How many Herald sub-editors have already are drafts of a front page headline "Lorde of the rings?" For when engagement rumours happen.

So this is finally getting some coverage in national news: http://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/news/health/chch-mental-health-funding-slashed-despite-overwhelming-demand/ As someone who has been the primary supporter of a family member who was among the 100% increase in suicide related incidents, I can tell you first hand that the safety net is almost utterly non-existent. It's actually quite difficult for me to go into specifics, but I felt entirely let down. I know 14 year old kids with PTSD; and apparently 1 in 5 kids here suffer in similar ways. And then you see this: quote:The government is seeking to cut funding for mental health support through DHBs, even though funding for psychological services through community agencies was recently cut from $1.6 million to $200,000. Funding for trauma counselling was halved to a little over $400,000 over the last year. I'm mad.

If only our Ficscal Conservative party hadn't driven us into the red, and spent $30 million dollars on (failing) to change the flag, people could get the help they needed. Oh well, let's go have a beer with Ol' Johnno Key, mate

I guess they decided they couldn't cut the funding for special needs teaching units in state schools any more.

I'm potentially OK with that (without knowing the complete circumstances), because it's the same sort of thing I'd expect for any apologetic first-time offender. Diversion is a chance to avoid conviction, and I'm reasonably certain name suppression isn't uncommon for it. It'd be different if he had whipped out his cock in a Wellington alley, was convicted of some impropriety involving children or was a repeat offender though, but without more information it's possible that there were mitigating factors.

BARONS CYBER SKULL posted:Depends what kind of assault it was I guess. IIRC, a "common assault" charge means something like "put a person in reasonable fear that [the musician] may have been about to cause them physical harm." It's threatening assault, rather than actually assaulting someone. So yeah, I'm not opposed to this person getting name suppression/diversion, since it's a first offence and no one actually got hurt.

Yeah Well Also depends on how old he is and if he's had any other offenses but seems unlikely a Good Use of Diversion.

Well he's thirty-plus, and apparently has won so many awards in his successful music career that he still needs to panhandle on his reputation in order to afford a plane trip the week before he's due to take it. Like, sure, it's a decent application of diversion and why shouldn't you get name suppression for being charged without conviction, but for gently caress's sake man get your life together.

Reminder Brooke Fraser was still working in a jeans store when she had What to Do With Daylight out, which was seven times platinum. Being an award wining musician in NZ is like having a youtube video hit 100,000 views.

Yes but presumably she was still waiting on the royalties to start coming in from the album which would become seven times platinum over the next 10 years, but that's beside the point that this guy stood up in court and said "yeah, I really need to not be convicted of threatening someone because I have to last-minute organise getting my rear end out of the country".

Hello folks, checking in. I attended a Bernie Sanders rally in Atlanta that was packed and awesome. I have early voted for him in the primary and my partner who is also a NZ/US dual national plans to as well. Trump is coming to Atlanta on Sunday and I am currently tossing up in my mind if I want to attend for the spectacle and historic experience or if it would just be too depressing. My partner has already nearly reached at the idea and sworn against it so Im interested in trying to do some lone observation. After a reasonably testing nearly two months we have both apparently secured employment in reasonable jobs with reasonable commutes. This was after a great deal of applications, being offered terribly unsuitable jobs or once my partner nearly got taken into what we figured out was a pretty dodgy mid level marketing scheme. Adjusting to the scale of traffic and life hasn't been as big of a culture shock as we expected but still catches us off guard regularly. Bureaucracy is beyond belief in parts here, and some service people simply turn into a clamshell and don't know WTF to do if the "computer says no". Because we are effectively new in the country for many things - such as only recently getting drivers licence's and having no credit rating - we have run into some really strange service situations. Ive met a Kiwi businessman here in the tech industry who has run into some insanely bad service in situations because he does not have a social security number yet and treated like he must be pulling some kind of fraud for just trying to make credit card payments for a deposit on an apartment. Makes me really empathetic for the struggles undocumented immigrants go through. This country and its education system - it is true - simply doesn't compute the idea of foreigners or international people being legitimate but different for some reason. Before I whinge too much- my partner and I have been blown away by how friendly most people are here and also the cheap cost of food. "special" foods like various vegetarian, vegan, international food items and so on are actually reasonably priced. Buying limes for making margaritas isn't so painful. Mainly the thing that perks up all the time compared to NZ is the food prices tbqh But yeah theres a Feb update. I think I will go to the Trump rally. E: oh yeah, this is a pic of some other guy just before Sanders came on Jacobin fucked around with this message at 02:03 on Feb 18, 2016 |
