Grey, every time you bomb Manilla, or any other hex, and don't see any damage, it is not fog of war. You just aren't hitting anything with those bombers. If you were hitting anything, you would get messages in the combat replay, even if they didn't show up in the FOW affected combat report. From what I can see you're not getting either, which means that all that bombing you are doing is ineffectual. The reason why has everything to do with the altitude that you're bombing at - it looked like 29,000 feet for Manilla - which is far too high to expect any damage. You have to drop your planes down to 15,000 or less to get any sort of reliable result. Yes, this means that you're exposing your planes to anti-aircraft fire, but at least they'll be hitting something. Currently, you're just incurring operations losses with no gain whatsoever.

Danann posted:Funny thing about that is that there was this four stacker destroyer called the USS Edsall that was somewhat like this. Except instead of dodging bombs for weeks, the Edsall was dodging shellfire from two battleships and two cruisers for hours until the guy in charge of the task force asked for the Kido Butai to personally dive bomb this one destroyer so their shells can actually hit for once. Quoting this from a page back. This poo poo is proof that reality is waaay stranger than fiction. quote:the Japanese surface vessels (2 cruisers, 2 battleships) fired 1,335 shells at Edsall that afternoon with no more than one or two hits, which failed to stop the destroyer.....Subsequent Japanese navy reports referred to the incident as "a fiasco". The last survivor of a small US task force basically blunders into the Kido Butai.Realising just how utterly screwed they are, the Edsall puts on a master class in evasion.

Steinrokkan had a pretty good Japanese one that got abandoned twice. He had invaded the western half of Australia when the LP petered out (for the second time). Shame too, he had a really great style of interspersing gameplay with actual WW2 photography and stories. You need archives to view the thread now: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3704111 To compare to Grey's progress, but this time in-game (2nd February 1942), Steinrokkan had just taken Rangoon, a theater that otherwise has been silent in this LP so far.

Hmm, I need more subs here. Not that I'm complaining about the work of those on station. Clunk! Mwah ha ha! We pay another visit to the Philippines. The reinforcements were trying to path through Singapore, so I've had to land them at Mersing. Ahh, my first “what the hell!? When did I order this?” moment of the war. At least I know they have a ton of Banshee's in Port Moresby. We crack a fort level at Jahore. This means we should be able to clean up here now. That's two less units to worry about. This is the cause of those occasional destroyed on ground reports. Well, the next screen is not going to be pretty. The worst thing? ITS BLOODY EMPTY!

When you create a task force to go somewhere, by default it will turn around and come home when it's done unloading. You have to explicitly click a little bit of text to change it to "stay at destination." You have to do this every time. It is very easy to forget. Edit: If you look at the task force image in Grey's post a couple above, it says "Retirement allowed." That's the thing you have to click to say "No Retirement allowed." pthighs fucked around with this message at 20:17 on Feb 2, 2016 |

Banshees. So good! WITP pathing is very very special. You really have to watch your task forces near the front lines for doing dumb things. And even if you look, they might make their first move before you notice they've left port, in to the waiting arms of the Joker's Exploding Octopus.

More forces land as we push deeper into the DEI. Johore may well see a shock attack tomorrow. Manado falls to our forces. I'm mainly showing this for something to say. Looks like we may be seeing some movement in the next few days – our superstack in China has reached its next destination, and will attack tomorrow. Yesterdays fun continues.

Grey, the reason you're not hitting anything is because you're bombing from the stratosphere.
|
# ? Feb 3, 2016 20:40 |

I'd start by dropping your height by 20,000 and working your way down from that.

This was an excellent read, and it's just started back up again for anyone who was following it before. Actually, GH, I think you'd benefit from taking a look. Saros chooses some different screens to screenshot that you tend not to show, like the tally of aircraft losses. Might be worth the occasional screenshot in this LP?

Grey, the AI has its heavy bombers operating at ~12,000 feet lower than your medium and light bombers. You might just want to drop their altitude. A lot.

# ? Feb 3, 2016 23:07 |

Climbing to 27,000 feet is gonna take them about half an hour. Then they'll be dying because half those planes don't have good heating or oxygen supplies.

Clunk! Mwah ha ha! I really hate these guys. The Allies wake up tot he fact we have troops a few miles from Port Moresby. Okay. Maybe a hundred miles or so, but you know what I mean. I have some ships about to raid the Makassar straights. This could be fun. The assault a Johore costs us some vehicles, but I think we can break them here. We attack to try and reduce their forts – as you can see, the forts are the only think keeping them alive at this time. Doom stack crush puny Chinese! Time to march northeast! Another advance of a different scale. And another destroyed unit. The Shock attacks seem to have worked, I just need to find some way to get Bataan moving – I'm going to give them some time to recover and then I may have to try a shock attack here. It's going to be costly, but I need to get those forts down! Its a bad month for our ships. Grey Hunter fucked around with this message at 19:06 on Feb 4, 2016 |
