Let's talk about SC again. Some things are not like the others. Setting a pricing formula for shopping sounds revolutionary. So do scalable asteroids. And hey they did work on the PU! But only after that they looked at the high-level plans for the PU and FPS. Sooo StarMarine confirmed?

All is well. Another closed pre-alpha test of a invite-only pre-alpha of an alpha game. Everything is fine. AKA: well we got some serious bugs we can't deal with so we give you fuckers a bit of our poo poo so you can fly around and do nothing of value but gently caress you guys we're going to fix this poo poo eventually and bring more shitheads into the invite-only pre-alpha later on like we did with 2.0 when we weren't able to get 2.0 working properly and gently caress 2.2 is going to be the same poo poo despite it should've been released more than half a month ago we most likely will release it to the public mid-February but you will all suck it up and love it. Since Frontier publishes their numbers, we know they're selling pretty well. Reviews from actual game critics have generally been positive. NMS and Valkyrie don't really offer the same type of gameplay. The DLC is reasonably priced and explained well in advance. Their fans don't seem to show up in every space sim thread everywhere, and there seems to be a fair amount of people playing it. Am I therefore right in assuming that there is no “lifetime pass” for E:D either? darkarchon posted:Let's talk about SC again. It's pretty impressive to be smug about the asking price of an actual video game in the wake of the announcement that the make believe game you're supporting just split their purchasing options and the one game they promised is now somewhere between 3-5. But don't worry. They're having high level talks regarding what size asteroids should be.

I started on a long effort post a couple of weeks ago about the breakup but didn't finish it, but since its here, I'm just going to post some of it anyway and see a few months from now whether it proves true. It's a mix of summarization of shared thread wisdom (for newer folks and lurkers) and personal speculation (just because that's fun.) --- SUMMARIES AND SPECULATIONS The upcoming breakup of Squadron 42 and Star Citizen is unlikely to result in accretive revenue benefits for CIG. Most new backers will opt for Star Citizen as SQ42 is still largely unknown and is, it must be said, a genre oddball in this day and age. Single player space dogfight games with celebrity casts, even if the flight mechanics are tight and cinematic sense brilliant, just seem like a relic formula not well-suited to our times. (And there's little reason to assume either will be noteworthy.) Trapped with a cast of quinquagenarian (and older) sci-fi stars straining to breathe life into a ponderously written Hotshot Young Pilot with Daddy Issues trope-a-thon script, Squadron 42 is probably going to look like a middle-aged combover dude trying his damndest to look cool, sexy and relevant at a high school dance. Adding in rudimentary FPS may help break up the monotony a bit but there's ample reason to suspect that the FPS component (reportedly at least a third of the gameplay) is going to look like a shuffling corpse compared to this year's upcoming shooters- including Battlefield 5 {yeah!}, the Doom reboot and even Andromeda's. VR-based cockpit shooters and space sims (Elite, No Man's Sky, Eve:Valkyrie) will each provide truly immersive experiences while setting high-bars that Squadron 42 will struggle to best, yet each will lack for much depth in storyline. Unfortunately for Chris, Mass Effect: Andromeda, while presumed not to have cockpit fighting, will destroy Squadron 42 in its lore, its voice acting, its FPS combat, hand-crafted environments, and in 2D immersion via player agency in via dynamic, creatively satisfying storylines. SO... Who is going to want to actually buy Squadron 42? It would be really surprising if CIG hasnt already sewn-up every nerd alive who grew up loving (and still loves) Wing Commander games by now. They need young buyers now, those who have no memory of the game-- yet the cast itself features a lot of older people (Oldman, Hamill, Anderson, John Rhys, etc.) It's just hard for me to see what hooks they have for the under 35 gamers who haven't already bought it. Speculating further, I will guess the lackluster sales conversion for SQ42 post-split is quickly made into an internal crisis that demands immediate attention. This doesn't mean a financial crisis. If they flog ship sales for SC non-stop and keep shortchanging older backers in order to attract newer spacepixel porn nerds they can probably manage a small monthly burn on overhead, even if it means disenfranchising the megawhales in the process. (They allegedly have more cash on hand than the oft-rumored pittance.) The crisis CIG will be concerned about, really concerned about, is a Chris Roberts Prestige crisis. The split will be CIG's first clear measure of market interest in SQ42. If there is little to none, and Star Citizen continues to get the lionshare of new revenue, Chris will start to panic. He will then crank even more ultra-fidelity uncanny valley 'in engine' videos out from his celebrity-packed Dreambaby / Triumphant Return / Wing Commander: Infinite experiment and the gaming media will dutifully parrot these teaser releases as gospel, giving SQ a baseline bump. But even Quad Titans in SLI can not overcome turgid line deliveries of space pulp pretending it's space opera. The Oldman problem... Gary Oldman's line deliveries in the Bishop speech were bad enough that even hard core backers were wincing. Though only a brief excerpt, it is easier to believe than not that his interpretation of the character -- overwrought, gravelly, leaden -- has saddled Chris with an especially difficult problem, one that can not be solved with a million motion capture sessions. Oldman's line readings are somnambulant, his accent jarring, his hesitance with the bizarre pseudo-lore obvious. Barring new looping sessions, which would amount to reshoots of many or all of his lines and would be incredibly awkward to seek from an actor his his calibre, Roberts paid a high price for a turd performance. New mo-cap sessions are just polishing it... The 'Old Man' solution... I expect Mark Hamill (with cross generational appeal and the best bonafides in sci-fi AND ties to WC) becomes the centerpiece of most future pixelporn with Gillian Andersen a close second. Mark Hamill is the single greatest tool in Squadron 42's arsenal. His voice work is legendary, and he understands - more than any other cast member involved in this project - the critical importance of nailing line delivery. Expect most of the upcoming Squadron 42 hype-reels to feature much more "Old Man" and much less Oldman, and expect, in discreet clips, for Hamill to really knock things out of the park. (And of course we will also see AMAZING combat scenes, ship interiors, SCARY Vanduul scenes, and other stuff that puts the PTU to embarrassing shame... Chris at least knows how to deliver great pixel porn, and we should expect a metric crap ton of Squadron 42 barreling our way soon.. Because HE WILL NOT LET HIS DREAMBABY FAIL!) But will it work? (This is long enough but I will paste in part two of this self-indulgent speculation piece soon.)
