Ran into a fun bug, stun trooper zaps a soldier, KOs them. Archon fires off pinons and my KOed guy is in the crossfire. I have another guy pick them up and haul them to safety, pinions land, injure the unconscious guy 20 feet away. Uh, OK then.

Didn't have a medkit, so I dropped the skyranger flare right on top of her and she'll be spending a bit of time in sickbay, instead of poisoned and dead on the field, though. Small favors.

Man, I've got a weird bug. One of my soldiers has stopped animating for this mission. He just teleports around the map when I move him and when he attacks the game just hangs for as long as it would take for the attack to play out and then the game resumes showing the results of the attack.

So the once a mission limit is per operative, not per team? If so, that's hilarious. I'm just going into my Avenger defence and I am rolling both my psi ops for the first time.

That's only for Domination, which only works once/mission. You can cast it every time it's off cooldown, but you only get one success a mission and then you're not allowed to cast it again.

Insanity also has a chance of inflicting mind control, which lasts for 1-2 turns, and Void Rift has a chance of causing anyone in it to be hit by Insanity (in addition to the Rift's normal attack)

I think it's pretty hopeless to be honest, I mean I can more than understand if you want the weekend off after putting out a game. I just hope that there is something in the works for later on in the week.

Harsh judgements are for the people who say a thing is bad design just because they dislike it, or that it should have been what they wanted in the first place. Especially when they're dumb about their criticism and don't think about why the design decisions were made, and what consequences their alternative will have.

TBF in EU/EW winning missions was really important. Panic was ticking up all the time, and the difference between winning and losing was a big swing. The number of missions you could back out of and not lose a bunch of countries was pretty small. But also in xcom 1 the objectives were mostly the simple "kill all aliens" and there were few circumstances where there was a choice between losing soldiers and losing the mission. The only reason to bug out on an abduction or terror mission was because two of your guys were already dead and you wanted to prevent a squad wipe.

Yeah but if I don't get a head start I end up completely surrounded and fighting half the map before I get close to the objective. Even if I can then complete the objective I'm going to die trying to fight everything off, I can't get there without tripping the alarm and if I start to fight anything I run out of time. Am I supposed to aggro the entire map, run to the objective, then run away and try to fight them off or something?

Do you ever get SHIVs in this game? I really miss having something you can just throw out in the open that doesn't need cover because it's so durable and/or can repair itself.

MEC with body shields were decent enough in the early game, and later on a hover plasma alloy SHIV with suppression was like the perfect point man.

No, use concealment to set up an overwatch trap to take out a pod of enemies. Usually it's best to do this for the first pod you see so you don't get surrounded later. After that keep heading for the objective dealing with enemies as necessary. If you are cutting it close send a single person for the objective while your squad deals with the enemies, just don't overextend yourself. Specialists can hack many objectives from range as well.

Edit: Also grenades are your friend.

Commander, because EU had a kind of lovely difficulty curve whereby it got easier as the game went on.

I haven't got a specialist because one of my rookies got shot first mission. That would make things easier. I rerolled the mission and got one to blow something up which would also be much easier because I assume I can do that from range with a grenade launcher.

I'm trying shooting the first pod, so far killed them in one turn, I was under the impression I was supposed to be relying on concealment more to get around the place.

To add to this, Specialists can hack at a pretty sizeable range but not through walls. They need some degree of LoS.

Soooo blow up the wall if you need to, then hack from a mile away.

Probably my first advice to anyone who is having trouble right away is to turn the difficulty down. Normal is a lot harder than EU/EW, and the game is absolutely right that Commander is for people that already know how X-Com 2 expects you to be playing.

Nope, concealment is for ambushes. It's only used for sneaking on rangers that are speced for it. Using it to sneak around your entire squad is a really great way to get destroyed.

I looked at the mod and figured out how to add cosmetic options to armours so I was thinking of making a mod that just allows you to use any cosmetic option with any armour, but I have no clue how to actually go about publishing something on the workshop.

I have no clue about weapons though; I don't think it's possible to modify their looks through the ini so someone's probably going to have to use the mod tools for that. Someone who actually knows what they're doing feel free to correct me though!

As long as you keep a good range of classes the timed mission thing is fairly fun and breaks up the standard "Overwatch till things die" style.
You can tell if a mission will be timed before you start it so just adjust your team to fit with it.
Don't take Snipers on recovery missions, take Sword Rangers and Grenadiers, always move ahead at least your max blue move and then blow up whatever gets in your way. Always bring a Specialist with a Skulljack on timed missions, the hacking options from the watch posts are insanely overpowered. I have seen "Refund all your squad's AP" a fair bit.
Outside of that abuse Mimic Beacon to get a full dash turn if you need to get to the objective right away.
If you can bring a Rocket Launcher with you on timed missions, it is the best heavy weapon for opening paths for LoS/escaping.

You really have to think about who you want to bring along, have at least 2-3 teams worth of guys ready to go at all times to fit around mission type. You can't just do the EU/EW style of bring 1/2 of each class.

Yeah, neutralizing a pod should take no more than 2 or 3 turns, otherwise you screwed up somewhere. Since usually you deal with two pods before reaching the objective and the first one should be taken out by an ambush, the time limits seem tight but doable in most cases.

The big thing is that you should not take more than two turns before engaging the first pod. Concealment gives you a lot of leeway to move forward.

Edit: Battle Scanners and Scanning Protocol are really useful

If one of the objectives is "defeat all aliens" and you don't finish it, then you won't successfully complete the mission. Other escort type missions have designated evacuation points you need to get to - summoning EVAC is strictly for bugging out.

To the other people who downloaded Strip Weapon Button mod and are having the Avenger loading issue, you can temporary fix it/disable it by downloading something like finland mod or armor customization, and copying the .XcomMod to X:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\workshop\content\268500\618504171 and naming it the same as the existing xcommod file. This is super dirty so don't do this with any mods that actually make gameplay changes or you'll gently caress your save file.

Really thinking about it I think the game is a little to forgiving on most the timed/recovery missions. I have yet to really feel pressured during them outside of the RNG "That's X-Com" insta kills.
It'd be nice if there was some kind of Sniper type ADVENT that used Squad Sight/Scanning Towers and you had to search for him while it put some pressure on you from range. That way you can't just Wombo-Combo your first pod and take off from there.
Guess I will download the mod tools and see what I can do with them.

3rd street for life
I've been playing almost solid since the game came out (just on veteran) and I'm about to beat the game after taking much too long in an effort to max everything out.

I weirdly didn't build the PSI OPs lab until WAY late in the campaign, so I basically played the whole game without them, and now I wish I had built it sooner because they are amazing.

Having said that, I think you could EASILY beat the game with nothing but Grenadiers. Explosives are amazing, and the grenadiers they actually get better as the game goes on and you need to shred more and more armor. I generally run 2 of them all the time, but I just tried a mission with 3 colonels (2 mainly explosives and 1 w/ holo targeting, etc.) and it was amazing the destruction I could rain down.

I think if you wanted to be the most ridiculously overpowered party possible you could just run 5 Grenadiers and 1 Ranger (for scouting so you can determine where to throw the explosives).

Also, on the avatar project pips, you can completely ignore them and keep doing objectives basically forever. It will eventually start a 20ish day countdown when the meter fills up, but if you then take out a facility (assuming you have uncovered the location) it removes the timer and some pips. I've been running with the project status a few pips from maxed out for most of the game with minimal ill effects.
