Also: Who thinks Coby is a vice admiral or something now? Cause I think he might be.

He showed up in the anime episodes that tied into Film Z and was only a Captain, so I dunno. Helmeppo was a Lieutenant Commander. It might've changed since then so who knows.

by the next time coby and helmeppo show up, they had better be if they want to actually get in a fight with the strawhats like they've been set up for since like water 7 or something. it'd be weird to have them at the same rank as perennial loser smoker tho. smoker I expect to be an admiral by the end in spite of only existing to worf against the bad guy of the week to show how strong they are, if only because smoker seems to get promotions for the sole purpose of making him seem like a threat to the strawhats

Oda doesn't seem to mind blatantly contradicting anime filler, though. Remember when Zoro cut through steel in that early filler arc with the dragon?

Coby went from complete weakling scrub to using one of the Six Powers in a couple of months, given two years training, I think it''d be cool if he got a bit of the Arabasta era Smoker treatment, where even if he doesn't clash with the heroes much, he's just taking names and catching bad guys by the truckload offscreen.

I'm really interested to see how the entire Strawhat v. Admirals thing is going to work out. Right now it's p much set up as Luffy vs Akainu, Zoro vs Fujitora, Sanji vs Kizaru. I'm very curious as to what Green Bull does, maybe he'll fight Jinbei?

One Piece has been careful to maintain that the Marines and the World Government while very closely linked, are two separate organizations. After they find the One Piece, the Strawhats are going to be fighting the World Government, who have been their only real foes the whole time. Marines chase them from time to time and get in fights, but the villains of most arcs have been the World Government in some form. Remembering that the Warlords are part of the World Government and not the Marines. As far as the Marines go, the Fleet Commander is the only one with a real link to the World Government, via accepting orders from the World Government Comander in Chief. The Marines will likely split with large numbers sticking with Akainu while others join the Strawhats.

Dressrosa is the same way, vastly better when you're not reading it on a weekly basis. The climax of the arc absolutely sucked rear end having to read it that way.

It's interesting how a bunch of One Piece bad guys seem to borrow from different genres. Croc, for instance, was basically the series's first Bond villain.

Speaking of, you guys got any faves from the early OP arc villains? Personally, I have a soft spot for Wapol. He was just this great, entertaining on-page presence, with a delightfully wacky superpower that Oda really made the most of.

I'm not a fan of Wapol but that's mostly because Drum Island, overall, doesn't click well with me. His powers were pretty cool though seeing how he mooshed two people together and later ate himself skinny.

Kuro was pretty dope now that I look back.

He just wanted to return a wealthy man with complete piece of mind, ruthlessly murdering an entire town so he could sleep easy each night. It was a real personalised gently caress you to the oblivious town folk around him, something truly evil instead of the usual dickhead shenanigans the other ones would pull.

It feels more pirate-y than most of the actual pirates in the series.

I remember in an SBS Oda mentioned that Kuro's insane slash attack was as fast as CP9's moon walk - the major downside being that he couldn't see where he was going, hence why he cut up his own crew doing it. He was indeed a cool villain, and it was great that his weird tick of pushing his glasses up with his palm had a sinister reasoning.

Kuro's plans were pretty stupid for someone who was supposed to be such a brilliant planner, though. The most blatant example was his attack on Merry; he would have just left an unnecessary corpse where someone might find it even if he'd bothered to confirm the kill.

I'd give it a pass, because the whole point of Luffy showing up and pushing his poo poo in was to demonstrate how full of himself/poo poo Kuro really was for all his ego and talk. Also that real pirates don't just turn tail and run from being pirates.

My favorite moments in One Piece are when the villain does the big monologue/big talk and Luffy just slams them back the gently caress down from their pedestal.
