Yeah I don't get this either, I thought that a Steam pre-order would just be, y'know, download the game but Steam doesn't let you play it until the unlock date.

I've got it unpacking now, I had to go to the store page for XCOM2 and repeatedly hit the "You own this game, play now" button until Steam finally realized "huh oh yeah it's a half hour past the release date isn't it."

You know, these timed missions could easily bump up the limit by 1-2 rounds and still give a decent challenge. As it stands it's way too easy to get screwed over by the layout and enemy placements.

Edit: There are a lot of timed missions.

Finishing the game with everyone else's continues
I spent an hour making 40 Bogans and some celebrities this morning and then after starting to play somehow I lost 7 hours and one Australian actor pretending to be a Canadian superhero.

Game is fun and I feel like I've barely even dipped my toes into it. Doomsday clock is pretty oppressive on the emotions though.

I played the tutorial to get back into the mindset and immediately failed the first mission because all my squad panicked.

It's good to be back.

Don't worry about the timed missions... Completing the timed objective is what counters the dark event, which is hardly necessary to beat the campaign. Killing all the bad guys is what wins most missions regardless of how long you take. The exception to that rule is the forced evacuation missions but those are the same frequency as council missions in EU.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who ragequit over the timed missions

I get it now, the timer is not to be trifled with, but man I had 3 really good dudes who were literally 2 spaces away from the evac, and they all got captured. Super loving frustrating. I think the worst part is that the aliens who dropped in on the last round dropped in in an entirely surrounded, flanked position

Performance is pretty lovely, I wonder if they are using TressFX (the hair does look pretty good.) You also can't zoom out very far; I was trying to get a soldier in a position to shoot a mind-controlling pectoid, but literally could not put both on the screen at once (and you need to see the pectoid to see if it has the crosshairs meaning you can shoot.)

It's worth noting that the mousewheel isn't zoom, zoom is holding Z or using T and G, you can get pretty far out like that.

Also the trick to timed missions is to not kill everything, do the objective and then worry about aliens or just get the gently caress out, you don't even get corpses from evac missions.

The line you can't see which is just off screen is:

"Let me at the aliens. The worst that they have. Not even death will save them from me."

Because, you know, quoting Harlan Ellison wasn't enough. :v:

Is there a way to paste text into the bio field or do you have to do it by hand for every soldier?

it means you actually have to dash the first few turns so you're not screwed. But yeah I'm playing basically ironman on commander and I haven't been screwed over by the timed missions yet. Never had it come down to under two turns so far

then again maybe I just lucked out on the randomized maps

The problem is for the three missions I mentioned:
* if you just "did the objective" on the first, you'd have gotten flanked by Advent
* the only way to "do the objective" in the second was to kill all the aliens because they were shooting the thingamabob
* the third was a civilian escort mission with basically no cover from the escort's location to evac outside of a few explosive cars and a bus shelter. Actually there were a few pillars but Advent was taking that cover already so

Wow, this game is terribly optimized :sigh: The only graphics setting that actually makes a difference is the anti-aliasing, even so it's chugging at 20-45 fps.

People even with ludicrously beastly machines are reporting getting inexplicably shite framerates, how on earth did Firaxis miss this during development?

The timed missions aren't that bad. The objective ones are a little finnicky, but they're there to encourage you to move and and not just super sneakily abuse concealment. If you get a read on the map though (or save scum) you can blitz past a lot of things. and sneak your way to an objective to hack/blow it up, and then go kill the aliens. I like the timed extraction ones, to a certain extent. I'm sure it can be very frustrating if it doesn't work or you lose dudes by a few squares, but when it works it's great fun. I actually had an awful blacksite mission where I lose two dudes, but managed to get a Codex and managed to grab the macguffin and flee as the reinforcements landed.

I feel some of the timers are dumb and too short, and should be longer, because I enjoy getting to skip enemies and EVAC and I don't need the timer telling me to do it. What I'd like to see in a mod is for certain timed missions to have shorter times, but not have the time start UNTIL you go and break concealment or activate the objective. Like some of the timed extraction ones don't start until you break concealment or get the VIP. And if they start without concealment then the timer is longer.

What I really want is a Shut Up Bradford mod, so he'll stop telling me things I already know and stop withholding control because TOO MANY CIVILIANS ARE DYING when the first one dies. EW did that poo poo too and it so fuckin annoying, I don't know who at firaxis though tit was a good idea to have it happen constantly.

You know what this game needed? An enemy that can empty the guns of multiple of your characters at once, can teleport at will (which ignores Overwatch), can oneshot your characters from said teleport location, and gets multiple moves per turn.

I'm sure it'll be easier once my characters can survive the 7 crit shots this thing shits out, but until then I feel it's gonna be a pain.
