I'm hella impressed with Tim Armstrong's performance in the last episode. Overall it was pretty blah, but his monologue made up for it.

It was a fun episode with a cool looking alien and it was about old timey baseball, A+

A hell of a lot better than all things which had zero baseball and way too much 90s new age, thanks Gillian Anderson

It's my favorite episode. There's some hamfisted stuff about it, but it's so goofy and earnest in it's own way.

How you feel about that episode probably depends on whether or not you like baseball episodes. Personally, I love it, but I can see why others would be ambivalent about it. There's some great elements;

- Jesse Martin and Frederic Lane are fantastic guest stars
- Young Art Dale reacting to Exley's real appearance
- Alien Bounty Hunter getting beaned by a baseball
- Mulder nerding out about something other than porn, UFOs, and basketball
- M. Emmet Walsh does a great job stepping in for Darren McGavin

The whole episode has this great fairy-tale feel to it, and it's nice to have an episode that deals with the overall mythology (in a way) but isn't doom and gloom and high stakes. Jesse Martin in particular is just great the entire episode, particularly his conversation with Art Dale on the bus after Dale sees his true form. I love the idea of a baseball game convincing an alien to become a human and just play baseball. It also has that wonderful Mulder and Scully scene at the end.

Plus it makes a great shirt.

Mulder and Scully are fine, but it just seems a little weird and loose and the other actors just seem kinda lovely and everything just feels kind of cheap somehow, and everything is tinted blue. There's something about it that just feels bad.

They bought back the old writers, but none of the directors. Rob Bowman, David Nutter, Kim Manners(RIP), all those guys that made the show look amazing week after week. If the series is renewed for a longer run, I hope they at least get some of them back.

Also, I guess they're probably not using film now. Shooting on 35mm hides a lot of sins, it's why the low-budget early seasons still look really good compared to a lot of modern TV.

On the contrary, they couldn't get Vince Gilligan for this season due to his shooting schedule, but considering how he's still knocking it out of the park with his own shows and had some of the best X-Files episodes I'd love to see what he could bring to the new show.

I'm enjoying this season but this whole thing with Mulder and Scullys kid is really dragging the show down. They need to resolve it or shut up about it at this point. Also in the original seasons didn't the monster of the week episodes end with them actually solving the cases? Fox and Dana are pretty poor agents considering they let 2 psionic siblings loose after murdering their dad and a bunch of other people and there is a Tulpa still at large murdering city officials.

Someone mentioned Mulder and Scully don't really resolve anything in this latest episode, and then either them or someone else mentioned that happened a lot in Season 2. I'm only in Season 4 right now on my rewatch, but Mulder and Scully not actually tying up the case with a nice pretty bow happens all the loving time even after S2.

And honestly, that's fine. The ambiguity at the end of a lot of the MOTW episodes seems a lot more realistic.

The big difference in the way he treats Mulder and Scully has to do with how they treat him. Mulder wants lotto numbers and is greedy to use him as a tool and Scully just has fun and gets drunk with him. So he's a dick to Mulder and more playfully kind to Scully, but he's not going to tell the truth to either of them. He's still a bad-faith existentialist and a grouch.

They constantly change their minds about that last part. It could have refereed to her resurrection in season six, she could be functionally immortal, he could have just been nice and not wanted to scare her/get her paranoid.

drat that was a good episode and one of the ones where Mulder being a "true believer" makes him a dick and Scully the nice one for a change.

Yeah I had totally forgotten about that episode and it really surprised me.

In fact--CSM is awesome in his way, but not a sympathetic character--that episode made me feel sad for him...but then I thought about how when they asked him to kill JFK and he didn't even really ask why besides the General's bullshit. (Who was played by the doctor from BSG iirc.)

Also, is the actor who played CSM in that ep the same actor that comes back later to play Spender (?) or whatever? Is that on purpose?

The best is the one where Mulder participates in some kind of old-world Greek Orthodox exorcism that would have happened anyway and it ends with the old man priest telling Mulder, "be careful. It knows you now." Not only did he not do anything special to help, but now an evil spirit is out to get him. I hope the final episode has a scene where Mulder gets killed by that ghost right in the middle of loving around aliens.

Although with it being an evil spirit I suppose you could argue that a bunch of the crazy BS that happens to Mulder is because of it.
