That book was called Mysteries of the Unexplained, and it was indeed a cool, yet unnerving book to read as a kid (those faces would creep me out, too :ohdear:).

I wish I could find pictures from Time-Life's similar book series Mysteries of the Unknown because there were some more pics like the The Faces of Belmez that were pretty freaky, but all I can find are pics of the covers :(

But have the commercial that would come on randomly during after school cartoons when I was a kid, making me feel dread and uncertainty as a nine year old:

That reminds me of another commercial for a book or video series I saw a lot in the 90's. I can't remember the name of it, but it was a similar theme.

The only thing I remember is that at one point it describes the "Face of Mars."

With only that but of detail to go on, I haven't been able to re-find that commercial.

I read it so many times when I was a kid. It's full of crazy stuff from scientific futuristism, myths and paranormal stuff.

There were a whole bunch of paintings and pictures in it that were too small and low res to be able to pick out much detail. I really should see if I can get it from my dad next time I visit them, I doubt he looks at it anymore.

Those books are basically the old time version of browsing sites like wikipedia, snopes, and tv tropes. Just a big collection of loosely connected brain candy.

Wrongo! That's a mermaid. You can tell by the shape of the tail. That boat is lucky as the big ones are old enough to learn capsizing those weird 'hard seals' gets some tasty flailing treats.

Basking sharks, like most whales, are terrifyingly huge but pretty much harmless due to their diet consisting of small plankton consumed through filter feeding. Its literally impossible for them to swallow larger prey.

VVV Okay there are more toothed whales than baleen ones, but most of the really big whales have baleen. That's not to say sperm whales don't exist though.

Basking sharks are very similar to whales but are fish instead of mammals. They and whale sharks are shaped like sharks and are, in fact, fish but behave more like whales.

Oh, I get it now! I was reading the intent wrong. I thought he was saying basking sharks were whales, not comparing them to whales. Still, I never use that smillie so it was nice to crack it out I guess.

Pretty sure this was a basking shark too:

They have "gill rakers" lining their gills. That filters out the krill and plankton from the water, which later gets expelled down their gullet.
