LIBERALS WILL BE RE-ELECTED IN A LANDSLIDE

There is a really good story on background briefing at the moment about an asylum seeker who was hosed over by ministerial stupidity. While in a detention center, he got into a fight in the cafeteria. No one was seriously hurt. But he, along with four other men, were later convicted of a felony over it. 6 month suspended sentence.

This was extremely bad timing, because Tony Abbott, from opposition, was agitating for all asylum seekers convicted of a crime to be denied entry. The Immigration minister at the time, (Chris Bowen, I believe), directly intervened with this guy was accepted as a refugee, and put him back in detention. He stayed there for four years, his fate in total limbo.

Ministers simply cannot be trusted with judicial power. They are too beholden to the whims of fickle politics. The fact that they can even be vested with this power is a systemic failure on the constitutional level. I believe that the minister having the power to deny individual entry visas is similarly destructive, and the fact that we are being made used to it with easy examples like this rape apologist POS is only more worrying.

Here's the podcast. Seriously worth a listen, to hear how the wheels of injustice turn around policy failures like this

Oh wait it isn't it's just gently caress the poors.

There's the general deterrence aspect, if others get caught and people know investigations occur you'd hope they're less likely to do it themselves.

I'd also wager a large portion of people abusing the system are closer to middle-class. Didn't the last full scale investigation show pensioners were the biggest group defrauding the system?

It's always the way, they make a song and dance about welfare fraud till they realise it's OAP who commit it then it gets shelved as a waste of money and time.

All that juicy metadata has to be data-mined by someone. Private investigators might cost, but they're also conveniently at legal arms length when an inevitable fuckup happens.

You're right about the pensioners, but they'll gently caress the poors too to justify the budget, which will grow and grow.

Pictures of nude men (and women) are generally considered not safe for work (but not necessarily porn).

You were a lot prettier before you opened your mouth to talk about poo poo you obviously got wrong. Just because Pavel doesn't fit your idea of gender norms doesn't make him gay.

This is some proper NWS Pavel if you were walking the line at work.

MrsMachineGun was outraged this morning about the proposed changes to the senate voting laws this morning - while I argued that the current system is less than representative the other side of the coin is Libs and Labor want to change it so they can have more seats for themselves. Is it worth changing to keep nutballs like Leyonhelm out or worth keeping for the occasional good 'un like Muir to slip through?

Fun fact - Leyonhjelm would still have been elected under OPV, as likely would have been Dio Wang, Glenn Lazarus and not only Nick Xenophon but his running mate Stirling Griff. In fact, in NSW the loser would have been Arthur Sinodinos. Antony Green did some excellent analysis on the historical trends, too.

The current system is utterly indefensible. If you want a lottery for the Senate, then propose a lottery. The current system is a bullshit undemocratic farce. OPV means that parties challenging the Senate might have to do things like build a constituency, develop a platform and attract voters, rather than pick an interesting name and cross their fingers.

I'm just going to clear my throat and say again that I'm actually gay and I don't think the Pavel party is appropriate for here. No judgements on Pavel's sexuality but I don't think Laserface is really that stupid for assuming at least some of those pictures were intended as homosexual pornography.

I know how wrong I am about this but I thought this thread was maybe supposed to be about Australian politics or something...

I post maybe once a month but otherwise lurk; the thread isn't normally not safe for work and I don't really get why people are shocked when someone raises an objection that it might not be appropriate or try to turn it into an argument about gender norms and the nature of pornography. I found the pictures uncomfortable as well, has nothing to do with my view of sexuality, it's more that sometimes I browse SA on public computers and not everyone who might look over my shoulder is in on the joke

The reason for lack of kittens varies. Sometimes stream quality is poo poo, A lot fo the time they are asleep either off cam or far away from the camera where you can barely make them out. Other times it isn't showing them, but semi-feral cats being kept in happier conditions while recovering from their spays (Normally immediate release, but it is very rainy over there at the moment so they keep em safe for a few days to heal), and right now the main reason is that almost all of the current crop have been adopted off so there just isn't much catting going on. Kitten season is going to be starting soon though, so maybe more kittens then?

I do occasionally link the streams themselves in the auspol irc if you want to pop in and have a look.
