How much would one of those cost? Are they planning on giving them away to people in 3rd world countries ?

Possibly. That's the guy who owns 5-Hour Energy. At least if the idea is bad it looks like he's only wasting his own money.

I almost feel like someone watched that episode of Black Mirror and thought that might be a good idea. Alternately, the bit in Soylent Green where Chuck Heston and Edward G. Robinson are trading off time on the stationary cycle to power up their apartment.

Germstore posted:

If it's super efficient I think you'd get 200 watts tops. More than enough to charge low power devices. In theory you could probably design a refrigerator with a huge amount of insulation and it would work as long as you didn't open it often.

e: looked closer in some of the shots and you can see the meter on the thing staying around 200.

I think they're pairing this with some sort of flywheel storage to get more out of it or at least keep the energy generated going for up to 24 hours. So, cycling for one hour will generate 200 Watt Hours, but you can then use that to power a single 8W LED bulb 24 hours, a 14W CFL bulb 14 hours, or a 1000 watt hot plate or a microwave oven for less than 8 minutes.

I think to be actually usable to most people, it would really need to store more than a hour worth of cycling energy. If you could cycle 8 hours, that would get you a 1.6 kilowatt hours, and then you can actually use stuff like hot plates or microwaves.

I guess if you can't be bothered pedaling for 8 hours a day you could just hook it up to your moped or an electric bicycle for a few hours.

The moped I can see, or really any form of motor transportation, but I think the electric bicycle might be a little counter-intuitive, just because if you have the electricity to charge a electric bike, you probably don't need to pedal a stationary cycle to generate electricity.

Nah I'm sure there's some way this'll work. Maybe use another electric bike to run another stationary cycle so you can power the first electric bike to run the first stationary cycle?

If you're a serious athlete, you could do that. If you're a competitive cyclist, you could probably do 400 watts output and keep that up for an hour, and then if you assume the generator is 50% efficient, okay, 200 watt-hours in one hour of serious cycling.

The typical user isn't going to generate near that much.

Pretty much only pros who take drugs can do 400w for an hour. Most people would struggle to do 200 over that period of time, and a good amateur racer might be able to do 300 or a little more. Also riding a stationary bike for more than an hour really sucks, and doing it at that level of power would really not be pleasant.

If it worked like a real vagina it'd require the entire apparatus moving back and forth instead of just the jerk-off-motion part, which is a whole new layer of dick-ripping pain potential.

fyi The term has also been used less accurately (since there's no "tele-" element) to refer to robotic sex, i.e. computer controlled sex toys that aim to substitute for or improve upon sex with a human partner.[2][3] Promoters of these devices have claimed since the 1980s they are the "next big thing" in cybersex technology.[4]
