There's lots of variables that make comparisons across decades a poor metric of popularity? No way!

The Glumslinger posted:Except, isn't TV viewership pretty much down across the board from the 90s? Even when compared to a decade ago. Firefly got cancelled for having viewership numbers that would now be a hit. That 19.8 average for the X-Files would make it the most-watched non sports show on TV (or really close to it), and back then it was what, top-20 at best?

These days(well, for the past decade or so) networks care more about other factors like demographics, blu ray sales, and binge-appeal than they used to, so the emphasis on ratings isn't what it was. If a show has a niche audience, but that audience is critical to the established ad contracts, it may be worth renewing it regardless of ratings. Or if the show has low ratings, but does really well on Netflix, that may justify its renewal because it means viewers are fairly likely to switch to watching episodes live if they catch up.

I just watched episode 1 + 2 and I am so happy that the new broadcasting company kept the original 90's "Strictly Confidential" translation beneath the X-files logo in the intro. EP 1 didn't impress me much, but 2 was so loving good. Can't wait for more MOTW episodes.

Networks are also making a lot more of the content they air instead of buying it from an outside studio. Which means they get the money from syndication/streaming rights and can tolerate lower ratings from those shows because of it,

It's probably been answered but should I watch the entire series through first before watching these new episodes? Will I hurt my enjoyment if I go to these new ones "blind"? I was really casual watcher of X-files back in the day and I have some really, really general knowledge about it but I have no idea of the overall narrative except for the obvious.

In the first episode they go over what you need to know. The second episode is just like watching a random episode from the series. You should still watch the series from the beginning eventually, though. Especially now that it looks like a new show in 16:9 HD.

I think this might belong in this thread: http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/29/us/cia-releases-x-files-ufo-investigations-irpt quote:The Central Intelligence Agency posted documents of reported Unidentified Flying Objects that range in date from the late 1940s to the 1950s. While playing off the hype of the TV show reboot "The X-Files," the CIA broke down the cases into two categories, whether you side with Agent Mulder or Agent Scully. It's not the FBI, but at least our government appears to have SOME sense of humor.

The X-Files broadcast it's first episode in Australia, and there's a reference early on by Mulder of a couple in Victoria, Australia who were kidnapped by Aliens. Did other countries get a reference to themselves? It sounded very out of place as a reference to "aliens have been known to kidnap people, here's an example from your own country!"

Like in other shows whenever you have the character who knows all the facts and has a lot of theories it just seems like it comes from nowhere and they know it because they just know it. With Mulder it always felt like this guy spent a lot of time in a room going crazy thinking about this poo poo.

I hope not because GMOs have been a thing for like 20 years, if the original X-Files run lasted much longer they probably would've done an episode about alien hybrid corn or something.
