Kinloch and its older, bigger cousin, East St. Louis, are probably the most desperate places I have ever seen in the United States. It boggles the mind that they exist.

Definitely gives a real Hamsterdam vibe from The Wire--and it's not even that far from more populated (and even wealthy) areas of St. Louis. That is probably a 15 minute drive from Clayton which has a median household income in the six figures. St. Louis is absolutely hosed in terms of how the suburbs work. It would be a fascinating place to base a photo series if I wasn't on the other side of the state now. P.S. if you're ever in KC, barbecue is on me.
