A little late to the mining pics but these are from my home town. The draglines are powered by electricity and have huge cables going to them. They also walk on feet instead of tracks due to their size.

Dragline dickwaving, meet Ohio's Big Muskie:

It's really hard to overstate how big it was, it's still the third heaviest land vehicle ever at 27 million pounds and it WALKED.

Disgruntled Bovine

For those who are curious, walking draglines "walk" because it's simpler, cheaper, more reliable and produces lower ground pressure than tracks.

Draglines work from on top of the overburden (rock and soil above what's being mined) as opposed to stripping shovels and bucket wheel excavators which work from down inside the pit. This means they have to have lower ground pressure to avoid collapsing the pit wall, hence the walking. Tracks are faster than walking (though not much), and also allow for a smaller rotating mass, which means less power is needed to rotate the house and boom.

This is the Marion 6360, nicknamed The Captain.

It was the largest stripping shovel and the heaviest land vehicle ever built. The sheer size of the Big Muskie did overshadow it however, and its' 160 cubic yard dipper was smaller than the Muskie's 220 yard bucket. None the less, I find The Captain more impressive if only because it still looks like a "steam shovel" just scaled up to gargantuan proportions.

There's also something to be said for tracks that can put a sandcrawler to shame.

Sadly at this point stripping shovels have been completely replaced by walking draglines in the US. The draglines are simply better at reaching the deeper coal deposits that are being mined these days.

The one I saw from across the lake is only 17 or so million pounds and 169-yard bucket, but has a longer throw (435-foot boom vs. Big Muskie's 310-footer). So, overall more efficient?

Here's a closeup video with amusing commentary of the same model:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gTx7Lxx28E

That little shiny thing under the boom is a 115-ton Cat D11 bulldozer, which is itself insanely huge by human standards.

"Oh gently caress," indeed.

When they scrap one, they don't gently caress around with cranes, they blow it like a bridge or radio tower:

They also came in (relatively) teensy size, back before hydraulic excavators were a thing:

:3: (Also available in shovel configuration, if you look at that guy's other videos -- he has one of each.)

Ok so when you say they 'walk' what does that mean exactly? Do they just have a flat base with no locomotive features at all and get dragged around everywhere, or what? Also I'm having trouble understanding how it can be efficient to have something that huge and ponderous to move; doesn't it just excavate the area surrounding it in a matter of weeks (because of it's gigantic shovel and arm and poo poo) and then you have to spend another week moving the thing again?

All that work and it's still got an exposed pod filter just hanging loose in the engine bay. For shame.

It's got two legs that move around in a circular motion, and a center piece that can spin it around like a lazy susan. Very slow, but as mentioned, very little ground pressure. It just needs to move around the mine it gets built in, sort of like how those huge mining dump trucks only have to be built onsite and shuffled around. Easier than trying to rebuild supports and dismantling the machine every time you need it to move it.
