So, how are you guys feeling about hacking on the whole?

I like specialists as a class, but hacking anything other than mission objectives feels unbelievably off to me in terms of risk/reward. Some of the rewards are great, but the penalty for failure always feels objectively worse. Like, sure, getting all of my AP back would be great, but at best it's going to turn the tide of the current fight that I'm involved in. Meanwhile, failing and having reinforcements drop on my head while also having my specialist waste their action could very well lose me in the mission on the whole. Giving a permanent buff to all enemies on the map is pretty brutal in early/mid-game too.

I might just be missing something, but it seems like hacking is almost universally a choice between a temporary buff for your squad/hacker vs. a permanent buff for all aliens on the map (or some other equally devastating penalty). The only time I've ever bothered to hack so far is when I'm looking for a hail mary move on a mission that's going to poo poo anyway, because otherwise there's just always something better and more useful for the specialist to be doing.

I feel like hacking suffers from what most of this game has too much of, way too much RNG. First there is RNG with actually hitting the mark, that's fine, but then there is also RNG with getting the 20+ tech boosts in RNG drops. XCOM2 is a really good game, but sometimes all the new extra RNG makes it feel too luckbased.

Are crits broken in this game? I finished my first playthrough yesterday, and outside of when my guys used Rupture (which guarantees a crit) none of my guys got a single crit the entire game. My ranger even had 70+% crit one mission due to buffs and not a single attack was critical (and I made her attack a lot). Plenty of crits on my guys from the aliens though, but not one, not a single one by my guys. Even that 5% instant kill weapon mod triggered multiple times during the game, and the 15% quite a few times, but no (non-Rupture) crits at all.

Actually I think one of my grenades critted once after getting the upgrade that let them, but that's it.

*Edit*

Actually, now that I think about it it was probably because I was cheating and had my frontliners aim cranked up. I'm guessing it's using a table where stuff either hits, crits, or misses, as opposed to checking for crits after scoring the hit. Well, that's what I get then :v:

Why not one of both? I love my sniper(nothing quite like putting killing field up on a group of guys while you are concealed), but gunslinger seems quite powerful in its own right.

Had to send a team of 5 rookies after a "BUT THOU MUST" mission afterwards. Rookies are not..great for handling codex fellows.

The UFO mission is a bad idea on top of XCOM2's other stuff (not on its own merits), because all it means is even more of your guys will be stuck in recovery for weeks than usual.

I'd get Proving Grounds early because Experimental Gear is 5 days a core but it is all awesome, especially Tracer Rounds and Incendary Grenades.

There is a continent bonus that makes this instant, so eventually you're going to be limited only by Elerium Cores. A good upgrade will make some missions much easier, though, so by prioritizing other things you're going to make the early game harder.

Well, that was an anticlimactic ending to my current commander ironman campaign. Lost my entire A-team to a group of two stun lancers and a snake that dodged 7 shots in a row(flanking, 70-75% is as good as you'll get early in a commander campaign), and proceeded to knock 2 people unconscious and grab the third in the same round.

Aren't the bonues random each game? I didn't get that one. I got one that decreases proving grounds costs by 50% which is pretty worthless since they are cheap anyway.

My main gripe with hacking is that it takes so long relative to how much actually happens. First you get to watch your Gremlin sloooowly float over to the target, then you get a few seconds of animation for the perspective to switch. Then you get to make one choice and click go, only to be treated to another slower-than-necessary animation for your RNG result. Then the game takes a while to show you the result that you just rolled, and then you're treated to another shot of the Gremlin sloowly floating back. All in all you're sitting there for probably 10-15 seconds all to make a single choice and a dice roll.

Hell, the game as a whole is much too fond of locking your camera on things. A reinforcement beacon drops in, the camera zooms over there while one of your soldiers says "enemy reinforcements coming in", and then the camera locks on it again while Central helpfully lets you know that there are in fact reinforcements coming in. These are all things that may be very helpful the first few times when you still get used to everything, but start to become hella annoying after the tenth+ time you saw them.

I installed it, but you have to train your soldiers in leadership abilities and this takes like two weeks. Unlike with PSI training you can't take them out of it and use them on missions, so i kinda stopped doing it before i got to any skills that seemed good.

They are nice if you are rushing objectives or you want a guy that can run in, drop the bomb, and run out for evac.
I got a Specialist who ended up rolling Run & Gun so I dropped a SMG and a +3 Movement PCS on him. Can book it to an objective in 2 turns at most on 90% of maps.

"My brain is amazing! It's full of wrinkles, and... Uh... Wait... What am I trying to say?"
I might not be correct on this but it seems that you can take your psi troops on missions while they're in training to no penalty, unless they get injured and then their training will be paused until they heal. I didn't notice this right away and I would have used my better psi guy instead of thinking he had to stay in the can until fully baked.

I finished the game on veteran yesterday and I like it a great deal more than EW. One weird thing is I did have a mission where it would give me vision of the final enemy on the map, a chryssalid, unburrowing, moving a bit, and reburrowing until I just moved a guy close enough to let it try an activation dash attack.

There isn't. I highly recommend picking up the Vulture perk as soon as possible to at least maximize your chances to picking them up as loot, it's well worth the 75 supplies early in the game to have plenty of cores to play around with for experimental projects throughout the campaign.
