I've also found the ship extremely squishy compared to my old Tholian Recluse, here's what I've slotted for BoFF Skills:

Tac Slot 1: Tac Team & FAW2
Tac Slot 2: Tac Team & APB
Eng Slot 1: EPtS, Eng Team2, and EPtWIII
Science 1: Small Hull Heal, Extend Shields, Tykons Rift, and Gravity Well
Science 2 : I have no loving clue what to put here.

What do you think?
Really? Its layout and stats aren't really all that different from the Recluse, even the same shield mod and almost the same health. I admit I cheated a bit by using the Quas trait so shield heals can double as hull heals and the Vonph trait so basically everything's on the GCD since I'm an engineer and never going under 80% hull, but the former isn't really necessary and reciprocity/AHOD get you the same idea for a lot cheaper. But here's what I was messing with...

TT1/ FAW2
Kemocite 1/APB2
EPTW1/A2Damp1/Override Subsystem Safeties 3
HE1/TSS2/Tyken's 2/GW3
Science Team 1/TBR1

I used Aux to dampeners because I hate flying ships with lovely turn rates there's a doff for it that basically makes it a permanent buff with sizable energy resists. OSS is in there because it's absurdly good, but you can swap it for some Intel crowd control thing or reverse shield polarity or whatever if you really want. Otherwise there's nothing that fancy here... you'd probably want to swap the engy seating for ET1/EPTW2/OSS3 or the like, and since you probably don't have kemocite you'll likely want a second copy of FAW to make sure it's always up whenever possible. There's better DPS focused build, but it's a carrier so it ain't loving topping charts there anyway and this way it was a basically invincible and surprisingly mobile science rear end in a top hat.

Truth be told, the solutions I've suggested are:
  • Have a queue in mind that you want to do, scan your first particle, use the fleet starbase (or other appropriate) transwarp to get to your second particle, scan the second, do the queue, and by the time that's done, your transwarp will be cooled down in order to get to your third particle.
  • You could use the transwarp cooldown doff with one of those transwarp cooldown singularity/warp cores, if you feel like messing with your equipment/doffs.
  • Well Travelled, the (misspelled) bonus trait you get by beginning the mission “Tour the Galaxy” and visiting at least 8 sector blocks within the 15 minute timer, reduces your cooldown by another 20%.
  • If you're a non-Romulan Federation officer, the T5 Excelsior has a few extra transwarp locations. If you're Federation-aligned, the T3 Excelsior's console, which can be slotted onto other ships, also reduces cooldown (50%).
Sector space is all unified and stuff now. Just point it towards the place you need to go for the daily and alt-tab and do something actually fun for five minutes while you trundle across the galaxy. Save the transwarp for when you get stuck with Bajor have to hop quandrants. :effort:

10 minutes tops. Seriously it's really not that bad. It takes about a minute to go from Sol to DS9 now.

Fighters are nice, tetryon set is good now since you can go full beams with the omni-array. The console is also pretty decent.

Nah, it's pretty crappy these days. The web mine is still probably the most useful mine but that doesn't say much. The shield set is really underrated, but it (and every other set really) was obsoleted by the Iconian equipment, so eh.

Eh, it's still obnoxious dealing with a bunch of pointless zone transitions, especially when the quest gives you a lot of ground objectives. But yeah it's not that bad and you do at least get that 400 mark head start unlike the other events.

The Nukara shield was crap when it came out but was later buffed to "ok".

It has visuals that you either love or loathe so play space barbie accordingly.

I'm sure someone will correct me if this has changed but the current endgame "best" gear is basically the 4/4 iconian space set. You hardly need it though so don't worry about it if that's not your thing.

The Nukara shield does have the advantage of not being specialized against any particular kind of energy, so it's useable against any opponent.

Any shield is usable against any opponent because this is STO and none of that math works the way you think it does. If you want the best, use Iconian. If you want to space barbie, use whatever you want and be slightly less optimized. That is literally the only meaningful duality in the game.

The Nukara 2-piece bonus often gets ignored since it's "only" a +2.5% boost... except this is Cryptic math at work, and it's a high-category buff that's actually worth the listed amount rather than the fractional amount most energy boosts give. It also applies to any and all types at once, rather than a single energy type. Or in other words,

Psycho Landlord posted:

Nukara 2p and the Romulan engines was a really good combo... just... well, as noted before the Iconian set obsoletes everything. The Deflector is tankier (and gets SciCmdr at UR), the shield has better gimmicks (and is also Resilient like the Nukara shield), and the 3-piece bonus is not only higher even with cryptic math but it's team wide. :downs:

I think 3p Iconian with the Romulan engines is in the lead if you're a tac character, but yeah. And obviously the core needs to be upgraded to UR for the AMP mod, otherwise you're better off using something else there that has it.

You're right, for tac captains the bonus to attack patterns from the romulan engines is better than the iconian 4-piece.

But this is only stuff you need if you're chasing high dps for e-peen. The missions are designed to be completed by pubbies with the worst random equipment they can find and whatever dumb skills their boffs came with at the start.

Buy the shield that you want any of the set boners with. Other than that it doesn't matter because a fair number of us are just hull tanking these days.

Yeah it doesn't change the fact that torpedoes are loving obnoxious to use on cruisers due to the firing arc problem, not to mention the fact you probably won't have any skills/gear dedicated to boosting them. Cryptic keeps dancing around the issue while never making the obvious easy solution.

Would probably be a great trait on an escort though. :effort:

The Odyssey at the top of the blog is a different design then the one at the bottom of the Blog.

All variants also have different names, which leads me to believe all 3 variants have different parts.

Thomas posted the Badges he made for all 3 Fed variants, confirms they have separate designs. He was also the one who modelled them.

Designwise: the Bort's lost all of its grandeur, at least the Scim looks like a romulan ship now, and the Oddy looks like at least it'll have some parts that might mix well with the T5 parts to fix visual issues and create a nice overall design.

I'd have to see numbers, but depending on the buff, people blessed with wide-angle torps might benefit from trying them out. Course, this is a moot point, because if that trait is good, people will just grind out the trait and then put it on a better ship.

Cryptic doesn't care if you do that, because you still had to buy the ship to use the trait. As for a better ship, at least on the Rom side the DPS chasers are still rocking scimitars, Cryptic would have to try pretty hard to make a T6 scim worse.
