I have managed to keep hype level to minimum. Mostly because I cant afford $90 CAD for a video game right now. e: The Bureau is currently $4 on Steam, is it worth $4?

I still put it down after I discovered the modpack puts all your stored items in the hangars during base defense though, because that's when I realized the mod is made by people who don't want you to have fun.

Save your $4 on that heretical piece of poo poo, and go buy some bulk cookies at Dollarama (might I suggest anything by Biskwi? They're generally quite good) or a lovely plastic dinoausre you can pretend is an alien instead. The Bureau really shows the development hell that it was caught in for so long. Avoid.

Just got done listening to a summery of Xcom 2: Resurrection. My theory was wrong. Xcom failed in the first 2-3 months. Only ever downed 2 UFOs (one of them being the Avenger). They did not even get attacked and wiped out, they just got shutdown and disbanded. Also the book is awful and a massive waste of time to even listen to a summary.

Bureau is not directly offensive, it's just kind of mediocre. It OK to play with, honestly. Speaking of Final Mod, I've started a game of it. The techtree IS kind of a glorious mess, but I love all the options it gives and have. Not to mention I love sending dogs to rip sectoid apart.

i payed the price of free for The Bureau (thanks weirdo card buyers) and it's okay I guess? It's real janky, being tied to 2012 xcom makes it feel goofy, everyone talks like they've had an aneurysm, and somehow they never patched out the issue everyone complained about at launch where your squad mates don't want to loving stay where you tell them. Other than that it feels like a weird Bioshock/Mass Effect mash up with xcom aliens awkwardly smashed in.

The only ill will I ever held towards The Bureau was when I thought it had usurped the X-Com name and spiked the chance of an actual sequel/remake for good (like at the time the closest thing were those janky UFO Aftermath games). Now that the actual remake was released, amazing, and did well enough for a sequel, it seems worth being magnanimous about the whole thing

People were a lot more angry about The Bureau before they learned of XCOM EU, before they learned it wasn't the only XCOM game coming out. Oh god, the rage was pretty big. I don't think I even FINISHED the Bureau, I didn't really like it all that much. It was pretty janky, it's true.

It's worth remembering that when they first revealed the bureau it was just straight up called XCOM, and when some executive/marketer was asked why they were making a shooter out of that IP, they basically said that no one wanted to play turn-based games. I'm not sure if Enemy Unknown had even been greenlit at that time. That said, I'm almost glad for those doldrums because it made watching the Enemy Unknown E3 trailer that much more amazing. The Bureau was ok it was a really average game though. I remember the story being fairly interesting my issue with it was that it was supposed to be a squad based shooter but just ended up playing like a long mass effect combat sequence.

It was in development at least as long as the Bureau was but for some drat reason 2K decided that Bureau was the big-money project everyone would be excited about and so only advertised it at first while Firaxis' strategy game was kept hush-hush until only a year before it came out. It was a strange and stupid year for games. And not the first time a beloved strategy game got replaced by a first person shooter (they also did that with Syndicate).

Syndicate is another great example of a company attempting to revive an old beloved franchise by wedging it into the FPS genre with a crowbar, except in the case of Syndicate there wasn't a real Syndicate game waiting in the wings to make everyone forget about the FPS. It's a shame, too, because the Syndicate FPS was actually pretty OK and would have been fine if it had been its own thing.

I have to say, Resurrection is not that bad. Like yeah it isn't a work of art but...it's a video game tie-in book. Like I'm not sure what people were expecting (well ok I know r/xcom seem to have been expecting Long War: The Novel and thus was surprised when the officially authorized book stuck to vanilla nuCOM's action movie logic), these things are designed to really only tide you over for a bit in an information drought as you wait for the release of the game, and just had the misfortune to have its release date delayed by quite a bit in time for a lot of stuff about XCOM 2 to be revealed.

The Bureau is a good game, hamstrung through years of being stuck in development hell and frequent rewrites. It's also super bad at explaining itself, and it's full of evidence of it's rewrites and redesigns. All that aside, it's a fun, neat game. There's a LP of it in on the archive, and most of it features co-commentary from one of the developers, forums user Silent W (he also did an episode of JadeStar's XCOM:EW LP). It's actually really neat and very fun, but it takes some getting used to.
