This was an OK monster of the week episode with some great directing and photography, but honestly I'm mostly disappointed because this episode wasn't a sequel to Home.

Mixed episode but lots of feels. I liked the Maggie story line better than the MOW. Gillian did a good job. Although, "My mom just died but I want to go hunt down this thing ripping apart people." K, Scully.

It felt like two good episodes mashed together to make one decent episode. Like each story was good on its own, but took focus away from the other and didn't quite gel fully. Usually in episodes with deeply personal family stuff it's either mytharc, or the MOTW has a personal connection. Weird that they suddenly threw Charlie in there too. He's been referenced all of what, 4 times in the entire run of the show? I'm wondering if the quarter will come back before the end too.

Well, the ending to this week's monster plot was almost hilariously pat, but otherwise this was another solid one. I feel like any time they give Scully an emotional plot/subplot it's gonna work because Gillian Anderson just kills it every time. Brace yourselves for two Chris Carter episodes to end the season!

I wasn't following the thread live, but has anyone commented about how the scene where "Downtown" is playing probably was actually a reference to Home? It was very very similar to the scene in Home where the family pulls up outside the house and then goes inside and murders the sheriff.

Its implied that the women with the implant live extremely long lives, or possibly forever if they aren't purposely killed. That may be what the writers were going for there.

TV ratings were down again but still pretty strong: 2.5 rating / 8.3 million viewers. Also apparently the first episode debuted in the UK to good ratings.

The big difference in the way he treats Mulder and Scully has to do with how they treat him. Mulder wants lotto numbers and is greedy to use him as a tool and Scully just has fun and gets drunk with him. So he's a dick to Mulder and more playfully kind to Scully, but he's not going to tell the truth to either of them. He's still a bad-faith existentialist and a grouch.

I mentioned this earlier on the page but I'm convinced it was an homage to the scene in Home where the family shows up at the sheriffs house and the music is playing as he and his wife are murdered. It wasn't the same song but the scenes are very similar and the lighting really reminded me of that scene, plus the title of the episode had me looking for it.

Whether or not that scene was an homage, Hospital Lady being fed into her own garbage disposal was one of the show's better kills I can remember. I'm really liking how gross and gory this season has been overall.

Innocuous music playing over scenes of horrific brutality is pretty much a Morgan & Wong trademark. I was kind of disappointed they haven't collaborated on anything this season. If the X-Files couldn't bring them together again, I guess that partnership really is done for good.

I guess its maybe implied that the "ghost" of their son made it too painful to be around each other. If you're talking about their jobs at the FBI, the series ended with the X-files closed so there was no official partnership.

The supposedly mind-reading alien DNA lady said it was because Mulder became depressed in the first episode, I think Incidentally, the first episode sucked but I was especially disappointed that her and the talk show guy weren't eventually shown to be charlatans, or at least left the possibility open. That scene where she did the mind reading but then somehow could not initially figure out that Scully also was abducted made me think it was a setup for that. Then I thought thought the scene where Mulder gives an super hokey impassioned speech to Scully about how this scheister conspiracy youtuber was going to change the world in front of the alien DNA lady meant Mulder was onto them and is making a show of pretending to believe, but nope it was played totally straight

Hey I'm going to skip past some of the discussion since I'm watching this now, but just want to know if there's some references from past episodes I'm missing. It seems Scully has quite a bit of extended family, was any of it from past seasons? Like was Charlie invented for this episode, or were all the names invented for this episode. Also "Signed by two naval officers" sounds familiar, weren't there two mytharc related naval officers. I will say it's disappointing that this doesn't have anything to do with Home despite the title. Usually I'd not assume but I did go to a q/a session with Duchovny and at one point he did start going on about Home, I guess I mentally conflated the two things.

This is the first time we've had any back story. Scully's father and brother were/are in the navy so I'm sure Mrs. Scully still has a lot of contacts from there. It didn't really seem weird to me.
