Bah, going to forsake Legendary for now. It has the same problem for me as Marathon did in the original - with even grazing hits putting my soldiers out of action for a month, and recruitment costs doubled, I get utterly hosed by the occasional hits rather than total party losses. That...doesn't feel right to me. Still, double enemy spawns is a neat enough difficulty tweak for me.

The way the times get dilated also means that you can occasionally put some supplies down on a recruit at HQ to keep your fighting force strong. e: don't forget the GTS' training ability as well.

If you can, I try to save one or two rookies for Psi operatives and then use the rest of the roster for actual shootin dudes. Not always an option on Legendary, but if you have the resources I would try to do that.

Yeah, it's just those first couple of months I find very annoying. I'll come back to it eventually, just not now. If I could figure out to cheat in a Rookie surplus or something I'd continue playing on Legendary. 40 supplies a pop is just too much for me to budget around.

Hank Morgan posted:What does the average cover bonus mean on the mission results screen? Defense is a value that goes directly against the attacker's aim. Defense can come from cover, abilities like aid protocol, or is inherent (later enemies get this). The difference between the attacker's aim stat (including bonuses) and the target's defense stat (including bonuses) is the chance to hit. Half cover grants 20 to defense, and full cover grants 40. Being in the open (or if the attacker flanks you) offers no bonus. Average cover bonus is, I assume, the mean average cover defense bonus your soldiers got throughout the mission.

Oddly enough the same thing happens if you have applied poison (or acid? possibly both, and all types of debilitations) via a grenade. Evacing the soldier who tossed it will remove the debuff from the enemies it hit.

So the key to legendary is to roll a scannable engineer right after getting an engineer from your first mission, as well as getting scannable avenger power AND contacts somewhere before the second retaliation. Also got to rush Predator armor from the blackmarket allowing me to buy it before I fought the first Muton. Sure, the Avatar project bar is almost at full, but the missions feel very doable (Id say even easy) and the major plot factory is next door costing only 1 contact to unlock. Oh yeah and tweak the base weapons to have higher damage range and use mods. Im guessing vanillia legendary isn't really intended to be beatable.

Beat the game. Ending is very DLC/expansion baity but that's to be expected. Not sure if I want to play another campaign on a higher difficulty (I was only on normal) or wait a bit for the next big Long War-esque mods to come out first.

I don't think I like the pod mechanics as far as overall game flow goes. They were cool in XCOM1 at the time, but they feel really gameable and occasionally infuriating due to interactions (bugs, LoS issues, mind control/dom, concealment, a bunch of other random poo poo). Every mission is about properly baiting out one group at a time, rather than any sort of running battle. This goes doubly for missions that aren't timed, which is clearly why they added that mechanic, but I'm not sure it was the best solution. It also feels like, because they sort of expect 1-2 pods at a time at most, the enemy lethality is cranked way up, so you want to alpha strike everything down before it has a chance to even touch you. If enemies weren't quite so crazily deadly, you could have larger fights without risking death or incapacitation as a near certainty. And yes, I realize you can fight multiple groups pretty trivially in the late game, but for the bulk of the game, the one-pod crawl is the best way to do things.

That final mission is WAY too easy once you know what you're doing. Just did it on my hard mode ironman, took a total of 1 point of damage across the entire mission. Enemy avatars are incredibly stupid and are really easy to kill. Oh well!

Not that there's a problem with tweaking things to your liking (I plan to do that before my next run), but vanilla legendary is definitely beatable. Lots of people have done it, notably Beagle doing it on ironman with zero lost soldiers.

Made a collection on the Workshop of all the mods I currently have running. Ones I like enough to point out: Scientist Staff Slots - Adds Scientist slots to Proving Grounds, Comms, and Workshops for various bonuses. Haven't used this yet, but wanting scientists to be more fleshed out is seemingly a common complaint, so this is a mod that attempts to help out. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems useful and pretty balanced on paper. Numeric Health Display - Thanks Peewi! This is way better than the other one that just had a tiny number next to the pips. I only wish there was a way to see how much armor will be shredded before committing to an attack, but that's pretty minor. Display Miss Chance - Good for seeing just how much Overwatch sucks in comparison to XCOM 1, and good for knowing how much trouble you're in in a firefight. Seeing 40% hit chances turn into 0% hit chances with a level 3 Aid Protocol is nice too. Remove Aim Assists - Because I'm not a dumb baby that thinks 80% = 100% that gets mad when it isn't. Show All Perks - Because I am indeed a dumb baby that can't remember which perks are where. Less Gravely Wounded - Because being grazed for 1/14th of your HP shouldn't make you gravely wounded ever. What the gently caress? Also combined with It's Just A Scratch for the old XCOM 1 wound system. Yes this is a direct buff to your troops, but I think the new system is worse anyway. Non-tile Snapping Grenades - I don't have a problem with "pixel hunting", and this is a nice fix for the really buggy tile snapping system currently in place. I got this after my recent Save Scummy Veteran first run through of the game, and not being able to target the best tile for ??? reasons when it would easily snap to all surrounding tiles was annoying, and this is a great QoL change. Experimental Item Unlock - "I'm Shen, daughter of Shen, lead roboticist among the entire resistance. I made these bullets that start people on fire, but hosed if I took down literally any notes on how to do it again!!!! " I'm also going to try out that AI tweak combined with the couple Concealment tweaks at the bottom of the list on a new Veteran Bronzeman game. I figure making the AI a bit smarter as well as being able to get Conceal back when there's nothing left alive will make for more dynamic play, and may make Phantom/Conceal feel a bit less mandatory. Being able to scout to some degree on anyone sounds nice, and facing smarter enemies if I gently caress up could be a fair enough downside.

Luceid posted:vanilla legendary is entirely beatable and plenty of people have done it though???? I should have phrased that differently. I mean to say the average vanilla legend run is not intended to be beatable, since RNG at specific key moments seems to make a world of difference between being in control and being at the mercy of even further RNG, reducing the chances of survival and victory to so much that restating becomes the time efficient choice. There doesn't seem to be anything particularly more "difficult" in the mode either. The AI isn't any better (Archon still spams blazing pinion to their own detriment a lot of the time, etc.) I guess there is more enemies and higher tier enemies spawn earlier, as well as limiting your in-combat movement by patrolling so close together. But I really dont feel it makes any major impact. If you get good RNG and get upgrades early as in my example, the game has no answer, it feels like veteran with a few more enemies here and there.

I wonder if maybe theres an accuracy cap on certain classes/weapons for close range. I've had specialists and grenadiers right next to an enemy at point blank range, and still have like a 60-70% chance to hit.
