. That's why people come out of the woodwork on Facebook to defend it. They've internalized it to the point that they're not capable of admitting their parents did something lovely.

In one of the earlier incarnations of this thread someone once commented on how passionately people will defend their parenting techniques on Facebook as the only true right way to raise a child, and I'm reminded of that post every time spanking comes up in this thread. While I don't spank my child, I'm not about to automatically condemn those who do or assume they're abusive monsters.

It's just as possible for a loving and nurturing parent to raise a well adjusted child using physical discipline as it is for an emotionally abusive monster to raise a broken shell of a human being without ever laying a finger on them. Raising a human being is a ridiculously complex endeavor that can't be reduced to something as simple as whether spanking was involved or not.

Try talking to some of the newest crop of feminists. Not every one of them is an idiot, but if the generally idiotic way they use some terms (like cultural appropriation or their views on the selectivity of gender).

The sort of people that spend inordinate times trying to make sure that the laws of a political party aren't "stuck in the gender binary" but when you point out that the laws aren't translated into other languages, which is something actually relevant to the swathes of people of foreign origin in the country and not the tiny minority outside binary, just get irate and confused.

Anyway, have some more horrifying Nordic people.

There was a good summary of spanking I saw once, albeit much better phrased. Does your child have the ability to understand why they are being spanked?

Yes - then loving talk to them instead of hitting them.

No - then don't loving hit them.
