bigbillystyle posted:I'm surprised at that too, that there are unsecure manhole covers on such a busy interstate. Supposedly there is an inspection process for all the drains and manhole covers set by the state that happens every 2 years and this cover was inspected in June of 2014 so it was just about due for its bi-annual checkup. I don't know what there is to inspect though if it isn't even held down by bolts or welds. Maybe just the overall fit? My guess is that they inspect the overall fit and condition, because when the manhole ring and the concrete that secures it gets loose, it can cause the manhole lid to either get loose and therefore subject to too much motion when a vehicle travels over it, or the ring can warp and cause the lid to start sitting at an angle, again subject to motion or flipping when a vehicle goes over it. In Phoenix I've seen a manhole that 'popped' out of the ring on a really hot day. I'm not really sure of what happened, but my guess at the time was that the lid was a very tight fit, and it expanded from the heat enough that it just popped out of the ring. The sides of that particular lid were an old design with slight slopes, not vertical edges.

Hitting a manhole cover does some crazy damage to cars. I've handled a few claims with them and hitting something that solid, usually on the edge basically acts like a giant saw.

In high school my friends dad was riding his harley. When he stepped on the man hole cover beneath him it completely gave out and destroyed his left leg. Turns out a city worker had just gave it the all clear but didn't reinstall it correctly.

During one of the US F1 GPs in the 80s/90s in either Phoenix or Dallas they had to weld the manhole covers down because the cars were dislodging them as they went over them.

DC had manhole problems a while back. They were exploding up into the air. I think it was a stressed electrical grid igniting sewer gasses or something. It was pretty common for a while.

Not so much for the historic racers themselves, as none of them really have much downforce, but we've had a rotating show of various modern cars as well, Ferraris, Thundersport cars, F1 cars, and they all have enough downforce to lift manhole covers. Because Copenhagen is an old city, there are a bunch of difference manhole cover designs still in use. Some of them have built-in locking mechanisms, but the older types either have to be welded or are designed to have a sort of lead crush gasket installed, which keeps the cover in place if it's properly hammered down. In one case, we even had to suspend ~200kg of concrete weights from wires attached to underside of a particular manhole cover to keep it in place, because we were running out of time and didn't have any other options.

Yeah the generation in that video came with 3 different motors in the US (SPI which must be the lovely one, Zetec, Duratec). I've had an '06 (Duratec) since new that just got a hefty round of maintenance and I fully expect this thing to go another 50k (from 96k now) easy.

Family had a 01' Focus that did 300k with only an O2 sensor being the standout failure. The current 04' and 06' Focuses have had various issues with rust and interiors falling apart but both are pushing north of 250k. They are good little cars, especially the wagons.

I haven't owned a Focus, but my '97 Escort wagon and '02 ZX2 were/are both amazing cars. The Escort went over 200,000 miles on its first clutch and the only unexpected problem was some rear suspension stuff that was probably related to carrying between two and six canoes on the roof on a regular basis. The ZX2 is still going strong and is my daily driver. Great cars.

My Escorts were also legendary survivors and I miss them. The biggest difference with the Focus is that Ford managed to build something cheap and cheerful and dependable instead of just cheap.

With the focus there are so many hosed up and bass ackwards repairs. Like have fun fixing your door when the innards aren't functioning anymore. Or when that t stat takes a dump and your pulling the a/c compressor. And finally the rust....BUt I guess all cars in the Midwest rust. Edit: to contribute instead of just focus bashing There called parking stops RIGHT????? This is on a 01 Volvo And leaked oil really bad. Customer didn't wanna pay for a new oil pan. My boss mixed up j/b weld after cleaning the oil pan and letting it dry for 24hrs. And its still dry to this day. clam ache fucked around with this message at 18:17 on Feb 14, 2016 |

It's probably more that people don't remember how mega expensive they were when new, so they seem expensive after normal depreciation. The whole hummer aesthetic became dated very quickly, and the interiors were junk even by old GM standards so theres not much today to indicate that they were expensive luxury cars when new.
