You only skulljack 2-3 times on plot targets, but you can develop skullmining in the PG which you can use on all advent for extra intel.

So, I was saying that it'd be nice if there was a Strip Weapons button along with Items and Armor. Seems someone agrees - it's already a mod.

People are already doing stuff with XCom 2 mods that took years to crack in the original. Can't wait to see how the scene develops over the next year or three.

Loving the game, man is it intense. It's roughing me up more than the last one, pretty tough. I'm around April 18th 2035 at the moment, haven't had much breathing room to buy more than a few recruits, and things to get more for free haven't been popping up much.

I only have 9 soldiers at the moment, two injured, five are rookies. 11 dead so far. I have 31 supplies, income of 115. Only big things I've bought are the Guerrilla school to get a bigger squad recently and the proving ground for the skulljack mission (had to run from the first one of those situations). Still 0 armor for everybody, all starting weapons etc.

Any advice on the money management side, and how many soldiers you think you need to have around?

You can recruit new ones instantly, so as many as you need to field a full squad. Having 10 or so for the eventual base defense isn't the worst thing, though.

Edit: Also, at some point doubling up on classes so you can always field a decent team is of course going to be the thing to do, but it doesn't seem like you're anywhere close to that yet.

Having a lot of fun with this game so far, even if I did run into a few really frustrating missions. I had a "hack enemy computer" mission with a 6-turn timer, and the enemy spawn was seven sectoids and a codex, which is just total bullshit. It might not have been so bad if I'd had a full 6-man squad, but I was waiting for the school to finish building because I hosed up my build order.

My only real gripe is that the upgraded armors still look like rear end. The starting armor has a lot of character and better customization options, once you get Warden armor everyone looks like they're wearing identical spandex bodysuits and none of the headgear / props even remotely look good with them. I'd be all over a mod that lets you choose which armor look you want without having to sacrifice defense.

Well ain't that precious?

Whelp, the random map generator made a mission that is impossible to finish unless I sacrificed a soldier, and even then I would need to reload the map to pull it off.

In order to get to the objective, I had to dash all the way there, and I was just barely able to make it in time. All of these enemies activated when I secured the objective.

Looking in the weapon files, it looks like there's just stats for the two grenade launchers, so I'm going to assume there just isn't a tier 3 one, which is kind of weird, but whatevs.

Edit: Also really wish Advent would drop Elerium Cores. I mean, the other loot is real good too, but I need cores to feed my proving ground addiction.

I only have enough supplies to buy one rookie at the moment, so just feels like one tough month could destroy me, if I spent too much of my income on something fancy etc.

By the time I hit those, I was so far down the failure spiral that I simply could not beat them. Rookies would panic after one scratch/death, and that was that.

I had to abort two long, drawn out, painfully nail biting missions because sectopods at the end were unkillable by the tattered remnants of my force.

I've managed to hang on to this game by my fingertip's fingertips, but I think I should have restarted like two hours ago with what I know now about ignoring whiners on the strategic map and cherry picking missions. Full squad wipes aren't acceptable, too much lost xp and resources in gear.

This game absolutely has a difficulty hump just like the first one. Sectopods, Archons (or whatever), Andromedans are all nothing compared to having 4 rookies in your squad, poo poo guns, 1 grenade each and 3-4 health bars against sectoids, officers and advent troopers.

There's a little bit of ambiguity about their actual end game, but the Avatar Project seems to be the ethereal's attempt at curing a degenerative tissue issue their bodies have. Humans have really good psionic potential and sturdy bodies, so the idea seems to be genetically engineering incredibly powerful psionic humans by merging ethereal and human DNA, and then putting their consciousness inside the thing. You fight some in the late stages of the game, but they're unfinished ones brought out to stop XCOM. The presumption is that a complete Avatar would be far too powerful to stop, hence the game over. Also, there's apparently a Big Jaws to the ethereal's Jaws, but that seemed more like xpac or sequal tie in stuff.

True, but on the other hand you get even more powerful in the end game than in EW.

I've just been pissing Intel away whenever I've seen something remotely interesting to get with it, since it comes up as a Guerrilla Ops reward often if not always and you can always make more by just hanging out at HQ if you really need some to make contact with a region.

Just found my first Sectopod... by hacking a tower and taking control of it. These things are way less threatening when I can march them to my squad and make them stay there and take it.

Should I get a cutscene or research project or something after killing the first one? It didn't drop anything, and I'm worried that killing it while hacked has broken something.

Should have a wreck to autopsy after the mission. My first Sectopod was behind a house. I found it with my concealed scout, then shot it in the face with my sniper from across the map. Sectopod proceeded to walk through the house to engage my troops on the other side. They're a lot more intimading looking than the first game. And noisy as hell. You'll know there's one on the map well before you see it.

I'm pretty sure I won't be as lucky next time, so no big deal. I had the same "problem" by managing to hack the first turret I saw, and it wasn't until the second one that I got the wreckage.

They're also way less dangerous when someone with a Repeater executes one the moment it activates. Had that on my Forge mission: "Oh god the Sectopod's active...wait what's this 'meat over metal' achivement that popped up?" My only soldier who was on overwatch was my Specialist who got the skill to auto-overwatch whenever he ends his turn without taking an offensive action, and he mega-critted the damned thing. :v:

Speaking of Sectopods, Advent workstations are surprisingly resistant to being stepped on:

At least I'd call that resistant.

Also that mission I had me blow up three Advent soldiers with Fuse. Fuse is the most goddamned hilarious ability in the game. :allears:

It's a little weird there's no third grenade launcher, but the second one is so insanely broken that a third tier would just involve your grenadiers sitting on lawn chairs on the Avenger's top deck and launching thermonuclear warheads at Advent bases.

Also, how rough on PCs is this game? That's one thing I was reading was that it ran a little rough. My rig isn't OLD, but I'm running a GeForce 660TI, 8 gigs of RAM, and an i5-4670k @ 3.4GHz.

It's not a desire for no metagame, it's just for one that isn't as stressful. The Geoscape gives you no breathing room whatsoever for letting time pass to just collect resources or do anything without almost certainly getting interrupted by some mission or other. Which you can't say no to without facing major setbacks in one form or other that makes it even more stressful. Not to mention that most or all of your best guys are still wounded from the last time a mission came up, so now you're stuck in a cycle of trying to eke out a single team of healthy soldiers to go poke an Advent Facility because the counter just slapped on yet another two tiles while you were stuck playing catch-up.

XCOM let you blow off the occasional mission without any real consequences for a decent while just so you could let your wounded recover and actually research/build stuff in relative peace.

This seems so alien to me because it is like the exact opposite of my experience between the two games. The first geoscape was extremely stressful and luck-based. You basically had to go satellite rushing and also hope that you could get enough engineers in time, and managing panic was basically where 90% of your resources were going for the first two months, while also hoping you rolled well on the excavation or steam vents, because otherwise goodbye huge chunk of credits. Blowing off an abduction raised panic in 6 different countries. Blowing off a terror mission was permanent and irrevocable damage.

This is absolutely not the case here. Guerrilla ops are, yeah choose which two bad things you want to hit you, but most of those go away after a month, and you know what those things will be ahead of time so you can plan for them. You can blow off a retaliation mission and lose that country, but then you can always get them back, only a little worse for wear. Hell, having an estimated timer to the next retaliation mission is such a key piece of help in terms of your planning. The black site is always near your start, so you always have a safety valve if you are nearing the end of the countdown timer.

yeah, I'd hate to see the area a level three grenade launcher's gas grenade would cover. Would be a great way to gently caress your team over by putting a hilariously big cloud of lingering Snaketit gas between you and your timed target. :v: The cloud would probably be big enough to accidentally trigger unseen pods.

It really depends on the computer. My rig's pretty old (runs on minimal settings besides the textures I turned up) and it runs smooth as a dream besides 2-3 minute load times when entering/exiting a mission. When it runs, it runs amazingly well, the problem is the game's so bug ridden that you're rolling the dice on if the game hates your machine or not right now.
