A couple times a year I happen to get one of these calls when I'm doing the dishes or whatever that doesn't require my full attention and I'll gently caress with the callers. For cruise offers and the likes I'll do my best to burn an hour of the caller's time with fake data and dummy card numbers and with tech support scams I'll spin up a Linux VM just to watch them get increasingly frustrated when they display a complete lack of knowledge.

But aside from that, the point is to waste the time of the companies, who nobody wants to hear from in the first place and who have often been told before not to call in the second. If that means making someone's poo poo job a bit shittier, so be it. At least they get paid either way (I hope).

How hard is it to just say, "Sorry I'm not interested. Goodbye." Or not pick up unknown numbers. I know a couple who still have a landline and they get this poo poo every single day because Australia's do not call list is a joke. Apparently most of the numbers are either unlisted or overseas, so they just don't answer those calls.

People who do calls like that get hosed if a call wastes their time and doesn't end in a sale. You're not sending any kind of message any higher up than potentially that caller's supervisor, who is also a wage slave. E: I yelled at a receptionist for an hour until she cried. She missed three calls and now she has to go to a meeting to discuss her efficiency. Take that, Microsoft! Somfin has a new favorite as of 09:51 on Feb 8, 2016 |

We used to get a call from MS tech support every few days about the virus on our computer that they have detected and want to help us with. After my wife would berate the scammer by telling them repeatedly that they were a shame on their family they actually gave up after a few months. gently caress those assholes, I can't imagine how many confused elderly people fall for that poo poo and get scammed. Back in the day I got a desperate job as a telemarketer selling "carpet cleaning appointments" (really trying to get people to buy overpriced vacuum cleaners). It was soul crushing and humiliating and paid $6 an hour plus commission, which I got once the entire time I worked there. They were always finding some reason to not pay commissions. But at the time it was either be a telemarketer or have no money for the child I was raising. So telemarketing won. I don't have the heart to gently caress with people who do that for a living, they have enough problems already. I guess schadenfreude is on me for being a poor?

Although when I talk to telemarketers they are are making 6 figures, have happy lives and have no problems bothering 100s of people a day. The MS scams, the credit card scams, the ones where they are fishing for bank account info or whatever, these people make bank if they can convince you to fall for it. Of course there are levels. The MS one in particular you can tell there are closers, which they call supervisors or level 2 or whatever. If you seem to want to work with them they will definitely pass you along.

I don't care about most telemarketers, but I will ABSOLUTELY gently caress with the criminal ones. Calling and misrepresent your company (you are not from Microsoft), or that I have a virus (I haven't turned on my desktop in months), you are engaging in criminal behaviour and while I can't get you arrested, I can save someone else.
