BonoMan posted:It's a real problem facing society. It's a symptom of a larger problem, which is corporatization and insularity turning decision-makers increasingly risk averse and compelling them to run poo poo into the ground, but we shift all our complaining onto "UGH, superhero movies" because it's easier to complain about that. Ironically, the problem with that is that there's only so many times you can make that argument before it starts getting as old and stale as the movies can be. It doesn't help that a tinge of resentment, over the fact that all the poo poo we got made fun of for liking in grade school is now cool and popular, occasionally peeks through during these arguments (ZACK SNYDER IS SUCH A BRO DIRECTOR), making them even more insufferable. This inspires fans to view people who just want something new and different as unrepentant killjoys, causing them to double down on their passions and fuel the status quo for a little longer. In short, this problem wouldn't be so big if nerds weren't so loving dramatic.

The cries about originality are themselves ignorant if you had any idea about the history of Hollywood. They've always either adapted existing media, followed a trend like a pack of seagulls, or both.

I don't agree with the "too many movies" complaints. DC has put out one movie so far with like 2 hours of content, and Marvel has put out ~13 which, if we call it 30 hours, is like two seasons of a show. Since 2008. There's only like 6 Xmen movies in 16 years. I understand if you fully immerse yourself in the marketing and the nerd news sites and twitter buzz nonstop it would get tiring hearing about the never-ending cycle of anticipation, but if you just go see the movies (or don't) you're ultimately taking up like 10 hours of your time per year. They're just expensive episodes of a TV show. They're still releasing stuff like Race, The Young Messiah, Desierto, Knight of Cups... I dunno, it always feels to me like someone going to Barnes and Noble and complaining that 80 new comic books come out every month because they walk straight to only that aisle. People here describe seeing Age of Ultron like that eyeball scene in Clockwork Orange, but then debate how hyped they are about Civil War. I'd call some of that self-inflicted. For whatever reason this genre and stuff like Star Wars just begets lots of forum discussion while real-life dramas don't generate as much. I do suspect over the next couple decades the line between film and television will get smaller and smaller and we'll lose the strong expectations of how frequently films of a certain nature should be released vs. television. Like if all this stuff was premiering on Netflix instead of getting the full hollywood hype treatment, would anyone really mind about a new 2-hour video every 6 months? Is the thinking that if comic movies didn't exist, hollywood would make more Sicarios instead of making more Air Force Ones?

I'd like to point out that, for the most part, I'm just joking around. I'd much much much rather comic book movies get made than most schlock that comes out. I mean those arguments are all still valid of course since people do sincerely express that opinion.

I wonder how much of the complaining are comic book fans who already know everything that's going to happen and are bored with it or people who are casually following along (or people who will never like superhero stuff no matter what). The MCU has completely sold me. I am very excited about anything they put out and I love the overarching story. I will watch any TV show or movie labeled as part of that universe. But I also never read comic books and have no idea what's going to happen. I don't really seek out any of the hype at news sites or twitter or anything other than checking here for new trailers, so each movie is something new. I couldn't tell you a thing about Civil War other than what has been shown in the trailers. That new TV spot from the superbowl was interesting for me since it's the first time they've shown who is on what side. Why are they split like that? What makes them choose one side or the other? Who knows! I have to wait until May! It's all very exciting!

kiimo posted:Netflix is developing a live-action Zelda TV show billed as a "Game of Thrones for the whole family" as if that was a thing that could ever exist. So if it's any consolation the fantasy genre is as tired and bloated as the comic book one. In fact pick a genre and we're pretty saturated already. Well, I feel like slapstick comedies are due for a comeback, as a refreshing change of pace. The few slapstick-ish movies I've seen recently have been animation (Shaun the Sheep comes to mind). That can and should change!

Heist movie set during the purge about a group of normal folks who don't want to murder anyone, just rob a rich rear end in a top hat. Fake documentary about the yearly tournament that happens during the purge where people fight with dangerous remote control robots in the street. Sports movie about animal that can play in sports because the laws that say animals can't play in sports are in void cause of the purge. Slice of life movie about a kid who has birthday during the purge and just wants to have a normal party.

Part of me is hopeful for this one just because I want more Frank Grillo in my life, but so far this series hasn't been half as trashy or novel as it needs to be to make the concept work so I dunno.

HUNDU THE BEAST GOD posted:I wonder what an interesting The Purge movie would look like. A year or so back I'd heard that the next Purge movie would be a prequel where the new US government took over. We'd see how the Purge was introduced, peoples' reactions to it, and the chaos of Purge night before "Purge-proofing" your house was a thing. I don't know what happened to that, looks like we get one scene in the beginning to set up the main character's motivations and then it's non-stop violence-porn like the first two movies.
