I don't really know what you have so it's hard to say what you should have done instead (If you had grenades on your other dudes and we are talking about basic stun lancers, you should have strongly considered using a second grenade to kill that group), but it sounds like you were reliant on 2 out of 3-5 shots hitting, and even at 75-90% odds that isn't a safe assumption to make. Don't forget that stun lancers have dodge also, so your actual chances of killing those dudes is lower than that, even.

EDIT: Not saying you weren't unlucky, but you should have adjusted your plan once it becomes increasingly unlikely it would work. I mean if you are down to one last trooper trying to make an unreliable shot that would hopefully kill one of two enemies, and your first instinct is to take the shot, STOP AND THINK.

"Oh, commander, how'd you get in there! What a mix-up"

* Shen smacks Tygans hand before he can hit the release button. The Faceless stops pretending to be the commander and has an exasperated look on his mush-face *

Shen (with a bemused expression): "That's our Tygan!"

So I started on commander yesterday after beating Veteran the day before.

It doesn't seem much harder to me than Veteran through the first couple of months, other than the fact that the grenades are now not a guaranteed kill on the basic advent troops. Of course, at this point I have rough ideas of what build order / guerrilla missions to undertake / squad composition I want to suit my playstyle, which I didn't before. I was losing about 1 guy every other mission early, but since I unlocked magnetic weapons it's been smoother.

I did have a hugely harrowing UFO avenger assault in the beginning of month 2, which was very rough, but I think really managed to put me ahead of the power curve overall, because I ended up getting 20 kills on that mission spread out among all of my guys and didn't lose anyone. Considering missions generally have only had 6 or 8 enemies at this point it was a big advantage for getting troops ranked up quick. It was relatively low risk too since you can generally overwatch like 8 guys and then the aliens come at you about one pod per turn. I was literally just using 1 guy to pull pods if necessary and then retreat, while everyone else just reloaded and overwatched or picked off stragglers.

I didn't actually realise you got reinforcements in that, and from what everyone said about it I was terrified of being overwhelmed by dozens of enemies, so I ended up rushing the objective and did it with about 5 enemies killed.

If you haven't yet, try turning AA down a bit. Doing that and knocking textures down to medium eliminated 99% of the stuttering for me. Didn't fix the general glitchiness of the game but not much can be done about that.

It was my last grenade. A reinforcement group was called down when I had already taken out every other group on the map, and only had the objective left. There wasn't a whole lot else I could do. And with the overwatch shots, it was more like 8-9 shots.

Edit: I'm just venting at this point.

Seriously, 18 upgraded plasma grenades is just bonkers. Huh... one stunlancer left standing with 1 hp and an 87% to hit. I don't like those odds. PLASMA GRENADE. I'm pretty sure I'm spoiling myself. I'm trying to cut back and take at least one or two other guys per mission who aren't grenadiers, just to level them up, but all the xp goes to my BOOM TROOPERS.

Game is amazing. A huge step up from the first one.

What difficulty is this? You would have to spend atleast 3-4 grenades per pack, you would run out of ammo.

In fairness, it's veteran. It got easy fast, but I feel emotionally committed to my team/ironman run now, so I'm going to finish it up before trying Commander again now that I know what I'm doing.

18 shots of~8 damage in a expanded radius goes a long way. You can usually get hit a whole pod at once, even after scatter. Two grenades does serious damage or kills most early/mid game stuff. Even 3 grenades a pod, that's six pods per mission that can be instantly vaporized.

Whelp, had my first game-ending cascade failure.

Avenger defense mission, and things went nearly perfect. Turn before I take out the device, Bradford gives me a reinforcement - my best Grenadier, who was down with light wounds and Shaken. No big deal though kinda not helpful, but I'm nearly done so I just have him hang out in the escape zone. Destroy the device, full sprint everyone to the exit and have those already there Overwatch from cover. End the turn with two outside the zone, and they're both half a move out - easy escape.

One of the reinforcement pods that I'd been bailing from moves out of the fog and hits 3 of 3 shots on my Specialist who's in high cover and kills her. Mr. Shaken Grenadier panics, turns, straight-up murders my sniper and then runs to stand in the open field one square outside the escape zone.

I make a risky (dumb) choice and decide that I can survive for one turn so I don't have to leave behind a third high-end soldier. So - everyone but him in cover, bunker down, overwatch up.

First action of the alien turn? MEC comes stomping to the edge of range and artillery-grenades the escape zone. Suddenly I've got four more wounded and without cover, and three ADVENT troopers in firing position.

Two turns and I've gone from a literally perfect mission with sure victory to five dead, two wounded and I now have no one over Squaddie on my entire roster that's healthy and alive. And Mr. Shaken is still panicked and won't get into the escape zone. Nice reinforcements, Bradford.
