I kind of like Silent Hill 4. I mean, it's not a game I recommend anyone to actually play, but it's got some spooky stuff in it.

Silent Hill 4 gets a lot of hate, sometimes deservedly so, but it has some genuinely disturbing visuals and (unlike most of the following games) is actually scary.

I still hate the twin victim.

I didn't really care for Shattered Memories much, but different strokes. I might have a pretty weeb-y affection for the aesthetic of the Team Silent games that stopped me from liking any of the Western ones, which is weird because I don't really feel that way about any other games.

I might also just have bad taste because I thought Homecoming was better than Downpour in some ways.

I would recommend someone play 4 over SM, personally. Not sure about Origins. It plays a bit better, but it's really unremarkable and it does weird things to Lisa's and Kaufman's characters.

Shattered Memories mostly made me mad, though. I thought it was dumb.

And this is baffling me to because pretty much everything about SM is better than 4. SM's gameplay is flawed but its sure as hell better than 4's clunky combat and extended escort mission. SM's writing is leagues better too because 4's got cardboard for characters and anything interesting gets wasted. SM plays off the themes of the original game in interesting ways and has actual emotional impact. SM has ambition and does some cool things, while 4 just crashes and burns.

Like SM is actually interesting even if you don't necessarily like it because its a precursor to the modern style of adventure games like Walking Dead and Gone Home. 4 is just really boring and forgettable.

People should just meet half way and play Downpour, cause that was a legit fun game (as long as you skip the combat and the heavy handed....symbolism, i.e. literally freeing a bluebird from a bird cage that represents happiness and hope).

I still need to play through Downpour because when I got it l I foolishly played it on Normal thinking the combat couldn't be any worse than 4's and Homecoming's which I both went through without too much trouble on Normal.

Boy, was I wrong. Downpour's combat and enemy design is godawful.

Boy, was I wrong. Downpour's combat and enemy design is godawful.
I enjoyed it way more than 4's weird golf swing meter, but yeah, the enemy design was mostly melee based humanoid with the ability to stun you or albino bat men with really bad pathing.

Yeah, it really is. The writing is better than you would think and the monster designs are great. Like for example the three main ghosts you run into; the sadistic prison guard that became sentient nerve gas, the executed inmate that became pure lightning, and the asylum director that always appears as an old school grainy film projection.

I love Silent Hill 4, and I can say that having just replayed it. Not going to argue that it's the best or anything, but I put it right up there with 3. It did a lot of great things, it also did poor things like having you repeat areas, but in a way that added to the experience, like the very methodical combat.

Also there's this: http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3373665/3373665/ which had me looking for any dick chopping metaphors the whole time I was playing the game. That kept it interesting.

I think it was a screenshot LP that I read back in the day which is where the confusion came in. I'll have to put this in my "To watch" list as whilst it's fun seeing HC bumble around a semi-familiar game I'd also like to see someone who knows what's what to have a crack at it.

Also nthing the love for the original trailer. There were two, I believe. The extended one had some initially bizarre and weird imagery like the mushrooms and wheelchairs which in context were kind of hysterical in their execution. So glad I didn't actually buy it on release. I just hate having to run and dodge between enemies as I try and check all the doors and areas so the ghosts and respawning freaks from 3 really killed my desire to play them.

The one thing that really stood out about The Suffering was they had a "Morality" system in place and every now and they you'd meet a guard hiding or smoking a joint or something and the little voice in your head would be all, "Kill the coward" but then you'd have to hack away at him for like, 30 seconds to kill the dude. Why did he have so much health if he was just there to be a prop for the morality system?

Are my memories hazy or did the Suffering 2 just re-hash the enemies from 1? I remember being pretty disappointed with the lackluster enemies in 2 but still played it 3 times to see the beasts various iterations... Or was that from 1 as well? Jesus... I don't recall much thinking about it now... Besides the final boss had a dong which was you.

Things could be going better

I was always surprised that SH Homecoming is regarded so badly. Yeah its basically the Dead Space 2 of the SH franchise but I thought the story was pretty solid and personal compared to some of the dreck that was in the other ones

It was miles ahead of Downpour IMHO. The fact the enemies weren't just "Zombie/Cenobite man with barbed wire" and "BIG zombie man" makes it stand out. Aesthetically too it felt more like a Silent Hill game. That mad labyrinth you had to traverse held gingerly over the void? I loved that. The closest Downpour got was that weird prison room with free floating stairs. Though I barely remember the story of either and I know Homecoming had arbitrary cameos and kinda turned to SAW near the end, but still...

Just feels with even a slight tune-up Downpour could have been something much, much better.

I want to get excited about this, but it's worth remembering that Kojima was tweeting about how much he liked Reedus long before P.T. was a thing. Kojima potentially getting Reedus on board with a game isn't surprising, but it could be literally anything--we have no idea what they're working on yet.

That image looks a lot like an x-ray of a stylized medieval knight's helm. Not necessarily a medieval game (Final Fantasy had the same aesthetic with a sci-fi setting), but it does seem a bit apart from a normal Silent Hill boss monster design.

It's just KojiPro's new logo (also based off the MSF design, apparently). It doesn't have anything to do with a game.

I think pretty much everything about 4 is better than SM. 4's gameplay is flawed, but it's sure as hell better than SM's walking around, easy puzzles, and only being endangered when in the froze-zone. 4's writing is leagues better too because SM's got uninteresting and bizarre reinterpretations of characters as well as a stupid twist and an air of pretentiousness. 4 changes the series up in interesting way and has actual spooky impact. 4 has ambition and does some cool things, while SM just crashes and burns.

Like SM is actually interesting even if you don't necessarily like it because its has cool monster design and an amazing atmosphere. SM is just really dumb and forgettable.

In other words, I just liked one game more than the other.

I am strangely fond of SH4 for reasons I can't explain. There are so many weird, awkward moments with stilted dialogue and a nonplussed Henry that give it this sense of weirdness I actually kind of like. And like...burping lady nurse enemies? Why? A giant twitching lady head that the lady doesn't seem to notice? Okay. It's almost like someone took a Swery game and a SH game and smushed them both together.

Yeah the same enemies returned only instead of having to do with executions they were based on types of problems in the ghetto. The game also restricted the amount of weapons you could carry for no reason at all.

I played through Layers of Fear today in a couple of short sittings. Definitely one of the spookier games I've played in a while. The environment changing when you turn your back is a cool feature that is done seamlessly and used well, though used a ton.

I liked it a lot. I didn't play it when it was in early access, so I'm not sure how much has changed. Aside from a few audio bugs near the end, it was a smooth and atmospheric ride with a grim story.

Am I crazy or does the alien's AI actually get worse as Alien: Isolation goes on? I'm about 8 hours in and at the lab and more and more often I see the alien drop down basically on top of me out of a vent only to hang around for a few seconds and jump back in. In the server farm I had it walk straight past me, actually brushing up against me, while I was hacking a door. When the AI isn't being weird the game's pretty fantastic though. I love the aesthetics, the cat and mouse game with the alien hasn't got old yet, and it really feels like a good next step in the Amnesia-style games.

Clock Tower 1, for being a sprite sidescroller, is actually quite creepy and good. I played it a few years ago with headphones and in the dark and it actually managed to scare me a couple times. Are there any other genuinely scary 2D games? I've played a few indie puzzle games with a creepy atmosphere but nothing that gave me that OH poo poo gently caress feeling.
