I've updated my recap post from earlier with the current information and I'm going to put it up here for newcomers and people who couldn't stay up last night. At 4:30 PM Pacific Time on February 10th, one of the militia members was caught trying to drive off the refuge on an ATV. When the FBI ran after him, he turned around and sped back. The FBI made a statement that's basically "We realized that they're trying to break free of the boundaries" and moved in to barricade them. The FBI moved in with MRAPs, Bear Cats, or similar armored vehicles and spotlights and supposedly had a sniper in the fire watch tower. They called Gavin Seim (a sovereign citizen photographer and artist with a prior criminal record), who live streamed their screamed "negotiations" with the FBI and deranged rantings about how the government is going to kill them all and America is too cowardly to stand up and help them fight. Mark the FBI negotiator listened to the live stream and regularly responded to it with his bullhorn, taunting them with promises of warm vehicles and cracking jokes about getting them coffee. The Malheur 4 have totally broken mentally. They were convinced that all the negotiation was just a trap to make them easier to execute, so they refused to surrender. They demanded that the FBI allow Reverend Franklin Graham to collect them and give them an armed escort with their weapons at 7:00 AM the next day so they could peacefully leave and avoid prosecution at all. The FBI refused to allow anyone on the refuge until they leave. All four have indictments, so they're leaving in handcuffs or a body bag anyway. The mysterious 4th militia member, Jeff Banta, spoke on the stream away from the rest of the group for the first time and seemed much less crazy than the rest (in the sense that he wasn't screaming with a rifle in his hand). Michelle Fiore got on the phone with them shortly after the siege began and made a kinda successful attempt to talk them down and keep them from stirring themselves up until they went out in a blaze of glory. A handful of supporters started driving out, but none seem to have made any headway or impact if they arrived in Burns at all. Sandy and Sean Anderson, in particular, went completely fatalistic and were convinced that dying in a last stand against the FBI is the only way to continue the fight because they'll be imprisoned forever or assassinated if they give up. Sean Anderson gave an ultimatum to the FBI: let them leave with their guns peacefully at 7:00 AM the next day or kill them now. In the end, it worked out surprisingly well. Sandy Anderson seems to have been the worst agitator of the group, constantly swinging between calm prayer and screamed demands for the FBI to try and kill them already and inspiring her husband and David Fry to go ballistic with her. Eventually Fiore and Seim were able to calm the non-Sandy militia down enough to get them to agree to a compromise: they would meet with Fiore the next morning at 8:00 AM to negotiate their unarmed surrender (though they were insistent that they were "turning ourselves in, not surrendering!"). At the moment, the fateful hour has passed and the FBI has moved or is moving Fiore in to talk to the militia and negotiate their surrender. The militia still hasn't totally given up on their insane beliefs that it's all a trap to murder them, making it take longer than it should. In other news, Cliven Bundy and his bodyguards stupidly tried to fly commercial to Portland to meet with the occupiers and got himself ambushed and arrested in the airport.
