Illinois is going down hard right now with no signs of slowing. Poor schools with no money means teachers move to other states that actually have hopes of paying out a pension, dropping school quality. A broke state threatening bankruptcy because they can't get a yearly budget together in under 2 years means public services are all threatened, and businesses are leaving. Transit is expensive as poo poo because they need to get their income directly from the commuters. Property taxes are going up to try to meet the monetary needs of the government.

So you spend a ton of money on property tax, send your kids to an underfunded school system, pay out the nose to use highways and trains, and the state still can't promise to meet their spending needs on public services. Maybe it's not so bad for individuals looking to bring in good money but for raising a family nearly any other state is better.

Going towards a specialty in network security I'm heavily considering the Charlotte area, and their job market looks pretty solid right now.

2.13% average across the state. It varies wildly because most of the state is cornfields, but most of the people live in Chicago.

From 2014:

That is one thing to consider about Denver and Colorado in general. It is a great place for active singles, but we are like 48th in school funding and there are a number of factors -- school district tea party takeovers, laws constraining how taxes can be raised and spent -- that means things aren't getting better any time soon.

It depends on the county and municipality. Cook county, which is the City of Chicago and the first ring burbs, is around 1.7-2.0%. The 'collar' counties like Lake, DuPage, Will, etc are as high as 2.5-3.0%. I am looking at some new construction in Naperville and it's 2.67% there, and the basic bitch model starts at $320k, and most houses average in the lower $400's, which if you do the math, is over $10k/year.

We also had our state income tax double from 2.5% to 5% about 5 years ago, and then they dropped to 3.75% last year.

I don't want to string them along but I don't want them to retract their offers in case company 3 doesn't want to make me an offer (or negotiate on a potential lowball offer).

You can go one of two ways.

1) total honesty, tell them you have another option but you won't know if you're interested for another 10 days, at which time you'll accept or reject their offer(s), or
2) Accept the better of the two, tell them you need 3 weeks before you can start, if option 3 is good, call them and say you decided to decline.

It's looking more and more like Long Island is where we'll end up. The LIRR of the 3 transit outfits is pretty reliable, even in the snow. I take the subway every day now and it's fine for the most part. Commuting by train is fine as long as its 40 minutes or under. The big problem is, the LIRR is expensive as hell.

Just straight up ask "if you make me an offer how soon will you need a response?'"
You can also say to company 3 "Is there any chance we can bring my interview forwards? I'm talking to some other people and I don't want to be in the position of having to pass on you because I get an offer I can't wait on."

These things are hardly ever set in stone, and the companies already have decided how desperately they need someone to fill the role and vaguely how much they care about getting you personally. You don't explicitly tell 1 and 2 'you are my second choice' but you can explain that you have certain demands on your calendar and would appreciate if they moved a little in your direction.

Company 3 unfortunately can't move it forward, I asked them but they want to bring in a guy who's only available on fridays. Next week I'm in a training so can't make time for an interview so it'll be the week after. I tried for this week but that didn't work out for them.

Second interview with company 1 went pretty well. They want to hire me but made me a really low salary offer (20% lower than what ai currently earn and they roughly know my range). Told them I'm not accepting that offer and will get back to them in the week after my training. They already told me it's just a first offer and they really want to make it work, so I guess I'm able to get a decent offer if I want to go work for them.

I (feel like I) am not in the position to tell company 3 to hurry up though. They can probably get people with a similar set of skills but I don't have many options with companies like them but would love to work for them. Company 1 and 2 can't find a lot of people with the skills they want (and I have) so hopefully they don't mind waiting a bit longer.

If your company has more than 20 full-timers, they are mandated to offer you some kind of pre-tax commuter plan, which I would imagine covers some kind of LIRR-unlimited card type thing.

Ronkonkoma line is a wreck, I had much better luck commuting on the Babylon line.

My worst time on that line was in 2011 when a lightning strike took out all switching between the East River tunnels and Jamaica, but I was one of the smart/lucky ones who was able to grab the E to Sutphin Blvd. before everything got real bad and everyone got stuck until 1 AM. Honestly, of the three lines, the LIRR is still the best. Ive talked to friends who rely on NJT and its basically one huge delay out of NYC, and Metro North has had 3 major derails in the last 5 years.

Those trains run more frequently on the summer out east. For obvious reasons.

It's not the worst thing in the world, for all the poo poo LI gets (deservedly) it's a pretty awesome place from late april to late october. It's just expensive as hell.

That's average rate. Marginal rate would be the tax rate on your last dollar of income.

But yeah, this often gets people. Someone will see the marginal rate is 25%/28% (those two brackets probably cover most of the thread), and go off about federal income taxes without realizing their average rate is probably below 20%, and significantly below that if they own a house or have children.
