I'm sure this game is well balanced, so I'm doing something wrong.

Rangers are complete poo poo. Why on earth would I ever want to run up to an rear end in a top hat where I end up out of cover and ALSO can swing and miss with the sword? If I'm at that close of range, the shotgun will do more damage and be less likely to miss.

The only thing I've found them good for is concealment/shadowstep and having them act as spotters for my snipers.

Shotgun rangers absolutely murder things.

First, there's the Abilities:
-Phantom: Gives you concealment on all missions, letting you scout as needed, which is really valuable
-Shadowstep: When not in concealment, you can now avoid overwatch fire forever (Shadowstrike is trash, don't take it)
-Run and Gun: Get into a flank and murder the poo poo out of something
-Implacable: While Bladestorm is fun, Implacable lets you keep the murder train rolling or get back into cover if you overextend
-Untouchable: Murder things, don't get murdered in return
-Rapid Fire: Murder things even faster every turn

At the GTS, get Hunter's Instinct, which gives your rangers +3 to damage vs. flanked targets.

Then you worry about the gear:

-When getting gun parts on the battlefield or at the black market, be on the lookout for any laser sight you can find (not scopes). Shotguns already gain a sizeable aim bonus for close range, laser sights provide a critical chance bonus that increases at close range, basically tripling at point blank. For your other weapon mods think about expanding your ammo capacity or giving yourself some free reloads
-Experimental Ammo at the proving grounds can give you Talon Rounds, which provide +20% crit chance and +1 crit damage. Put them on your shotgun ranger
-Spider Suits (and the upgraded Wraith Suits at tier 3) give a mobility bonus and a free action grappling hook that can help you move into a better flanking/high ground position
-If you get PCS chips, mobility is probably the best bonus you can put on your ranger, though aim, health and dodge can be nice as well

Putting it all together and you take your high-mobility ranger and flank a target for the +50% crit chance, which stacks with the base crit chance from the shotgun, bonus crit chance from the talon rounds and close range boosted crit chance from the laser sight for 100% crits guaranteed. You take the base weapon damage, add +3 from Hunter's Instinct and then the bonus damage on top of that from critical hits and talon rounds. You can get 20 damage critical hits with tier 3 weapons, and with rapid fire you can do it twice per turn. Nothing in the game can take that kind of damage assuming you hit (and with the aim bonus from a close range shotgun that's a pretty good chance). Having murdered an opponent you can activate Implacable to either run to cover or start approaching your next target, while Untouchable will block the next attack someone makes on you regardless of what it is. You now have a soldier that can provide premium scouting intel while also allowing you to go loud and just murder dudes.

I didn't blow it up or anything dumb like that, it was just gone.

Totally rage quit the fourth time it happened.

I've seen this a few times with terrain that was destroyed but failed to "unload". I've yet to be screwed over by it, but sometimes there's a tree stump or wall that is there visually but doesn't actually exist according to the tactical information.

My favorite was a heavy armored vehicle that just went intangible when it exploded. It took me a bit to figure out why my soldiers could see and shoot a flanked enemy through the burned out hulk. It got even better when a reinforcement dropship landed and tossed a few new dudes down in the middle of the vehicle, watching a Captain and his trooper walking in and out of a heavy armored vehicle.

So an explosion blew up an area with a bunch of corpses in, seemingly causing a ragdoll glitch that prevents the aliens turn from ending, welp.

At least this cemented my choice of not bothering to even try Ironman until they clean some of this stuff up.

Edit: The reason I think it's a ragdoll glitch is because of the distinct "corpse stuck in ground" sound, so familiar from UE and Source games, playing constantly.

Density and stats really as far as I can tell. The higher you go, the more aliens you fight, the faster they "level up" to meaner aliens, the more accurate they'll have and the more health/armor they'll have.

So for reference: at level 2/4 basic Troopers will have 3 HP. At 3/4 they'll start with 4 HP.

This game can really gently caress you with a roll of the dice by never providing an opportunity to get engineers. I started a new campaign on Commander and I'm a month and a half in and haven't seen an Engineer. I still only have one spot in my base excavated which has my GTS, so I have no Resistance Comms and can't actually progress on the map screen. I rushed Mag weapon research but can't build them because that requires two engineers. All I can do is stay at HQ and scan for intel while working through all the missions that pop up and hoping that 1-2 of them give me Engineers before the end of the month, because I won't be able to keep up if we hit Month 3 and I'm still hamstrung like this.

You probably won't end up using your rifle much, and Return Fire works on psionic attacks too. If they hit you with a Psi panic you'll still take the Return Fire after your panic action, it's pretty sweet.

I think you need to establish comms with a friendly country before it unlocks, which I haven't done because not having an engineer has prevented me from excavating a room and building Resistance Comms. I guess the real lesson is that Resistance Comms should always be the very first thing you build, but even so I imagine it would be possible to also not roll Engineers in the Black Market.

I don't really see the point of scientists being as expensive as engineers. I've been out of research projects for about a month of in-game time at this point, and there's nothing else to use them on.

Also, my "Rain of Bullets" Sniper with the Spider Suit owns. I can grapple up somewhere, move to cover, then shoot (Rain of Bullets only costs one action point, probably because it's not a native sharpshooter ability), with a 100% hit chance, and then, if I get a kill, I get an extra action point I can use to reload my gun.
