gravity rays so what
|
# ? Feb 11, 2016 17:05 |

So, they noticed that these loving black holes merged, realized it happened forever ago but also realized that if it emmitted a gravitational wave then that wave is still coming at us. Then got this thing built in time and detected it. Huh - how many mergers do we know about? Does this mean gravity travels slower than light?

everything we've done with astronomy up until now has used electromagnetic waves or particles now we have an entirely new way to look at the universe and see things that we may never have been able to see before

KoRMaK posted:Then got this thing built in time and detected it. Huh - how many mergers do we know about? Does this mean gravity travels slower than light? mergers have been postulated but this is the first one detected. they didn't know that this particular signal was coming, they just turned the machine on and happened to hear it gravity waves travel at the speed of light every observation weve ever made of any heavenly body, without exception, has been a measurement of electromagnetic waves. until today. now weve made our very first measurement of a gravitational wave, a fundamentally different phenomenon. all matter produces and responds to gravity waves, unlike electromagnetic waves which only interact with charged matter, so we can now detect a whole new class of events when galileo first looked through a telescope it wasn't anything fundamentally new, since his eyes could already detect electromagnetic waves. this is fundamentally new. its like developing a new sense, we dont even have a name or an analogy for that sense. very very very big news

hahaha the advantage of having the news leak early is people had time to produce professional videos and release them almost immediately after the official announcement https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gw-i_VKd6Wo this is a good video to watch if you want an overview of the gravitational wave thing

gravitational waves are also cool because everything we observe in astronomy is electromagnetic radiation. radio telescopes and xray teelescopes and all that, its the same stuff, in a general way. this is like hearing space instead of seeing it, we measure the expansion and contraction of local space and time as a wave passes by earth. super cool.

EM waves are like seeing space gravitational waves are like hearing space neutrinos are like tasting space (because they have flavours) next up:
