I don't think you can ensure specific characters, but you can tell the game to only use people from the pool until they all die/get recruited by changing the line
code:
InitialSoldiersCharacterPoolSelectionMode=eCPSM_Mixed
to eCPSM_PoolOnly in the gamedata.ini file.

You could probably do that and only actually put a small number of people in your character pool. You can always import more after you've started.

Also not a big fan of mind control that early into the game - it's one thing when the enemy can deny you one member of a six person squad (which is what you should have had in EU by the time you stormed the alien base and met your first Sectoid Commander), it's another thing to get it in the third mission when you only have four three soldiers.

Insanity rolls a random effect on whatever it's cast on. I'm actually curious how often it's supposed to roll mind control though, since it seems to occur more than any of the other effects.

Do flashbangs break Sectoid mind control like they do reanimation? Might be worth having one in reserve in case of a bad MC roll.

They do.

I was assuming that the effect depended on the soldier's will.

Yeah, that moment where you just annihilate a group of wounded Advent dudes as they try to scatter to cover feels pretty drat nice in a way I haven't really felt since back in 2nd Edition Warhammer 40K on the ol' tabletop.

Beagle did it to get Bradford.

Export your pool.
Delete everyone in it.
Add only the people you want off the bat
Set that eCPSM_PoolOnly
Start game
Get dudes
Save, exit to menu
Import pool again
set that eCPSM_Mixed
play again

So I'm unable to tell what the best approach for ambushes is. Is it better to let them scramble into cover after the first shot, or put your mans on overwatch to hopefully murder them before they reach cover at the risk of immediately ending your turn if they survive? I thought I read that concealed overwatch doesn't have penalties like a normal overwatch.

Going by Beagle's videos, yeah, flashbangs completely halt psi abilities.

There's no penalties when coming out of concealment, correct. So you make sure everyone has a clear shot at the enemy, put them all into overwatch and have the last dude shoot/grenade them. It's the same as having the entire squad ambush and shoot at the same time with no penalties.

And yes, gently caress stun lancers.

Hilariously, this is where the so-called 'garbage' Blademaster skill really comes into its own. That extra two damage makes Slash (8-10 damage with the skill) a nearly-guaranteed kill against Sectoids in the early game. And that's just with the base machete before any potential upgrades.

After playing this for a bit, the default difficulty in 2 feels like it falls somewhere between Classic and Impossible on the first game. This game was definitely geared towards Beagle and you all who are super pro at the first game, and not to people like me that just had fun puttering around on the default difficulty in one; it kinda feels like the game is saying "gently caress you, casuals" as loudly and as often as it can. Oh well. It's too late to get a refund, I guess, so I'll try it when I'm feeling more bored and masochistic.

I'm at work now, just posting recollections of the night time Australian play session. So far the only thing I really don't like is that new events/things that need attention seem to pop up every few seconds. I wouldn't mind things being spaced a little better. Also how the gently caress do you assign scientists to things? Do they give a research bonus when they are "Available" or do I have to assign them to research?

Just put it on easy. No one else can see and we will only judge you if you admit it.

You could always play on Veteran or the lowest difficulty though if you're looking for the chillax ultra-casual experience. So far on Commander everything has been proceeding as expected, and when things gently caress up it tends to be my fault because I didn't check my flank or I stood next to a burning vehicle.

changed the ini a bit more. in addition to the previous weapon changes, now my gunslingers can carry rifles/smgs and my demolitionists can carry shotguns.

also ended up doing the ai changes, it's a lot better than the base game. the generic advent troops will try to stay about twice as far as they normally do and they value high cover a lot more, also they arent obligated to move into your crappy overwatch traps.

Came here to check if anyone else was having issues launching this game. Seems like no one is complaining about it so it must just be me :(

I get an error saying there isn't enough room on the servers or something stupid like that. I already thought it was a dumb idea buying a game I wasn't sure my PC could run well... if I can't even launch it I'm going to be upset. Guess I can finally try out this steam refund feature. drat I wish this game had been multi platform at launch. I would play the poo poo out of this on PS4.

Anyway, anyone else having this issue? I'm at work so I can't really do anything about it now.

I only ever beat XCOM on normal, and I'm doing OK so far on 2 on Veteran. To me, it seems like the game is balanced around failure being more acceptable - for instance, it's not really a huge deal to lose soldiers with little experience. Casualties happen. Stick it out, man!

Also, a lot of people have trouble with the second tutorial mission, if that was a problem for you. I had two full squad wipes before I completed it flawlessly, and nothing in the game has actually been that difficult since.

I asked last night, but it got passed over--is there a way to get Van Doorne? Bradford said something about how we were contacted by him, but "we don't need that kind of soldier." And I haven't seen any new missions show up.

Also, how do I get the Black Market? Again, Bradford mentioned that we were running out of supplies and that I should sell some things there, but I haven't seen it anywhere.

I am only a couple hours in, though, just to what seems like a story mission at the end of the first month. The Blacksite mission is also still locked for some reason. I feel like there's a layer to the strategic view that I'm just not getting.

So I never played the original X-COM (or the reboot that came out a couple years ago) but I did play Warhammer: Chaos Gate which had very similar gameplay (persistent soldiers, tactical gunplay, action points) and enjoyed it very much.

I was thinking of picking XCOM2 up but should I? Should I play the original first?

Yeah I feel like the "save the commander" mission was meant to drive this point home. You go into it with a full squad and an objective. In the end, your squad has been thrashed, but the mission is a success because the objective was completed. Everybody playing pre-release was hitting on this idea that, even more than XCOM 1, casualties are going to happen.

I may as well add shotgun gunslinger and rifle/smg demolitionist as well at this point. so that's every class can use every primary weapon except the sniper rifle and the cannon which remain unique to their respective classes. this homogenizes things quite a bit but it also adds a lot of fun options that wouldn't otherwise exist.
