My 950 is apparently hemorrhaging data. 12 out of the last 17 days have used over .5 GB (I basically use my phone for internet/twitter/SMS/email only). I went to bed at 10:30 last night, and from 12:00 until the early morning I somehow used up 312 MBs. I've turned off photo syncing to OneDrive (though it never worked in the first place), and will have to leave my phone on airplane mode overnight now. This phone just gets better and better.

I am astonished at what a good little phone the 640 is for just $48. I really like Win10 mobile and I find myself hoping MS can get a toehold back into the market to challenge iOS and Android, just because I think it's a very good user experience. I think they may have missed their window (heh), though, and I'm not sure a Surface branded phone can rescue them. They probably need to attack the midrange market with phones that cost less that $300

But right now who is willing to spend that amount of money for a windows phone when they can get a top tier Android device. Unless you are a microsoft fan, I don't see someone that owned android flagships (or even iPhones), jumping into WP and risking it with a $500 or more phone. Hell, If I knew that they'd release a good phone with 2gb ram for 300€, I'm sure that I would have waited and get that instead of my 640XL because I know the platform and I like it, but unless something change, I'll go back to Android next year.

Not my area of expertise but why could they not have sold twice as many at half the price? Even with greater losses because *it's not as simple as that* at least there would be some 950s (or WPhones in general) in the wild. Even die-hards have little interest at this price, especially when obviously in beta (I'm sitting this one out, the 640 is a-OK for now). It does them no good to sell none, they're losing money and any good will or profile they may have had.

It is indeed a shame that it is more or less impossible to recommend WP to any savvy users at the moment (I think the low-end remains very convincing, but it is sort of iffy there too), I am however, luckily, finding myself more and more pleased with my 950, and with WM10 especially. Microsoft has again impressed with a good pace of bug-fix updates, and it is now working quite smoothly for me. Still way too expensive, and hard to recommend in that it isn't really objectively better than the competitors, but at least I didn't get forced to feel a real fool for buying one anyway.

Yeah i feel like an idiot buying a 950XL (not that the phone isn't great) just the face it feels like the phone has so much power in it but its never being used, the most intensive thing i use my phone for is GBA emulation, thats it. Not sure how often i am going to use continuum but i diffidently could see my 950xl getting a workout if VLC end up making a WPU for phone and i hope it would have x265 compatibility, i could definitely see the phone getting a workout from that. They need a midrange device not that the 640 is not excellent, but a mid range device that supports continuum ASAP. I've also heard nothing about islandwood for awhile now, i know they are testing but not much has been said.

So whenever that gets set up, then it will be put out.

I don't know if there's a reason it's not working right now on WinRT. But the goal is to get as many codecs as possible working. Especially since this is a UWP and you want that working beyond mobile (Xbox One, Hololens). I know one of the things they want to do is get DVD (and maybe Bluray) playback working, since I think UWP allows for access to those devices, which it was not before with 8.1. I know my dream, if I had time and energy to do it, is to get "mounting" DVDs or Blurays working in the app, so if you're on your phone or using it with continuum, you can watch full movies with menus back on it.

I've tried the WinRT VLC app and its still kinda buggy, it crashed for me as soon as i open it. I've also found out that the native video player inbuilt supports 1080p x265 and it seams to work without any issues and also has subtitle support, i was honestly surprised. I should be getting my continuum dock soon and i intend to test the phones ability to play 4k. When you say DVD playback do you mean like plug a USB DVD/bluray drive into an xbox/continum dock (no idea if that would even work) and play from that? xylo posted:This is a blessing in disguise. It should not be as bad now as it was. I don't do major work on it due to my day job, but I chip in when I can. What I mean is using the dvd or bluray drive in your computer (or mounting an image) and playing a movie with it. Just like how the desktop app works. So on phones, you can take an iso and watch a movie with it. In terms of x265, it may already have it. I have to check.

So what constitutes a good mid-range WP? Is there one that would be worth replacing a 640 with, or anything on the horizon? Right now it seems like the only choice is the 640 or 950 with no in between that isn't several years old already.

Yeah, I don't think the midrange is that well fleshed out at the moment. Likely better to try to wait until the W10M lineup is added to a bit, even with their new focus I have to imagine that there are a few more variants on the way.

The design looks nice, and from the first impressions I've seen people seem to think it's fine for what it is. The specs are mixed, with a bunch of ram but an okay SOC. And continuum only supports wireless, which means making sure you get the nice miracast system, because most I've tried (besides the ScreenBeam) just don't work well. But it does the job it says it does. And despite what they say, I still don't see how using continuum fits into business yet. Like, you still need to have a keyboard, mouse, miracast dongle, and monitor to make this setup work. So unless you happen to have this stuff around, it's still kinda pointless. I can see it as a good thin client though, especially since the remote desktop app is out, so if you go to work and plug that in, and then remote to another computer or use your phone as your only computer, maybe it would work better. And it should also be noted that even with all the new Windows Phones released in Japan this year (of which, they were all SIM free and not on a carrier), Windows Phone market share is still 0.0.

Definitely for thin clients, but some users just don't need anything more than email, web, and office by nature of their jobs. Another thing that's happening is a lot of LOB stuff is going web-based since users want to BYOD so a good browser is really all you need to do your work. Anyone who doesn't BYOD gets a continuum setup and you've got your workstation and corporate phone covered.

I've done a battery test on my 950xl, I get around 3:30 hours of heavy use before the battery is at 5%. This is no use of the battery saver mode. Heavy use for me is using the gba emulator. So mileage might vary. Next I am going to try videos with and with out the battery saver and the same with music streaming and then playing locally. Apparently new firmware and Redstone updates might be happening this month, so that could dramatically make the battery life better or even worse. Unlucky at&t 950/xl owners.

I don't have any one thing for me that sticks out app-wise, but it says 61% screen which seems odd since I have the brightness at 25% auto adjust (still plenty bright for me). omg th update process to WP10 preview is loving painful. First Windows Insider downloads everything onto the SD then throws a shitfit that there is no support for install-from-SD. Removed SD then another error about low phone storage so I hard reset, and now Windows Insider insists there's a connection problem maybe check your time settings, an error which dates back to Aug 2015. No loving around with restart and SD in/out, no restore. So now I'm back at square 1 waiting for all my poo poo to restore back to where it was. Lumia 640 Dual Sim. What am I doing wrong?
