"Freelance Writer and Film Maker" are resume/LinkedIn euphemisms meaning "I have a blog and post vlogs on YouTube".

More interestingly is that he was a self-employed public relations consultant for several years. Given how poorly his image management online has been (I mean, given what an embarrassing poo poo-show the Sarkeesian Effect was, and also the, ya know, reputation as a enormous bigot), I can't imagine he was that good at it, but he apparently was successful for three years—if he was bad at it he wouldn't have lasted that long.

Is he denying that there are progressives who created anything, or is he limiting the scope of this somewhere? Artists are among the most progressive class of people I know. In fact I would describe roughly 90% of the people I work with as progressive (is that what "prog" is? These people really love their cryptolect). A few of us are also freaks, but the people I'd describe that way are the most progressive of all of us. Probably we don't count as creating for complicated handwavey reasons designed to direct attention away from Rev's position being an unsupported and obviously false statement, phrased to sound clever without any real meaning.

What does Rev do? Does anyone know? It would just be really funny if he was another one of those people who only produce blog posts. It would be even funnier if he were a programmer.

I get the feeling I've now put more thought into this than he did.

You did put far more thought into this than Rev puts into anything, his whole shtick is to get into a frothing-at-the-mouth rage about "progs", he never provides any definitions or examples of what he's angry about. "Freak" means nothing. "Prog" famously means nothing and everything, since Moldbug used it to argue that America is a communist country. It's more than obviously false, it's not even wrong.

There's just nothing to it.

And yes, he does nothing but make angry tweets, and before that, angry LiveJournal posts.

Gamergate was started as a way of getting back at a creative type. As far as the big figures in the gamergate controversy go, the vast majority of actual video game creators are in the anti-gamergate camp. The exceptions are what, Vanishing of Ethan Carter guy and Postal 2 guys? Milo and Christina Hoff Sommers certainly weren't game developers, or even people who gave a poo poo about the gaming community before gamergate.

The Hugo Award controversy fares slightly better under this narrative, but even then it's one group of creatives vs another group of creatives, and it's dreadfully inaccurate to say that progressive SF is by any means a new phenomenon. Unless you wanted to say progs occupied SF by going back in time and having Daughter Of Influential Early Feminist Mary Shelley and Avowed Socialist HG Wells create it in the first place.

If anything, it's more accurate to say "progs create, freaks get really angry progs are creating in freak spaces" but it's not like either category is stable or meaningful in the first place.

I think Derek Smart declared himself "neutral" on Gamergate, which probably makes him more sympathetic to it than most others in the industry. Not sure either side would want to claim him though.

At any rate I can see the counterargument already: the content creators in the games industry aren't really "progs," but like the industry, have themselves been "occupied" - brainwashed by the SJW/feminazi occupiers or simply cowed into submission to cultural marxist ideals!

The sentence isn't actually wrong - freaks create, programs occupy novel places.

But it doesn't lend itself to a reactionary agenda well. First of all, the two aren't complimentary - freaks tend to be progs. Reactionaries tend to murder freaks. Progs support progressive freaks and tolerate other freaks.
Without progs establishing the novel creations, they'd just be silly ideas. In a world of freaks and reactionaries, nothing new would come into being for as long as reactionaries are in power. In this world, with progressives in at least some power, things are invented and change the world very quickly.
