Fabulousity posted:I still have that CD somewhere around here. Out of the 900+ levels only 30 or so weren't garbage or lazy object remaps of original Doom levels. I think they just blindly downloaded every file from ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames that ended in *.wad and tossed it on a CD. Haha, that sounds about right. I think we mainly used the audio WADs. "Silly Doom" was one that sticks in my mind. It just one guy re-voicing all the sound effects (ie. onomatopoetically). Back in the mid-90s (my high school dayz) creating Doom patches was the poo poo. My brother and couple of his friends created a version of Doom based on our school (complete with maps). RE: King's Quest I'd imagine, by then, Sierra was on the decline. Certainly a dramatic change in the tone. We never really finished KQ4. It's amazing what you miss in glorious Hercules monochrome. Ooh, a Perils of Rosella remake! drat, she looks better in that promo pic than in the demo. Gonzo the Eggman has a new favorite as of 06:50 on Feb 6, 2016 |

I worked in a building at MS that had the Exchange and Outlook teams. Back in 1994 or so the corporate email distribution tech was primitive. "Dad" resolved to Desktop Applications Division. One time a group of contractors had a social email thread going and someone send a mail about a coworkers hairy rear end and jokingly put "(Person's) Dad" in the cc line. It went out to everyone in the division including the VP.

I could also tell the story about a guy falling for a coworker, getting shot down, then logging onto her PC and sending an email pretending to be her to all of her contacts and executive management as well. Like VP level. It's amazing to me now that we were a bunch of 20 somethings in our first real jobs and making decisions that involved hundreds of millions of dollars in sales and millions of users. When I got assigned to work with the Outlook team it was I think 10 of us - 3 program managers, 4 programmers, a GM, a marketing person, and me. Software development is so planned and streamlined now which is good but not as much fun.

I remember setting my resolution too high that my monitor completely flaked out and my display looked like someone raked through a wet Jackson Pollack work. I had to call my friend who had a near identical setup to mine, icon-wise ("hit right five times to get to 'Display') and he walked me through how to set it back to good ol' 800x600. Nowadays, I always, ALWAYS appreciate those timers that say they'll set everything back unless you hit OK within the time limit.

Has there been a boss/panic button mention yet? Not those stupid stick on keyboard keys that were a gag in the 90s, but the programmed in function key that would pop up a static image of a spread sheet so your boss totally wouldn't think you were loving off at work? It was a wild time before alt tabbing windows was a thing!

In my experience, it usually showed a non-functional DOS-prompt. Playing games as a little kid I didn't understand what the point of that was.

I remember there was one...was it Space Quest? If you loaded the boss key it, yeah, it looked like a spreadsheet but when you tried to get back to the game, the game would admonish you for playing a game when you should be working and kicked you to the DOS prompt. I think it was Commander Keen, not sure which of the half a dozen iterations. I've also seen other games with the white-on-blue Wordperfect 5.1 screen. I got DOS and WordPerfect 5.1 in Computer Class at school. Not because I'm that old, but also because our school was cheap.

Leather Goddesses of Phobos also had a boss key command. It put up a mock screen of Cornerstone, the database application which was the only non-game that Infocom ever published, and which also ended up ruining them.

This was my first step into RPG-like games, and I played it for so many hours, I could still find my way around if I had to. I also remember 1 or 2 major plot points where the game would ALWAYS freeze. One of them was some sort of earthquake going on, and after 10 minutes of watching the screen shake, I would give up and reboot only to try again. But I absolutely loved this game. edit: Ultima VIII by the way

See, back in the early 90's I had really wanted to play Ultima 7 (either one), but my wimpy 286 couldn't handle anything more than Ultima 6. By the time I finally got an upgrade (486DX2 66MHz!), Ultima 8 was out - so I figured I'd play that instead. It was nothing like previous Ultima experiences. It was quite disappointing on a few levels in that regard. When taken as a standalone game though, it was pretty good. The platform jumping was bullshit and so were the stupid puddles you'd drown in (basically any surface of water, no matter how small, would insta-kill you if stepped on). It was an okay game. I still have it sitting around on a CD somewhere, always thinking I'll play it one day. Did anyone play Ultima 9? What a shameful end to the series. I still played it. My favorite Ultimas were definitely Underworld 1 & 2.

The thing that drove me crazy was when jumping, if there was anything on the surface you were landing on, anything at all, you risked sliding on it and falling off the platform altogether. Usually to your death.
