Gotta earn your cool poo poo. Bandannas and tats are the medals and rank pins of the new XCOM!

Also FradulentEconomics, a lot of your ideas are extremely powerful but I suppose making these "prestige class" equivalents is going to be a lengthy and expensive affair so I'm down with it. Losing an elite trooper with that much power is going to sting, and anything that makes your boys and girls more vital to the war effort is IMO in the spirit of XCOM.

I actually really love the T3 weapons because I have a soft spot for beam style weapons that feel like they have a huge punch to them. That *VWOOOOM* charge cycle followed by the beam firing and blowing someone's loving face off is like audiovisual porn, and the heavy beam cannon looks amazing with tracer rounds in it because some of the beams will come out red.

So much better than the Nickolodeon Gak plasma from EU/EW.

I like all of the tier 3 weapons except the pistol. I want an alloy hand cannon instead of a plasma pistol.

The tier 3 sniper rifle is ridiculously satisfying, though.

Gonna have to go with the tier 3 cannons as my favorite, TBH. For the final mission I was like: "Hmm, prolly should have a sniper with AP rounds for this...but I just love to hear dat cannon roar, so Heavy Weapons Expert it is!"

Nothing like the sound of that while seeing it do AP damage and shredding all the armor off a hard target with the best scope + aim PSC bonus to guarantee it hits. :3:

The actual shot animation is pretty cool. The physical design of T3 weapons and armor on the other hand are kinda dumb in my opinion. We're supoosed to be some sort of rag-tag group scrounging poo poo together. T2 reflects that as everything looks welded together. Also, some people in this thread seem to be under the misconception that Snipers are somehow not great, which confuses me.

This is where she got nine kills in a turn in the final mission:

 Sectoids and Codex clones, and a nice final Shredder shot at Avatar 2.

This put her firmly above 100 kills in the campaign, meaning she alone was responsible for almost 20% of my total kills. I only started training her up when my Gunslinger got hosed up bad enough to be put out of comission for over half a month and never looked back.
That kill count could have been higher, after she got Shredder she started murdering way less. At some point she was at like 4 kills per mission

I've been thinking about sword Rangers.

How hard would it be to mod in a "Double Slash" ability for Rangers that works like Chain Shot, minus the accuracy penalty (so, if you hit with a sword attack and the target is still up, take a second sword attack.)? Cos I'm thinking, remove Deep Cover (seriously, who takes that), bump Implacable up a rank to be opposite Untouchable, bump Conceal up a rank to be opposite Bladestorm, put Shadowstep under Shadowstrike as a Scout ability on 3rd promotion, opposite Run-and-Gun, and have Double Slash be opposite Shadowstrike at second promotion.

It would make early game Rangers be pretty ridiculous with double-swording things, but they can only really take out one target a turn and they're risking exposing other pods to do so.

Also much like a specialist's Hack skill goes up 5 per promotion, have a Ranger's sword accuracy go up each promotion, 2 then 3, then 2, and so on, for a total of +15 at Colonel.

Look at Chain Shot in whatever .ini it's in. If it has fields for which weapon it applies and how much of a penalty it gives you can probably just change it to apply to secondary weapons and set the penalty to 0. Someone got Slash working with Shotguns this way.

Aim for Sharpshooters, Will for Psi-Ops, Health for the rest.

For weapons, I usually used scopes and extended mags. Rangers I gave laser sights instead of scopes, and Psi-Ops I gave stocks since they had low aim anyway. I also found out through this that repeaters proc their execute on any damage, not just a hit, so a stock and repeater can be pretty brutal.

Aim on basically everyone, except movement on Psi soldiers and my dedicated Concealment Ranger. No dodge (shouldn't be getting shot), no health (doesn't prevent wounds), no will (mindshields and solace exist). Those get sold to the Black Market (or stockpiled to sell later if the continent bonus that makes the Black Market pay more is on the table.)

Aim on snipers, with clips extended as much as possible, dodge on anyone else, supports get stocks for breaking overwatch, rangers get crit, and heavies get free reloads. Scopes if at all possible on as many as possible, snipers>heavies>rangers>supports in terms of importance.

I realized that I've used Hunker Down like twice so far in my game in favor of Overwatch, so obviously that needs to change, and even then, while I know what Overwatch does, I don't know if it changes how the enemy responds or even what situations it's intended for. Should I be using it to pin down enemies who are already behind cover? Should I primarily be using it when advancing and trying to discover pods? I feel like my brain has always focused on teasing out the numbers without understanding the basics of real, on-the-field usage.

I'm just getting started with this game but so far I use overwatch to catch enemies out of cover. Half that is ambushing with overwatch traps. The other half is pushing enemies out of cover with explosives and flanking, basically forcing enemies to choose between getting flanked and getting overwatch-raked as they move to new cover.

Hunker down is for vip's or an oh poo poo button for soldiers that are pinned down, taking fire, and have no good shots to take.

I was actually surprised when I found out that Psi and Will are completely different stats because I'd put Will directly on my Psi trooper and only then noticed that there was a separate stat for Psi. That actually kinda makes Will a bit of mediocre PCS. Not that I won't use one on my ace soldiers since PCS drops are rare enough anyways that you need to play with the hand dealt to you.

See, I don't actually agree with this line of thought. Your guys are armed with ragtag kevlar bullshit and random assault rifles at the start because at that point the resistance is a bunch of malcontents living out in the boonies with minimal contact with each other and no access to resources so that's the best they can do. The Commander arrives and the Avenger comes online and begins building a network while simultaneously beginning repairs and upgrades to the Avenger itself.

By the time you hit Beam Weapons and Warden Armor, you're emphatically not a rag-tag group of scrounging guerillas scraping by from day to day, you're a full fledged military force running special ops missions against the enemy. The Avenger is a fully completed and upgraded flying headquarters/factory that can support technology like goddamn Alien Teleportation Portals and Psionic training labs and you've built a massive world-wide resistance network that has the support of basically every living human being not living in an ADVENT city. It makes perfect sense that with your improved manufacturing facilities and drastically greater access to resources you're not churning out lovely duct tape armor anymore; you're the shining hope of the entire world, so every resisting human on the planet is going to make sure that your guys have access to the very best possible materials to manufacture equipment.

The only part about the T3 armor that is really disappointing to me is the lack of fully enclosed helmet options like EU/EW had. I always liked giving my troopers progressively more enclosed helmets as tech progressed(start bareheaded/hats, upgrade to carapace and give everyone buckets, upgrade to titan and give everyone rad power armor helmets), so the weird little visor options don't really do it for me.

I'd be surprised if they coded that in. Probably just that Rangers can get a good shot/slice off against pretty much anything in Dash range. The last Avatar had like 2 or 3 health left at that point, so it was a guaranteed kill as well. I briefly considered letting one of my two mind-controlled Andromedans do the honors with a bomb as a last thank you for the nice suits, but ultimately I had to give it to Kelly.
Not just for being the tutorial survivor, she also was the last one left of the initial squad I had (although the guy that went on to become my Gunslinger is still alive, just benched) and got grievously injured so often she's probably mostly holes and scar tissue by now. She deserved it.
