Oh my god this entire chapter is pure gold. Some of the best Luffy moments in awhile. There's really a lot packed in here. Edit: I love how Kinemon and Kanjuro are just this dorky Rakugo/Manzai combo. What's Kaido's current goal? I remember his introduction chapter was poorly translated, was he aware of Dofy being downed? I remember he said something like, "Dammit Joker, hurry up! It's time to start the war that will end the world!" or something to that effect. I wasn't sure if he was upset at Dofy for being beat, and/or if he was deciding to end the world based on the fact that he won't be getting Smile anymore?

Dumb enough? No. Once he finds out Luffy disrupted his SMILE production though, and to that extent disrupted the source of strength for his underlings, he'll probably be pissed enough. The thing Kaido was screaming about was that he wanted Mango to give him more SMILE, so he'd have the strength to start a massive war.

So this chapter we learn much more the kind of power dynamic present in the new world. Big Mom(Mam...whatever) is a very tactical, family-based person. Very similar to the mafia or some other criminal organization. She has connections all over the world and has a vast information network, as evidenced by the extent of her crew's knowledge about Sanji as well as Pekoms talking about joining of bloodlines, to use as leverage to accomplish her goals. Obviously ruthless, but also very measured in her approach, it seems. So long as the islands under her control pay their protection (candy), they are safe. Any slip up and they are crushed. Overall very mafioso-like. They are the "tactical/intellectual power" enemy. Kaidu is much more... direct. He and his crew just levels whatever is in their way (Zou being a good example). Uncaring and brutish, but ultimately effective do to sheer strength. They fill the role of the "raw power" foe of the yonku. Shanks is the frienemy, of course. He represents a sort of final hurdle for Luffy, as well as his crew (Luffy and Shanks, Yassop and Ussop, etc), to prove they are the real deal and trully worthy of Pirate King status. Black Beard is... Black beard. His crew is both forceful like Kaidu's and tactical like Big Mam's. He is a culmination of Luffy's journey and a very introspective sort of enemy due to the contrasts between him and Luffy as far as their objectives and dreams and all that.

I find it interesting how much the Yonkou basically assert their right to own your entire reality. It's basically a totalitarian Big Brother (or Big Mother in this case  ) state except with unaccountable pirates lording over everything.For as bad as Akainu is and as corrupt the World Government, I think I'd rather not have the heads of my friends and family delivered to me in a box Seven-style. No wonder regular folks prefer the WG over pirates. It puts Hannyabal's speech about protecting people from pirates in a new context.

That's why Kidd was setup as going after him, because Luffy will never attack Shanks properly because he owes him so much despite anything he says to the contrary. It'd be the equivalent of him saying he'll attack Ace or Sabo if they were an Emperor, it's just not gonna happen. By removing him it's easier to setup a conflict that makes sense, especially because Kidd is pretty clearly depicted as being a force on par or even better than Luffy

Yeah Luffy vs. Shanks would be too painful, Oda would never do that to us. Also, Kidd needs a rap sheet before we care about him going down. So far we're only told he attacks civilians or something offhand.

i think the kidd alliance will succeed with defeating shanks before luffy has a chance to fight him, i dont see luffy getting that fight with shanks and kidd does still need something to make him a real player edit: i also think sanjis marrying jewellery bonney so take my wild theories with a grain of salt
